Sunny's Scroll
Sunny sighed and stared at the distant rainforest from atop Jade Mountain.
Her old, creaky bones ached, and she figured it wouldn't be long before she joined her friends in the beyond.
It wasn't easy being the last Dragonet of Destiny left. Even Meerkat had left her two years ago. Her heart ached at the memories, and the wrinkles by her eyes got moist. The tears fell down once again.
Sunny, Queen of the SandWings, took out Glory's scroll from her satchel, a present given to her by her dear Meerkat years ago.
Ever since the day she had received the scroll, Sunny always kept it with her. No matter where she went.
But when Glory had truly passed away, the SandWing queen refused to read it. It would have broken her inside.
But now it was time, by tomorrow morning, the last Dragonet of Destiny would no longer be, and Arena would be the new SandWing queen.
Ever so gently, Sunny opened the now 143 year old scroll. Its pages threatening to fade away into dust. Sunny was 161, passing the expectations of many. A dragon's average life span was 150, an age Glory had lived through exactly.
Dear Sunny,
Ever since I could remember, you were always our little sun. You shined with a positiveness that was simply unbelievable. As you know, you were always our little sister. How you were always so happy, we could never understand. We all love you. I can't imagine a dragonethood where you're not there. Thank you Sunny, for always being with us no matter what. I have to admit we all underestimated you since the beginning, but you proved yourself to be as mentally strong as Tsunami is physically. I can't think of a day when you'll receive this letter, so I hope that you take my death well. Not to the point where a party will take place of course, but where you will remember me as your sarcastic sister. With this scroll comes a necklace I made myself. In it is carved a symbol on a small wooden slate that represents each of us. It should be like a charm bracelet, but in a necklace. For Tsunami I carved a wave. And of course for Clay, a piece of chicken. I don't think there is a better picture that could represent our Bigwings better. Starflight will have a scroll, (obviously) and for you I made a shining sun. I didn't really care what I put for myself, so I carved a purple morning glory. The paint was especially made to last long, so I hope you get to have a pretty necklace for awhile.
Thanks again Sunny, for being you. I'll see you again, hopefully one day.
Your sister,
Glory
As soon as the queen finished reading the scroll, a strong gust of wind blew in Sunny's direction, and her friend's scroll crumbled into small pieces. The wind took its remains and left with them. Never to be seen again.
The necklace Glory had given her was still next to Sunny's heart. As it had been ever since she had accidentally discovered it. One year after leaving the rainforest from another visit, the scroll had fallen from Sunny's satchel, and when the former princess had gone to retrieve it, she found the necklace peeping out of the side. Sunny hadn't questioned it, and she had worn it every day.
The hybrid could feel her last breaths coming. She wiped the tears from her eyes and laid her head on her talons.
The view from Jade Mountain was incredible, and there was no other place Sunny would have liked to spend her last moments in.
With one last look across the land she loved the most, Sunny closed her eyes, took a last breath, and joined the many others who she had loved throughout her entire life.
