Jambu's Scroll

The RainWing prince happily bounced into his hut, his energy recharged after sun time.

His niece and nephew had hatched two days ago, and the whole rainforest was in celebration. The RainWings were happy for their queen, and even the NightWings had come to the big party.

As he jumped on his hammock, Jambu realized he was bored. Bored. It was such a strange feeling to him. The last time he had felt anything but happiness had been seven years ago when he had to go get ice for Glory's talon.

The prince looked over his mainly empty hut, realizing that he only had one other thing besides his hammock.

Jambu didn't really hang around in his home, he didn't see the point.

A small dresser of one cabinet sat in a corner, its dark oak wood fading into the background. Dust of seven years piled on top of it.

With curiosity, the RainWing jumped down from his hammock and walked over to it.

He inhaled, and with an exhaling whoosh the dust was gone, now floating in the air. He coughed as particles of the nasty thing floated up into his nostrils.

Should've cleaned here more often.

Once the coughing fit was over, he reached out with his talon and pulled on the wooden handle of the single cabinet.

Tucked in a corner, a musty scroll awaited to be read. Confusion was now evident on his face.

Why is this here? I don't even know how to read.

No matter how many times Glory had tried to teach him, reading lessons simply went in one ear and out the other.

Jambu gently took it out. After several tries, he managed to find out how to open it.

He expected to see dark prints of black that Glory called 'letters', but instead there were pictures.

Beautifully painted pictures. The shading and details in each of them was outstanding. Each one had a different scene he and Glory had shared together.

It was somewhat like a timeline.

The first picture had Glory and him talking while her friends, except Starflight, lied on the ground with sleeping darts on their necks.

The second drawing showed Glory hanging upside down from a tree branch with Jambu smiling up at her from below, his scales ever so pink.

The prince smiled as the memories came back to him.

The third work of art showed his and Glory's venom become solid, signifying that they were siblings.

Jambu skipped to the last picture, which he thought was the prettiest.

He and Glory were hugging, a smile on each of their faces. Jambu tried to remember when that had happened, and then recalled that it had been when she had come back from the NightWing island.

The prince had been so happy that she was alright, he hadn't remembered that she didn't like being touched. Nevertheless, she had returned the hug. And now that he remembered, he had been surprised.

Jambu looked over the scroll once more, and put it back where he had found it. He grinned as his boredom faded away.

He left the hut and went to find Glory. Not caring that he would be met by her new family.
