Chapter-25 Criminal Stars

The trial room was full, to say the least.

RainWings and NightWings were scattered around the place and were waiting patiently for Glory to arrive.

The queen held her head high as she landed and turned her scales a royal indigo, so her ruff and the outlines of some scales were colored gold to add more effect.

Three wooden seats waited for their respective temporary owners.

Glory took her place in the bigger seat in the middle and told (more like made) Deathbringer to wait by the side of the room.

Silence fell on everyone as Startoucher walked in flanked by a NightWing and a RainWing. Her wings were bound and her snout was clamped shut by a sturdy vine rope.

Startoucher's rib cage popped out from not having enough nourishment despite the fact that NightWings were now able to hunt freely in the rainforest.

This sparked up Glory's interest, but she made sure to keep her straight face on.

Startoucher sat on the seat to the left of the queen, but the guards made sure to tie her up.

The queen took pity for her, no dragon should be treated so cruelly; anyway, Startoucher made sure to keep an enraged look on her face. As if she hated everything in the world.

The seat to the right of Glory was still empty, and it was reserved for a witness.

As all dragons settled down and Deathbringer stopped fidgeting, Glory went ahead and continued.

She made sure keep her head high and too speak with as much power as she could put in her voice. She was the queen after all.

"As we all now, Startoucher of the NightWings has been accused guilty of dragonet-napping and disturbing peace. Any dragon who charged her please take a step forward and declare your reasons."

The queen internally sighed.

She hadn't expected hat speaking in front of so many dragons would be that hard. Glory now questioned why she wanted to be queen in the first place.

She hadn't realized that Vigilant had walked forward from the back. It was only when Deathbringer stood in front of her that she finally remembered.

Glory cleared her thoughts and came back to the present.

"State your reasons."

Deathbringer looked at the floor nervously before speaking.

"My egg was stolen by Startoucher the day it was laid. She ran off but I caught her in time and stopped her."

The queen nodded and turned her attention to Vigilant. She refused to let her scales turn red at the mention of the word egg.

Vigilant raised his head as high as he could without disrespecting the queen and began, "My mother laid an egg two months ago. Startoucher claimed to have experience in helping others in laying eggs. My mother had difficulties so she agreed. Startoucher took off with my little sister and smashed her egg on a rock. She escaped and I hadn't seen until now."

Glory now thought hard on the situation present.

One of her options was to ask Startoucher directly if she considered herself guilty. Of course she would say no. Once that happened the next step would be for one of the accusers to call in a witness from the crowd.

Glory let out an almost inaudible gust of air and faced the accused NightWing.

"Startoucher of the NightWings, do you claim yourself as guilty or innocent?"

Glory's scales changed to dark purple which should have made a somewhat startling effect.

But it didn't work on Startoucher. The queen thought she saw a small smirk form on the NightWing's face before she confessed.

"I claim myself as guilty. And I would rather not speak of the reasons why."

Gasps were heard around the room as the words escaped her mouth.

No one had expected this.

Glory saw Deathbringer frown and she repeated the question in case the criminal hadn't heard right.

The answer was the same.

By now hushed whispers were very present and the queen could see they made Vigilant uncomfortable.

"Silence," she declared. At once the noise stopped and Glory took the chance to address the crowd and Startoucher.

"Since the accused has considered herself guilty, there is no reason for this trial to continue. Guards, take this criminal away and lock her up in the temporary cells. I will decide her punishment today and I shall tell you the result tomorrow."

Several NightWings led Startoucher away with disgust evident in their faces.

The room quickly filed out and Glory was sure rumors about what happened would spread like wildfire in the rainforest.

I'm a few moments it was just her, Deathbringer, and Vigilant. The queen stepped down from her chair and walked towards the NightWings.

"That was odd. Dragons usually say they're not guilty and it takes a while for the trial to end. This only took like five minutes!"

Her friends also frowned.

Vigilant was the first to speak.

"Something's up. I'm not sure what, but there is. You may want to keep an eye on her just in case."

Glory nodded and started to walk out of the hut. The sun that had been previously high in the sky was now slowly setting.

She yawned as its rays called to her to recharge her energy.

"Deathbringer, I'm going to go for some sun time. You coming?"

He picked his head up and nodded.

"Vigilant said he wanted to train as a backup guard, is it alright if he comes too? I will be able to go over the basics with him while we watch over you."

The idea of having more guards slightly bothered Glory. But she agreed. Vigilant was more than likely just trying to help.

The three dragons took off to the sky and flew to the RainWing village where the platforms were located. Due to the fact that the the best hour for sun time was over, all the platforms were clear with the exception of a few RainWings who were barely waking up.

Glory flew to the highest platform meant for royalty. She laid down with her wings spread wide to her sides to catch as much sunlight as possible. She sighed in relief as the rays shined on her and she instantly felt relaxed.

She opened an eye to watch Deathbringer sit next to Vigilant and talk about fighting techniques off to the edge of the platform.

Sleep came sooner than expected and her dreams turned into nightmares.

A purple flower stood in the center of a patch of grass surrounded by bushes with thorns. It kept flashing brighter and brighter until it shined the whole room and it was gone.

In its place was Deathbringer. But what scared Glory was that he was dead.

He was lying down with blood oozing out many different cuts. Bruises were marked along his face and torso. His wings were ripped and his dark grey eyes were staring at her lifeless.

Glory sobbed in her dreams until she was woken up by someone shaking her shoulder vigorously.

"Glory? Glory! Wake up!"

Her eyes snapped open and she jumped to position herself in a fighting crouch, ready to fight anything that dared to attacked her.

The queen realized that it had been Deathbringer waking her up.

She sighed in relief and ran to be in his wings.

He stumbled back from the force but wrapped his wings around her in a gentle hug.

"Deathbringer, can you promise me something?" She whispered this so only he could hear.

"I'll promise anything."

"Then promise me you won't die without me. At least not now."

He chuckled at her tone.

"I promise you my queen."
