Chapter-24 Colorful Swirls

"Glory!" A familiar yet strange voice called.

The queen jumped out of the hammock she had been sleeping on. Deathbringer following short after.

Her eyes were wide and she looked around for danger. Deathbringer was covering her with his body and also scanning the area.

The couple relaxed as they saw who it was. The queen's older brother.

Glory turned pink with outlines of red as she realized that Jambu was holding in his laughter. His usual pink scales brighter than usual.

"Oh my sloths! Your face though!" He reached his breaking point and started cracking up.

Deathbringer growled as he stalked towards him. Jambu made the mistake of not noticing the NightWing, and turned green with fear as he felt the talons on his throat as he was pinned against the wall.

"S-sorry!" He choked out.

"You don't disrespect the queen. You hear me?" Deathbringer growled.

Glory sighed.

Dragons, she thought.

"Just let him go Deathbringer. He's family after all."

"Yeah, I'm your future brother-in-law."

Glory frowned.

"You know what Deathy? Continue."

Jambu's face fell and his scales became a brighter green.

Deathbringer smirked but let go of Jambu.

It took a moment for the RainWing to compose himself. The bodyguard walked back to the queen and stood faithfully by her side. Their tails twined together sneakily. They both grinned widely as if nothing had happened between them.

Glory put on her queenly face as she spoke to her brother, "So, what brings you here? I thought you were searching with the others."

Jambu nodded and put his pink scales back on. "I did. And we found Startoucher."

The queen frowned yet again. "Where is she? We must schedule a trial as soon as possible. We need to focus on Darkstalker first."

Jambu motioned for both dragons to follow him. They flew for five minutes until the trio reached a clearing where there were at least five male big looking NightWings guarding a cell in the middle.

The cell wasn't much. Just a couple of thick sticks stacked together.

A female NightWing was lying down scowling so hard there were wrinkles in her wrinkles.

As Glory got closer, she noticed several things she wished she hadn't.

The criminal didn't have an eye. And in it's place was an empty socket with dried blood around her face.

The queen inwardly shuddered but landed anyway.

Her face was composed and her tone was business like. She faced the guard who had stepped forward and spoke.

"Where did you find her? I await to hear every detail."

The NightWing guard bowed and answered her question.

"My companions and I were searching at the outskirts of the rainforest. We found her an hour ago in a secret hideout. She didn't resist as she is still healing from a recent battle."

Glory nodded but threw a quick questioning glance at Deathbringer.

He wasn't looking at her. The assasin was trying to read Startoucher's motives for not resisting.

The queen turned back to the task at talon.

"What are her charges? That is, if you are ready to place them."

Deathbringer and the guard spoke together. "Dragonet-napping and interfering with peace."

This is not relatable to Darkstalker. It's just wasting my time! But first things first...

Glory hid the red that was trying to creep through her scales and said calmly, "Very well. I want her in the new trial room by noon. From there we will see if she's truly guilty."

The guards bowed and left, taking Startoucher in between them. The mysterious dragon threw a hateful look at the queen before reluctantly opening her wings and flying to the clear sky.

Of course Glory knew she was guilty. It was plastered all over her face. But she had input a law several weeks after becoming queen.

Every dragon must have a fair trial before being considered guilty.

And if the queen broke the law, then...it wouldn't have a good impression on her subjects.

Glory watched them leave before turning to Deathbringer.

"Do I have anything else on my agenda?"

Deathbringer nodded and said, "Today is your request day."

Glory groaned.

She hated those days. Listening to unimportant complaints. But she was queen, and days like these were traditions of RainWings.

She sighed and opened her wings, preparing for the flight head.

In between the flying Glory and Deathbringer grew closer. They talked about their favorite colors and how they felt about being who they were.

Too soon they reached the pavilion where the requests were taken.

Glory dived down, her bodyguard right behind her. The platform was swarming with RainWings and NightWings waiting to be heard.

They entered through the back to avoid the crowd. The queen settled herself on the wooden throne with flowers and waited patiently. She signaled to the RainWing guard to let them in.

The first guest of the day was a young female NightWing. She looked friendly and calm. Nothing suspicious about her.

She bowed down and looked expectantly at her queen.

Glory inclined her head in acknowledgment and said, "Good morning. I'm sorry I was late but I had to attend some important matters. Say your name and tell me why you're here." Deathbringer shuffled closer to Glory in case any danger arrived.

The NightWing let herself a tiny sigh of relief and began.

"My name is Enemy. But I promise you that I won't do anything against you. After all, you saved us all. As to why I'm here..."

Enemy looked at the wooden floor as if thinking how to put her next words.

"I wanted to request a transfer to the RainWing village."

Glory raised an eye ridge.

"Care to explain why?"

Enemy seemed to have relaxed somewhat by now. "I'm growing restless in my village. My family didn't have the cleanest of reputations and there are dragons out there who wouldn't hesitate to hurt me. And I'm hoping to learn something from the RainWing tribe. At least learn to do something that can let me take a break from all my stress. That is if you don't mind your majesty."

Queen Glory could tell that Enemy really didn't mean harm. Her head hung low and her eyes were pleading.

"How old are you Enemy?"

The female NightWing frowned a little at the question. Obviously not expecting that response.

"I am about seven and a half. Is there a problem your majesty?"

Glory chuckled and responded, "Not at all. I agree to your transfer. But, would you like to go Jade Mountain Academy next year? Some students there are not planning to go back next year and there are several spaces for NightWings. I'm assuming by your request that you like to learn as much as you can about anything, am I right?"

Enemy's face lit up and her brilliant smile was contagious.

"I'd love to your majesty! I'm truly thankful for the opportunity. You are right, I like to know as much as I can from a certain subject. I don't know why, but thank you again." She bowed and looked at Glory with respect in her eyes.

The queen eyed her carefully before saying, "You can call me Glory. You're the same age as I am. It's really weird when you call me 'your majesty'. It makes feel rather old. You can go. The guard next door will be more than happy to help you transfer."

Enemy gave another quick bow and a final thank you. She walked towards the other door with a skip in her step and disappeared from the room.

Glory looked curiously at Deathbringer who was staring at her weirdly.

"Glory, since when did you grow so compassionate? Last time I checked you were as kind as an IceWing."

The queen rolled her eyes and tried to smack Deathbringer with her wing but he dodged it easily. He chuckled but quickly regained his guard position as another requester came through the entrance.

This time it was a male RainWing asking for more sun time platforms to be built.

It went on like this for two hours until it was finally time to go to Startoucher's trial.

Glory gave an apology to the remaining dragons and flew off in the direction of the trial room. She flew at her own space while Deathbringer flew directly by her side.

That dragon really needs a break.

"Thank you for being my mommy and taking such good care of me Deathbringer. Really appreciate it. I'm so defenseless that I wouldn't know what to do without you." Her voice was layered with sarcasm and she added a higher pitch to it.

He rolled his eyes and responded, "Says the dragon who got put in a comma and got an ancient animus dragon in her head. Of course she can take care of herself."

Glory snorted but kept flying. An idea struck her an she put her mind to it. She changed her scales to match the vegetation around her and dove down.

She found a small stream and decided to drink from it. The cool and fresh taste of the water made her forget why she had come to the stream in the first place.

Deathbringer landed in a small clearing nearby and stared at Glory accusingly.

"Why do you love doing that? You know I hate it. What if something else happens to you? Queens are magnets for trouble."

Glory rolled her eyes and went back to drinking from the stream. She smirked as she caught Deathbringer's frown from the corner of her eye.

"I'm serious Glory. I don't want something else to happen to you. You have to stop running away."

She sighed and picked her head up to mumble, "There goes the mommy dragon again."

He walked over and lifter her chin up with his talon.

"Why do you love torturing me?"

She chuckled and said, "I don't know. Maybe because I don't love to do anything else."

Deathbringer smirked and leaned forward. His snout only centimeters from hers. "Are you sure you don't love anything else?" Glory could feel his breath in her face. Her heart beat faster but she refused to show it.

"Positive," she answered. She leaned forward and just as they were about to kiss, she extended her talon and pushed him away.

He looked at her with hurt in his eyes.

"What the stars was that for?!"

"To show you that we don't have time for this. I have a trial to attend and I can't risk for my emotions to get soft. Now, let's go mommy dragon. I don't want to waste more time than I have to." She smirked and opened her wings to take flight.

Deathbringer growled but followed her. The queen laughed but tried to lighten his mood.

"If it makes you feel better, I'll make it up to you tonight." She winked and flew faster to the trial room.

His thoughts went wild and his previous mood was gone. Deathbringer kept up easily and soon they landed at the entrance of the dreaded room.
Not knowing what was waiting for them.
