Chapter-16 Fugitive Egg

Deathbringer stumbled back and fell.

Him.

Father.

Destinyseeker.

Egg.

Those words did not belong together at all.

"How!? When!?"

"Death, remember our time on that tree a couple days ago? That's when it happened."

Deathbringer now realized what she was talking about, that moment when they were both confused.

"But we didn't even do it!"

"It's called magic sweetheart," she said in a very dragonet like way.

"Where the heck did you even get magic from?!"

"Oh, Darkstalker actually listened to my plan when he came. We agreed on something and he enchanted me to bear an egg whenever and with whoever I wanted to,"she said this as if it was nothing and gave him a cheery smile.

Deathbringer tried to fly out of the dusty hut, but Destinyseeker held him back by grabbing hold of his tail.

"Where are you going, partner?"

"What do you care? Let me go!" He was starting to get frantic. His voice almost sounded pleading.

"Death, what kind of partner are you if you can't even stay with your mate in the same hut?" Destiny sounded so sarcastic. Too sarcastic, as if she wanted to...be exactly like Glory.

His Glory.

"Don't you get it?! We are not partners! I don't even know if what you're telling me is true. How can I believe you if you have only been a liar your whole life! If you actually cared about me, you would be happy seeing me be happy. And you know with who I want to spend the rest of my life with? Glory! And you know why? Because she is special. She cares about me and doesn't annoy me all the time like you do. You are a sick and twisted dragon, Destinyseeker. You know that right!?"

Deathbringer huffed and tried to grasp as much oxygen as possible. His speech took a lot of effort from him.

Destinyseeker just looked as if she had been slapped on the face. Her shock at his fury didn't last long however, for she started to get a lot of pain. Pain she had never felt before.

The stress, it was too much for her.

She was going to lay the egg now. Two days earlier than what should have been.

"Egg, coming," she groaned.

His face became a dark gray from lack of blood.

Deathbringer left the hut immediately and swooped down to the village to look for help. Who was he anyway to witness an egg laying?

He landed gracefully and started to shout, "Someone, help please! My-" he hesitated before continuing "friend is laying and egg! Anyone? Someone help her! Please!"

It took a couple of seconds, but someone eventually did come to his aid.

A middle aged female Nightwing rushed out of a hut that was near the ground. She had towels in her talons and she looked ready for action. She had hints of dark blue in her scales, and her star spangled scales under her wings looked as if someone had splashed her with a bucket of them.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Startoucher, I'll help your friend for a small fee."

He thought this carefully but quickly, a fee. Probably some fruit he thought.

Deathbringer nodded and lead her to Destiny's hut.

By the time they got there she was already curled protectively around herself. Just a small black pile of scales in the corner.

Startoucher rushed over and started to help Destiny into a position that would benefit the egg better.

"Could you wait outside please?" Startoucher asked Deathbringer.

He didn't even bother to nod before he rushed out and sat by the entrance.

He raised his head and let the cool wind calm him.

How had everything escalated so quickly?

It was almost exactly like the volcano at the island. The pressure building up ever so slowly until it finally exploded.

Deathbringer looked up at the stars which shone with the power of a million fires. Their brightness however, dimmer than his problems.

If Destinyseeker was actually saying the truth, then he would be a father. At only thirteen.

An ear piercing scream came from the hut so suddenly that it made him jump backwards.

He wanted to look, but he shouldn't. It wasn't his duty to assist his mate in the egg laying process.

Oh, how he hated that word. A word that in his fantasies would always refer to Glory.

He had imagined what a Rainwing/Nightwing hybrid would look like ever since he met Glory in the borders of the Ice kingdom. And one word always came to his mind, beautiful. A daughter or son who would have all the good things from him and Glory.

Her sarcastic comments and his assasin abilities were only a couple of traits he dreamed about.

But like he said before, fantasies. Fantasies that would probably never come true now.

He sighed and thought about what he would do now. Deathbringer never really knew what a father was like, seeing that he never had one himself. Only mentioned once by his mother, and never again.

A final moan came from the hut unexpectedly and Startoucher rushed out carrying a bundle in her talons.

Deathbringer realized only a moment later that it was an egg.

A perfect black egg.

He risked a peek inside and was horrified at what he saw. Destinyseeker was trying to crawl towards where he was. Her face tear streaked and a talon reaching out towards the open sky.

"Dont-let-leave!" She gasped and collapsed on the ground.

It took him only a second to understand what was going on.

Destiny's egg was the fee Startoucher was talking about.

This was his chance to get rid of it. His chance to let everything go back to normal. But he couldn't take it. Even by magic, the egg was still his.

This was his duty as the male dragon in a family.

I need to protect.

He flew from the hut and let out a furious roar that battled against Darkstalker's.

He scanned the sky, and spotted a Nightwing frantically flying away from the village.

Deathbringer soared up into the air, his wings beating with so much power that it made the nearby trees shake.

He flew furiously, using his assasin training to blend out and then back in into the starry sky.

Confusing the fugitive dragon.

She was flying at full speed too, but she  somehow got off balance when she turned around expecting to see a mad dragon and instead seeing and hearing nothing.

Her wings faltered and she started to dive down, but she recovered quickly and kept flying. Although not as fast as before.

Deathbringer took the chance, his wings gave a final push and he lunged at Startoucher.

Their wings entangled, and in the process Startoucher accidentally dropped the egg. He tried to fly out of her grasp to reach it, but she didn't let him and kept scratching at him with her hind legs.

He fought like he never had before. It didn't matter that she was a female, the egg was the top priority. Deathbringer snapped at her neck and kicked with his hind legs. She dodged just in time, but he came back and slashed her across her face.

He was pretty sure he popped out an eye ball.

She screamed in agony and put a talon to her right eye. Well, the socket of her right eye.

Blood started to spurt out of the spaces in her claws and her wings missed more than two beats.

Startoucher spiraled down to the ground in way that would have been funny if not for the situation.

Now that that's taken care of...

He looked desperately at the ground below him, thinking that the egg must have already hit ground and cracked.

Deathbringer spotted it not to far from the trees. Still falling. He hadn't realized how far away from the ground he had been fighting.

He tucked in his wings and dived. He tried to use his arms to go faster in a swimming like way.

He was only a wing's length away, when another Nightwing came out of nowhere and snatched it speeding off to the right.

Peculiar thing was, he or she came back to Deathbringer.

It was a male Nightwing, he looked about ten years old. His face looked worried but kind.

Deathbringer was really confused now, who the heck was he? Was he going to take the egg for himself. And another thought came to mind. What would anyone want with an egg?

The strange Nightwing flapped shyly towards Deathbringer, cradling the egg in his hands.

The stayed like that for awhile, just hovering above the treetops

Deathbringer finally got the courage to say, "Mind if I have that back?"

The Nightwing who had forgotten briefly about the egg he had saved gently passed it to Deathbringer.

"Thank you-ah I'm sorry I don't know your name. Weird cause the island wasn't that big."

The Nightwing cleared his throat before answering, "My name is Vigilant, I was often on spy missions for the queen. I wasn't on the island much."

Deathbringer nodded in recognition

"Your mother was the one who's egg barely survived wasn't she?"

"Yeah, that's me."

The queen's bodyguard suggested they land, it wasn't good to be in the clearing for too long. Startoucher was hurt, but if he had judged her correctly, she wouldn't give up.

Deathbringer spoke all of a sudden, startling Vigilant.

"Why'd you save it? My, egg,"

"Startoucher, she ah-" his eyes grew a little watery but he continued "she stole my mother's egg that she had barely laid a week ago. I tried to go after her but, when I found her she had already smashed my little sister against a rock."

Vigilant started to sob slightly, so Deathbringer did the reasonable thing. He wrapped a wing around him gently comforting Vigilant only by a bit.

He saw that the Nightwing's face was full of sadness.

"I couldn't let it happen to anyone else, and I thought you were her until I turned around. That's why I took it away."

Deathbringer understood, kind of like his promise to not let another dragon he loved get hurt.

A promise that I have failed.

The two Nightwings headed back to the village, not saying a word about what had happened.

Vigilant followed Deathbringer until they reached Destinyseeker's hut.

Deathbringer entered quietly and gave a tiny smile at what he saw.

Destinyseeker had made a small nest made out of branches and twigs in the center of the hut, she was sleeping soundly and her talons were curved around an invisible egg.

He now realized he had probably been too harsh on her. He didn't blame her for doing what she did though. Destiny didn't have the happiest of dragonethoods, she only wanted to be happy for once in her life.

Deathbringer walked over and placed his egg in the little curve Destiny's talons had made.

It fit perfectly.

He sighed but went back outside where Vigilant was waiting for him.

"Shouldn't you go back to your mother?"

"She moved to Possibility a day after she lost my sister. I wanted to stay behind though. And I guess it paid off."

They both sighed, a sigh full of frustration and regrets.

"I'm going to go see Glo- I mean Queen Glory. I'm her bodyguard and I have to be with her now."

Vigilant agreed and flew away with him.

The sun started to rise, and it reminded him of that time with Destinyseeker on the top of the tree the other day.

It was now official, he definitely liked sunsets much better than sunrises.

Deathbringer thought about what awaited him. How was he going to tell Glory? Would he have to quit his job now? Would things ever be the same?

He shooed the thoughts away and focused on the simple task of moving his wing muscles to fly.

He'd cross that tunnel when he got to it.

The two Nightwings with troubled pasts now flew into the sunrise, heading to Rainwing village.

And not looking back at the Nightwing one.
