two: awsten's hungry car
Ashley: Ladies, gents, and nonbinary pals, let me show you Pete Wentz's wake me up drink. [grabs a large coffee cup] First, you want to get your coffee brewed and pour it in. [pours the coffee in] Second, four pumps of caramel syrup. [puts four pumps in the drink] Third, seven pumps of frap roast. [seven pumps of frat roast] Finally, TWENTY shots of espressos. [puts in twenty shots of espresso in, holds up drink] I like to call this, "Attack on Toilet Frappuccino".
Pete: Sweet! My drink is ready. [grabs the drink] Thanks Ash! [downs the drink]
Ashley: [looks at Pete in disbelief, turns back to the camera] And that's just the first drink.
—
"Awsten, are you ready to go?"
A green highlighter bounces up and down, no doubt there was a beaming smile behind his mask, "yes Miss. Ashley ma'am!"
Ashley stares at Awsten, the camera catching the regret in her eyes as she contemplates what she is doing.
—
Ashley: With the pandemic, some people are hesitant to step foot into the shop. So, hiring a driver seemed like the perfect choice. [holds up a finger] Here is the problem though, the food keeps going missing in Awsten's car. He says it's not him, and his car has been eating it. [raises eyebrow] Can you see the problem in that statement?
Awsten: EVERY TIME I DELIVER, AT LEAST ONE ORDER GOES MISSING. I DON'T EAT THE FOOD, IT HURTS MY STOMACH. SO, THE ONLY LOGICAL EXPLANATION IS THAT MY CAR ATE IT.
Camera Crew: ...
Ashley: Exactly. So, I decided to join Awsten on his delivery runs today to get to the bottom of what is happening. [takes deep breath] I had to make sure Taylor has access to my will this morning in case anything happens...
—
"Pray for me," Ashley mutters.
Beomgyu shakes head, "I would, but I'm an Atheist."
With a final whine, Ashley is dragged out the shop by a jumpy delivery driver. Beomgyu and Hayley watch in amusement, and hope that nothing happens to the pair while they are out.
The older of the pair pats Beomgyu's back, "I'm going to take my break."
He nods, "okay, I'll let Mr. Pete know."
She thanks him and heads out of the shop. Beomgyu returns to the machines and inspects them to see if he had missed any spots from earlier. Didn't seem like he did.
"Right corner behind Marcella. There is always a spot there that everyone misses."
Ah yes! Marcella, the biggest machine in the shop. Pete had warned the new employees how she was a difficult one to clean out of all of them because she was so sneaky. The right corner being her best hiding spot.
Beomgyu wipes down that area and grins when it is spotless.
"Thank you! Mr. Pete has told us about that spot so many times!"
He turns around expecting to find one of the other employees, either Dallon or Josh, behind him. Instead, it isn't employee at all.
No. It's the man from last night.
It's—
"Ryan Ross. I don't know if you remember me from last night..."
"Right, right..."
—
Beomgyu: I think it would be pretty hard to forget about Ryan Ross after last night. Basically, when I grabbed Dallon for Ryan and they saw each other... how do I put this? [scratches head] Well uh... sh*t went down.
—
"Dallon in?"
Beomgyu nods, "yet, I don't know if it's a good idea to talk to him. Especially with how it happened last night...
Ryan swallows hard and looks down at his feet, "yeah... uh, sorry about that. I didn't think he was going to react that way..."
The younger boy shakes his head, "it's fine. Don't worry too much about it."
Ryan nods, but anyone could tell that he was still very apologetic about what had broken out last night. It did take a rather nasty turn.
Finally, he looks up at the employee and dogs around in his coat pocket. He fishes out a white slip of paper and sets it on the counter in front of Beomgyu.
"Could you just make sure he gets this?"
Without hesitation, Beomgyu grabs the paper and puts it in the pocket of his work apron. Though his smile could not be seen due to the face mask, they way his eyes light up told Ryan that he would.
"Thanks kid."
—
Ryan: Uh yeah, I'm back from New York. It's uh... it's strange being back really. I had just grown adjusted to a bigger city before I moved back. [shurgs, small smile] Guess I have to get used to the small city life again.
Camera Man: Does anyone know you're back?
Ryan: [shakes head] Just Dallon right now. I uh... [scratches head] ...well, I wanted to talk to him first before everyone else.
Camera Man: What about?
Ryan: [bites lip] It's uh... nothing too important...
—
"AWSTEN!! YOU JUST RAN A RED LIGHT!!"
"THE LIGHT'S FAULT FOR BEING A P*SSY AND NOT STAYING GREEN."
"STOP SIGN! STOP SIGN!"
"I SEE IT!"
"THEN WHY DID YOU PASS IT?!"
"IT LOOKED FAKE!"
"ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?!"
—
Ashley: [leaning against Awsten's car, waiting for him while he is in the bathroom, anxiously bouncing on toes] I just called Taylor and told her to start arranging my funeral. I think the only way I am going to get out of this car ride is in a body bag.
Awsten: [jumps up and down] CAR IS FILLED UP! LET'S GOOOOOO!
Ashley: [stares at camera in fear, whispers] Help me!
—
"Is it just me, or was that lady eyeing you?"
Awsten smirks when he hears the compliment, "what can I say? Ladies love the A-Man."
Ashley rolls her eyes and slaps Awsten's arm, "she was in her seventies."
"And? Age is ju—"
"DON'T finish that sentence."
Awsten just shrugs in return which irritates Ashley a bit more. She snatches the keys from Awsten's hands and walks up to the driver's side, ignoring all of his protests.
Ashley climbs into the car and starts it up. She scratches off the order they just delivered, and sighs in relief as she sees there is only one order left.
"Thank God. I don't know if I can handle any more of this."
Awsten climbs into the passenger side and loos at the list, "one more order?"
Ashley nods, "yes, and then I am heading home early! Now let's get those bagels deliv—"
She cuts herself off when she takes a glance at the backseat. Her eyes widen and her body freezes when she notices the bagel box.
"Awsten..."
"Yes?"
"Please tell me you have secret claws."
"Uh... not that I can recall. Why?"
Before Ashley could answer, the sound of hissing catches the attention of both workers. Slowly, they peek down at the floor of the backseat and find a pair of dark eyes surrounded by black and gray fur staring back at them. Teeth bared and ready to attack.
"Oh. My. God."
—
Ashley: A raccoon. A raccoon has been stealing the customers' food for the past THREE F*CKING MONTHS. How does Awsten not notice? He is literally in that f*cking car every d*mn day! You would think he would notice a f*CKING ANIMAL IN THE F*CKING BACKSEAT OF HIS F*CKING CAR—
Awsten: [holds up the raccoon] I NAMED HIM BARRY.
Barry: [stares at camera] ...
—
"Mr. Dallon!"
Looking up from his magazine, Dallon grins as he sees Beomgyu walk into the room.
All the new employees were great, but Dallon had to admit that Beomgyu is his favorite. The kid was very sweet and respectful to everyone who deserved it. Yet, he has a mischievous side that only those he is comfortable with know about. Seeing him as a younger brother figure, Dallon took him under his wing. He showed the younger all he needed to know around the shop (probably the most active he had ever been at work since the library mishap with Brendon).
The addition of the younger man lightened the place up and made Dallon's moods less sour. He just knew how to make a room light up with a simple smile. He also knew what jokes to pull in order to break anybody out of a bad mood. He never pushed, he just provided nonjudgmental and sincere company.
Basically, Beomgyu was the shop's emotional support human.
Setting the magazine down, Dallon waves him over, "what's up kiddo?"
Beomgyu snorts, "you're literally 27."
"Still older than you."
With a chuckle, Beomgyu shakes his head. Dallon chuckles with him.
"So, what's up?"
Without responding, Beomgyu reaches into his apron pocket and hands a white slip of paper over to the older employee.
"For you."
Slowly, Dallon takes the paper and look down at it. A simple name was scrawled over one side.
'Ryan'
—
Dallon: [holds up the paper to the camera, rips it up, throws the pieces to the ground, stomps on it]
Camera Crew: ...
Camera Man: ...would you like to give some context?
Dallon: No, thank you.
—
Beomgyu slumps down in the bus seat and plugs his headphones in.
Unfortunately, Beomgyu is one of the few college students that does not have a car at the moment. The vehicle was just too expensive for him to have. Yes, his mother offered to help out with the car payment, but Beomgyu just couldn't put her through that. Not when she is already helping him pay for college. He didn't want to trouble her for more money.
(He already burdened her life the day she adopted him.)
Sighing, Beomgyu decides to stare out the window and watch the lights and buildings run into each other as the bus drives to its next stop. His music carries him into a different realm of his mind, to daydreams of him driving his own car around Galena.
It was a nice daydream to have.
Before his imaginary car could take him to the California beaches, a tap on his shoulder yanks him away from his dream bubble and sets him back in reality.
Frustrated at his daydream being interrupted, Beomgyu yanks his earbuds out and turns around, "wha—?!"
"You're cute."
That shuts him up immediately.
Well, that comment and the beauty of the tapper shuts Beomgyu up.
A man, Beomgyu assumes he is around his age, is leaning against the back of Beomgyu's seat. His chin is being held in the palm of his right hand, a charming smile graces his face. His bright pink hair dangles in front of his dark eyes. His dark eyes that are so, so charming, Beomgyu can't deny that.
This man is the definition of handsome.
Yet, he is also annoying for interrupting Beomgyu's quiet time.
Shaking his head, the brunette raises an eyebrow at the pink hair man, "is that all you needed?"
Pink hair man shrugs, "I mean, your name would be nice too."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"I'm a curious person. When I see something that strikes my interest, I just have to know more about it."
That line manages to trigger the red flush in Beomgyu's cheeks.
Quietly, he tells him, "it's Beomgyu."
Beomgyu turns around in his seat and throws his hood over his head. He fans himself as his face feels more red. Yet, it only gets redder when he hears laughing behind him.
Yet, the laughter didn't really sound like it wa mean spirited. So, that eases Beomgyu's nerves a bit.
The laughter stops, and it falls quiet for the rest of the bus ride.
As soon as the bus pulls up to Beomgyu's stop, relief floods his body. He quickly grabs his bag and walks up to the exit, happy to be back at campus.
The bus doors open, and Beomgyu takes a step.
"My name is Yeonjun!"
Yeonjun.
