Chapter Thirty Four
GEORGINA
As soon as the young man leaves the house reluctantly, a tall woman with dark hair and brunette radiant skin enters the house. She is wearing a suit all professionally and carries with her a red folder. Wen and I stand up right when the woman gets to the living room.
"Good afternoon, my name is Kendra Montgomery. I am the psychologist assigned to Alison's case," she introduces herself politely and we both nod.
"Wen Hoffman, it's such a pleasure," Wen offers her a hand and she shakes it.
"Georgina Wrestler, welcome," I do exactly the same thing Wen did and she shakes my hand with a kind smile.
"Who is the guardian of the child?" she asks opening her folder once we are sat.
"I am," replies Wen.
"Could you describe the girl's personality to me please?" he nods.
"Alison is a very active six year old girl, she likes being busy and learning. She's into asking about all what could possibly come to her mind. She's sweet and funny but above everything else she is a very obedient and intelligent child."
"Is there anything else I should be aware of Alison before talking to her?" asks again the woman.
"Well she is quite confused about the outside right now. I would appreciate if you could avoid the subject as much as you can," I almost roll my eyes at his request but when the woman nods I do my best to control that impulse.
"Does she knows what's happening?" we both shake our heads, "great, then I think we can start," she closes the folder standing up.
Wen is who guides us to the Test Room where the official in charge waits outside and opens the door for us when we arrive. Inside everything looks absolutely normal. Two trainees examine things inside the test tubes on the lab while another trainee observes the health charts of the girl. "How's our little one today Sanders?" asks Wen to the young man at the Control Table like he usually does while putting on his white gown and the gloves. He gives a pair to the woman and this one puts them on following instructions.
"Everything is under control sir," replies Sanders. On the other side of the room, Alison is in the corner building things with her Legos.
Wen types the code in the door making it open and getting the child's attention who immediately turns around. "Daddy!" she shouts standing up running to finally hug Wen's legs once the door closes behind Kendra.
"Hello Ali," says Wen passing his hand on her hair before pushing her a little away from him with her just smiling.
"Look it's purple," the child says showing him her arm as soon as she remembers something.
"He's going to kill us," says one of the trainees who are analyzing things and the other one laughs getting my attention.
"What happened?" I ask making them both to recover the composure.
"She wouldn't stop moving when we wanted to take a blood sample," one says. "I think we broke a vein". I roll my eyes at the lightness of how they take the situation.
"If he doesn't kill you, I swear I will do it myself" I say making them get serious again. I get closer to the glass . Wen bends down to reach her and examines the little arm of the girl. It's there when I get to see the bruise right in the flexure of her elbow.
"Did you move Ali?" she nods at his question and then looks at the woman. Wen sighs mad. He hates when the trainees aren't careful. They work with children, they can't expect them to stay still in front of a needle.
"Hey Alison today you have a visitor," he says holding her hands and the woman smiles at her. She looks back at Wen and nods, "Dr. Montgomery would like to talk with you for a while, okay?" he asks her like she really does have a choice and she nods serious. "That's my girl" he gives her a little pat on the point on her noise with his index finger making her let out a sweet giggle. Then Wen stands up opening the door and leaving the woman alone with the child.
"You can keep playing if you want," says the woman and Alison nods running back to sit down where the Legos are and begins playing with the woman standing behind her. "What is it that you are doing?" Kendra sits down on the floor leaning against the mirror and leaving the folder next to her.
"They fit," she replies putting two red blocks together and showing them to her.
"Are you going to match all the red ones?" replies the woman giving her another red block and Alison takes it joining it with the others but then shakes her head.
"If it's too tall it breaks," she explains and then looks at the woman. Her hands to be precise, "why do you have gloves?" this time the girl asks the question curious. The woman looks at her gloves.
"I don't really know," she replies confused forcing a smile and the girl bites her lip just like Madison does when she's thinking of something.
"I have gloves too," says the child a few seconds later.
"Really?" she nods excited and passes her legs to the front pulling out one of her socks to then put her hand inside and then opening and closing her hand with the sock covering it. I smile at the sweet way she chooses to demonstrate what she says and the woman does too.
"Who taught you that?" asks Kendra.
"Madison," replies the girl putting her sock back on her foot.
"Fantastic," mumbles Wen and I just ignore him.
"Who is her?" Kendra asks again.
"Dylan says she is my sister," replies the child. "But daddy says she is not a good girl". I look at Wen raising my eyebrows.
"Do you have a better answer Georgina?" he replies defending himself before I could say anything.
"At least the boy told her the truth without wanting to," I reply and he just shakes his head.
"Who's Dylan?" the girl thinks of it for a moment and then shrugs.
"I don't know," she replies. "But he gave me chocolates and a milkshake!"
"Do you like chocolate?" the girl smiles widely nodding and then her expression changes.
"I love chocolate," she replies surprising the woman who this time writes it on her folder. Wen frowns which makes me get the feeling that this is not good, for him "but daddy told me he won't give me more because I ate too much and that's not good for me."
"He gave you chocolates too?" the girl nods. "For what?"
"To behave well," she replies. "I need to be a good girl."
"And you are?" the girl wrinkles her nose making Kendra smile.
"Sometimes," she says sweetly getting to make her laugh.
"Tell me something Alison. Do you like it here?" she shrugs again frowning. "What do you like?"
"The park," she replies instantly with a smile. "But daddy is not there," the woman nods and writes a few more things. "I like being with daddy. But I love San Francisco!" The doctor laughs.
"You love San Francisco? What's that?" She asks her with a smile.
"I read it on Madison," Alison replies before getting back to play. "Dylan says it is a city like Los Angeles."
"Oh... and what is Los Angeles?"
"Is where I was with Madison and Dylan... and Levy," she replies without looking at her. "You are not too smart," states Alison making us all laugh, including Kendra.
"What did you do in Los Angeles?" Kendra asks again trying to regain the composure.
"I was with Madison," she says, "we went to a park, watch a lot of TV and we play buying Monopoly" she says remembering it, "I won". It surprises me as much as Wen and Kendra, "we bought chocolates, she put me some lipstick on, which is sticky, and we took a bath."
This time she surprises us all, including the trainees who immediately look at the child's room startled. "Do you like water?"
"No."
"Why?" she asks.
"Water is bad."
"Why did you take a bath if you don't like water?"
"Madison was with me," she says looking back at her. "She hold my hand so I didn't drown. Just when I slip because she wanted me to sit down."
We all gulp at the same time so synchronized that I could almost hear it when we do it. "Do you take baths here?"
"I don't like them."
"Her heart rate is increasing, sir," Sanders warns and Wen nods with her eyes stuck on Alison. She's just scared.
"Why not?" the girl shrugs looking at the floor.
"Daddy gets mad," she says making me gulp.
"Does he makes you cry?"
"It hurts when he gets mad," the girl's voice breaks and a very big lump gets formed in my throat. I think Kendra might be the same way right now because it's terrible watching a child suffering and not being able to do anything.
"Why are you crying?"
"I don't want a bath," she begins to cry shaking her head.
"Sir..." warns Sanders right when the woman tries to touch Alison and comfort her.
"That's what happens when they don't get what we do here," says Wen mad before entering the other side of the room. "Are you done Dr. Montgomery?" he asks immediately. "Alison, what do we say about crying?" he tells the girl serious.
"We don't cry," she says trying to calm down.
"It's okay Dr. Hoffman," replies Kendra standing up.
"It's not okay and she knows that," he says staring at Alison and she cleans her tears. "Is there any other question for her? She needs to rest."
"No, I think that's all," replies Kendra intimidated. "Goodbye Alison."
"Goodbye."
When they get back into the lab all of our looks turn to them and Wen turns around to look at her. "Dr. Montgomery, with all the respect that you deserve, I hope you understand that what we do here is not easy for any of us, even less for the child. We follow rules that help us to deal with all of this and that are stablished in order to benefit the girl above anyone else. We avoid physical contact prevent bonding emotionally with her. Believe me when I say that if she never has any of that she would never need it. We worry for her mental health as much as you do. We know she's a little kid that's why we try to reward her when we can. But most importantly we know that there are things she doesn't like and still we need to do to her.
"I ask you in the most politely and sincere way to not let the fact that she's young affect your objective judgment. I personally know it's hard because she's as sweet as vanilla but don't let everything what she has been through to be in vain. She's strong. Please make sure to see the whole perspective in this matter."
"I would Dr. Hoffman."
