Chapter Forty Four

MADISON

When I wake up I find Dylan, Levy and Alison playing Monopoly next to me on the floor. I feel like crying again. I turn around, hoping none of them noticed I woke up, but I hear Alison calls my name. In less than two seconds, her chin rests on my bed. She looks at me with her big blue eyes and a smile.

"Hello beautiful," I say stretching my hand to caress her cheek. She giggles.

"How are you feeling?" she asks with a sweet and spoiled voice that makes me smile.

"I am fine," I lie to her. I feel awful and this time... not just physically.

"Are you coming with us?" she asks excitedly when Dylan arrives. She hugs his legs.

"Where to?" I ask, despite my condition..

"Zoo!" she says. "Dylan says they have elephants. Have you seen an elephant?"

"On TV," I say and she smiles to me.

"They are giant, even when they are babies," she tells me, making me laugh. "Can we go now?" she asks Dylan, who nods making her rush out the room.

"Is it my turn to say hi?" says Dylan. I blush immediately. He smiles and kisses me. In that small moment, I forget about everything. For a moment there's just both of us in tune and makes me feel like I'm travelling back in time.

"What are they doing?" I hear Alison giggle. We pull apart. It takes me a moment recover my breath, but I would certainly love to kiss him again.

"Something gross," replies Levy from the floor making us laugh. Alison makes a disgusted face nodding at Levy's words.

"You should stay with me," I tell Dylan and immediately Alison comes to stand next to him.

"No," she says, "he is coming with me." She pulls Dylan to make him stand up. He obeys.

"I am sorry, I am not a man of just one girl," Dylan jokes. I roll my eyes and smile just like he does. "I love you," he says before turning to leave. I am sure I am as red as blood.

"Isn't it too soon for that?" I ask. He looks back at me and thinks of it for a moment.

"Nah," he replies walking backwards to the door. "I love you, Madison Wrestler," he says dramatically again before the door closes in front of him.

As soon as they leave me, I start crying again. "What's wrong?" Levy asks, sitting next to me. I just cry. He hugs me and passes his hand on my back trying to give me the comfort that I need.

"I want this to be over," I cry against his chest. He hugs me tighter.

"I know."

"I told her terrible things, Levy," I say getting a lump in my throat, flashing back to what I told my mother. I let go of him to search for his judging face, but instead, I find nothing but comprehension.

"She doesn't blame you," he says. I gulp. "It wasn't your fault. You're sick, that's all."

"Do you think I might be losing my mind too?" He shrugs.

"I can't picture you saying what you said intentionally," he replies. "Georgina told me that the serum attacks all the organs. I don't know why it wouldn't attack your brain." I just stay quiet. "Why didn't you tell me?" he finally asks. I gulp getting my eyes full of tears.

"I didn't want to worry you more," I say. "You'd have tried to fix it and it wouldn't have helped at all."

"I would have killed him by now," he says. I force him a smile and then, I finally spill what I have been thinking for a while now.

"Levy, there's something I haven't told anyone yet," I say. He looks at me, expectant. "He offered me a deal."

"A deal about what exactly?" he says. I feel awful for considering it but... it's my only chance.

"To save me from this. I knew what was going to happen. He told me and offered me an alternative."

"Which was..."

"Leaving with him," I say. His eyes widen.

"Please tell me you aren't considering that," he says shaking his head vehemently. "Are you serious?! Do you know what could happen if you do that?!"

I stare at him. "Do you know what will happen if I don't?" is my reply.

"Damn it Madison!" He says panicked and stands up. I gulp. "There's no way I am letting you do that."

"I am not asking for permission" I say and he sighs rubbing his temples. "He told me he just wants to keep my mother's attention away from the labs. But she won't get distracted if you tell her I'm fine... after I leave. I am sure everything would be okay, I would just be... somewhere else."

"You are 'sure' ? Are you listening to yourself? Madison, he tried to kill you! I am not letting you go and let him do... God knows what to you."

"I am going to be fine."

"You have said that so many times now..." he trails off. I gulp. "None of them have ended well."

"I don't want to die," I cry and he stiffens. "Is that so hard to understand?"

"Don't use that as an excuse," he says. "If you leave, you are going to destroy Dylan and your mother... and Alison, once she finds out. Wen has no intention of helping you, Madison."

"It's not like me dying would make them feel any better either. You are going to be there for them."

"And who's going to be here for me?" His words draws my eyes to him. My vision is blurry, but I can see his face all too clear.

"Levy..." I grasp his hand, hoping it says what I can't.

GEORGINA

"Gina!" Levy shouts from the railing. He's gone pale.

"What's going on?" Clarisse and me ask in unison.

"I don't, I don't know, she just... I don't know." He can't finish any sentence which begins to worry me. Did she die? I run upstairs and rush into the lab. When we arrive, Madison is twisting in pain on the bed. She hugs her legs against her abdomen and lies on her side.

I run towards her. "Madison, what's wrong sweetie?" I say and try to touch her. She shrugs my hand away.

"Let go of me!" she shouts. Her voice is strained. I give a step back. Below her, I see blood and some yellow fluid. The tube must have got disconnected or broken from her movements.

"Let me see what's going on," I say trying to get closer again.

"What are you doing with me!" she cries loudly with her eyes shut.

"Madison, I am your mother." I try to touch her arm. She shrugs away again before looking at me with bewilderment. "You are going to be fine," I say panicked with my voice breaking.

"I don't know you," she cries shutting her eyes. "Stop hurting me," she says between her cries. Wen enters quickly with gown and gloves already on.

"Don't dare to get near her you bastard!" I shout over my daughter's crying. I position myself to block her from him. "This is your fault."

"Madison, look at me...stop moving," Wen orders her.

"What are you doing to me?! It hurts!" Wen pushes me away to get closer. He turns her facing up ignoring her attempts to hit him. She finally opens her eyes. "Are you a doctor?" she says a little calmer before grimacing and start crying again.

"Yes. I am a doctor," Wen lies to her while I am just barely able to look at her with a million tears streaking my face. He ignores the tube on her lung and immediately checks Madison's eyes. "What is your name?"

"Madison," she says with a moan before Wen begins to palpate her stomach.

"Well done, Madison. Where are you?" he asks, checking her vital signs. She shakes her head.

"It hurts," she cries. He nods now looking at the tube that seems to be infected.

"Do you know the origin of your name?" he says in an attempt to distract her. She just looks at him. "It is a derivative from the name Matilda that stands for strong fighter. Did you know that?" he keeps telling her while trying to cure her. "And Wrestler, your last name. It comes from the word wrestling which also means fighting." I gulp at his amazing way to subside her. She continues to stare at him, unsure of what to think. "Now, I know it hurts very much but I need you to do what your name says and fight hard, okay?" he says and she nods with tears in her eyes. "Can you tell me where you are?" he repeats right before the door opens letting Sean in.

"In a hospital?" she replies. Sean walks toward her.

"Do you know who he is?" Wen asks again pointing at Sean. It surprises me to see her relaxed posture. She isn't gripping her legs with her hands anymore, as if the pain has disappeared.

"Another doctor," she replies, unsure. Wen nods.

"We are going to make you sleep so we can stop what's hurting you, okay?" Wen tells her calmly getting her attention. At the same time, Sean injects her a substance in her forearm and before she can realize what happened, she falls asleep.

"What happened?" Wen asks Levy. He glares back with tears in his eyes.

"Levy..." I press.

"I don't know...she was talking nonsense, and then it was like her look became empty. She started to shout and wanted to know where she was. She tried to get out from the bed. That's why the tube got broken." Levy's words rush into one another, completely freaked out. "It was like she didn't know who I was. She thought I was hurting her but I was trying to avoid her hurting herself."

I look at Madison's unconscious form, lying on a huge mess. It rips every single part of me. I would exchange my life for hers, to see her healthy and smiling with those bright eyes of hers, glowing with joy... one last time and for the rest of my life. I hate seeing her this way. I hate feeling this useless and unable to protect her. I hate the fact that I made her do what she did.

"Wen, please save my child," the words leave my mouth without thinking them any more. "Sean, it's all I am asking for. This is not her fault," I tell my husband.

"We'll do everything we can," he replies.
