X. Traitorous

Traitorous

/ˈtrādərəs/

adjective

relating to or characteristic of a traitor; treacherous

I made my way back to my tiny room. My footsteps were quick as I turned the corners sharply and walked briskly through the hallways.

How could I not see this? How could I not find out that she is a Raider? The signs were clear weren't they? All the things she would say, and the hints she would drop subtly.

I continued walking down hallways until I reached my room. The white door was open until I shut it quickly. I treaded to my bed and plopped down there in slight shock. It was right in front of me, but I didn't notice it. The obvious things she would say.

"This whole system is jacked up!" Janice let out an agitated breath, huffing at her computer. I glared at her and sent her a 'shut up' look. Her arms crossed over her chest in defiance.

I shook my head at her. She had been going through this phase; she had been acting defiant to the system. And I had to agree with her, the system was wrong, but I would never say that out loud.

"You agree with me! We should be able to live freely, and our twins should have free will."

I bit my tongue, trying to remain silent and not get myself into trouble. We had just learned what defying the system could cost us. Our lives. But Janice still spoke out freely.

"I do agree with you, but," I put emphases on that word deliberately. "We need to accept the truth and move along with our lives."

"So you're saying that I am supposed to sit here and listen to this injustice?" she practically yelled, her eyes widening and looking at me as if I'm crazy.

"We should be thankful we are alive is all I'm saying."

She rolled her eyes at that statement, not impressed. Another huff came out of her mouth as she leaned further into her seat. A lightbulb went off in her minute brain and she bolted upright, looking at me.

"Do you remember America?" she asked, off of the subject at hand.

"Yes?" I said partly in question, knowing she would turn this to her benefit.

"Well, in their Declaration of Independence from Britain, they stated that every man is created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. The system has taken this away from us. That is not right!" she stated, slamming her fist onto the table.

I rolled my eyes at her, keeping them trained on my screen. "Or America just had their beliefs uncoordinated to actual life."

Her nostrils flared in agitation. "They were trailblazers," she fought back sassily.

"They were pioneers if you remember correctly." She sat back in her seat, defeat overcoming her body as she slouches . "Look," she looked up at me slightly at my words, "I agree with you, but I won't go around screaming that I do. I have a wish to stay alive." She laughed at my sarcasticness.

"I understand Lis," she nodded and turned back to her computer, typing away on it and controlling her twin without another word.

I looked around again to find no one in my room. Hesitantly placing my fingers on the top of the folder, I opened the document. The first thing I found was the page similar the other girl, hers containing a picture as well.

Date of Birth: January 22, 2140

Member of colony: Yes

Parents: Florence and Keith Evergreen

Siblings: Heather Evergreen (older sister), Joshua Evergreen (younger brother)

Status: Non-Injected

I closed the file and nearly dropped it at the new information. She had never been given the serum to genetically engineer her like all the other citizens. Her parents obviously hadn't either, the fact that they didn't have twins was a significant sign of that. Everyone injected gave birth to twin children, and there were no exceptions.

I took a deep breath and opened the folder once again to read.

Spouse: None

Children: None

Occupation: Spy in the lab

Description: Protector of Miss Melissa Jennings and assistant with insight of the labs network.

The date of death column was blank, due to her lack of lifelessness, but I still wondered why the first part of her job description spoke of protecting me. Why would I need to be protected?

I looked over the page a second time to see if I missed something, then flipped the page when I was finished. The next page was the Raider symbol with the words 'Spy Intelligence' printed on the top. I took a deep breath and turned the page.

Agent Janice Evergreen has been undercover since the age of 3. She has been in every single lab that Melissa Jennings has. She has collected many intelligence files off of the hard drive over the years. She has also been one of the greatest agents on the field.

After the brief summary was more information as to what she has done, such as the file numbers that she has recovered, and the number of cameras she has set up in the lab for research. My jaw was slack as I read on what she had done for the Raiders, yet I had never seen before. She had me fooled, and everyone else to be exact.

That's why she always grew so nervous when they came by in search of a Raider. She was one. And she was scared of being found out. So was she just collecting information now, or was she coming back to the colony?

The next line confirmed my suspicions when I read what it said.

Retirement Date: When Miss Melissa Jennings is safely in the colony.

My ears registered the door jiggling only a few moments later. I had no time to hide the file before the blonde boy came in the door. At first he was smiling, then his eyes fell on the open manilla envelope. In an instant, his once pleasant mood was replaced and his blue eyes were cold and shooting daggers at me.

"It's not what it looks like," I assured him, probably confirming his suspicions. My body tried to cover the file as I stood in front of it.

"Then what is it? Because it looks like you have a classified file," he spat out, coming closer to me. His breath hit my face at his close proximity.

"If it were that classified, wouldn't the passcode for the door be more than an algebraic equation?" I asked him, looking back into his eyes with the same fierceness he was looking at me with.

"No one has ever been able to find it before," he said, cornering me in a close wall. His eyes were aflame with anger as his breath continued to hit my face harshly. My nerves were on edge as I took in his appearance. Before, his full height had never struck me as demeaning, but now as he stared at me, I grew scared of his full power.

My breathing increased as his chest collided with mine. His eyes were still glaring into mine though, not letting up on their angry pursuit.

"Why is it you are doing everything people have never done?" he asked, stroking my cheek softly, his eyes losing their intensity and changing to compassion and a gentle color of blue. It occurred to me that this boy would give me whiplash as his moods changed so often, but in some vague way, I was alright with that.

"I don't know," I said breathlessly. His frame, although it scared me with the possibility of what it could do, seemed to comfort me as I realized he could never hurt me. Then again, if I was wrong, I could easily make an enemy I could not compete with in the face of danger.

"Way to ruin the moment Lissa," he joked with me with a light chuckle emitting from his mouth.

"Sorry."

"Don't apologize," he stated softly. His hands continued to caress my face for a few moments before stopping mid stroke and his body taking a step back. "I should go."

With that he grabbed the file and began to make his way to the door. Before he could reach it though, I took a hold of his arm and tugged him back toward me.

"What was that?" I asked him angrily. If this were a cartoon, flames would be coming from my ears as I stare at the tall boy. My mood shifts from slightly scared to fully pissed off in a matter of seconds as I stare at the smug boy hovering over me.

He looked confused for a second before opening his mouth. "What was what?"

His ignorance was getting on my nerves. I breathed out a huff of anger as I mentally talked myself down from smacking the smirk off of his face.

"That. You pushing me up against a wall and saying something sweet, then turning around and leaving like I'm not important," I accused him, poking his chest multiple times, causing him to back away from me.

"Like this?" he asked, roughly pushing me back, not dropping the file on the ground. My back in contact with the cement wall, and I grimaced in pain. But the quiffed haired boy took no notice to my withering face as his chest was again pressed firmly against mine and his breath was hitting my face, making me almost lose all control at our close proximity. Almost.

"Yes. Like this," I whispered in his ear that was so close to my mouth as he leaned down to me.

"What sweet things did I say to you?" His voice grew husky and was incredibly hot, but dangerous all at once. I knew this was too good to be true, but my greedy mind took this moment into account and stored it into my memory for a later date. My obvious attraction to the quiff haired boy was taking over now that he was so close to me.

It took all my willpower not to jump into his arms that were currently circling my waist. He was doing this on purpose. He knew exactly what he was doing, and still continued to do it. But in a strange way, I was okay with him doing this.

"It wasn't what you said," I managed out, my voice strained. His head pulled away from mine as he gave me a questioning look. "It was what you implied when you said it."

"And what did I imply then Miss Jennings?" he asked, his face once again coming close to mine.

"That I'm making you feel something you haven't felt in a long time," I breathed out, my body reacting to the force that told me to get closer to him as I leaned in, our lips almost touching.

He thinks about what I have just said before responding. "What am I feeling then?" he asked me lightly, teasing me beyond my capabilities.

"I don't know." My nerves were shot as I struggled to compose myself and keep myself from falling into his arms.

"You don't know?" His eyes quirked up at this revelation.

"I don't. That's for you to know, and me to find out," I stared into his eyes, suddenly filled with confidence.

He smirked down at me, backing up slowly from me. His ankle turned as he headed out towards the doorframe of my room.

"Wait," I called after him. He stopped in his tracks and looked back at me. "Are you gonna tell me what you meant?" I questioned, tired of our back and forth banter. Truth be told, I was unsure if I could last another moment of his teasing without falling apart and allowing him to take advantage of my lack of experience.

He shook his head slightly at me, and turned to leave again. This time he stopped though, turning around to tell me something before leaving.

"You'll find out in due time, Miss Jennings." He winked and then left me to turn into a puddle on the freezing floor.

I stared at the door for a few seconds before shutting the door and changing to go to sleep. This had been the most eventful day of my life, and that blue eyed blonde is the most infuriating person alive. But I may be falling for his enraging attitude.
