XXI: Birdwatching club (again)
Since the following morning was their final day at the campsite, they decided not to plan any activities and just relax. Jjim was taking a nap on a camp chair, for some reason with his puffer jacket draped over him.
"Why is he wearing this—" Skip said, frowning at Jjim's motionless form. "It's literally May—"
"This friend has got great homeostasis," said Sunny, who was drinking some kind of iced tea while taking notes on a yellow legal pad.
"Homeo-what?" asked Won Do, "Is there a reason I don't know this word—"
"Didn't we all learn this in high school?" asked Hyeonmi. "I did, anyways, in biology—"
"Oh, I hated biology," said Won Do brightly. "I think I forgot it all—"
"Body temperature and constant state regulation," said Skip, looking up from an enormous book titled "HISTORY OF SCANDINAVIAN ARCHITECTURE".
"How are you reading that—" asked Won Do, looking over at Skip. "It's enormous—"
"It's calming," said Skip. "Hygge."
"What?" said Hyeonmi. "You're nuts."
"We need more ice," announced Daisy, who had stopped looking at his phone for a minute and gone to grab a water from the cooler, before noticing that most of the ice had melted.
"I'll go," said Deulgi, who had been laying lengthwise on one of the benches of the picnic table.
"I usually go with Hyeonmi," said Daisy, "It's heavy."
"Let's go, muscle guy," said Deulgi.
"I'm about to win, hold on," said Hyeonmi. He had been furiously tapping at his phone.
"Nooo, now," pouted Deulgi. Resentful of being ignored for a game, he peered over Hyeonmi's phone and blinked.
"Ahhhh," said Hyeonmi, desperately tapping. "Die already—"
"Your HP is so low," said Deulgi critically, who had moved next to Hyeonmi so he could see what was going on.
"This guy—" Hyeonmi grimaced, now swiping aggressively. "—keeps beating me up—"
"Beat him back," said Deulgi stoutly. "Punch him out—"
The phrase "FAIL! REPLAY MATCH" appeared on the screen.
"Noo," moaned Hyeonmi. "It took so long to get to that stage—"
"I'll beat him for you next time," said Deulgi. "Come on, let's get ice—"
"Ah fine," said Hyeonmi, getting up. "How long was I sitting there, I can't feel my leg—"
"Let's put some ice on it," suggested Deulgi. He snatched his binoculars from his bag as they passed the picnic table.
"The ice is right up the path," said Hyeonmi. "Why are you—"
"Shhh," said Pideulgi, looking around at everyone else conspiratorially. "I'm on a mission—"
"What," laughed Hyeonmi.
"Let's go," grinned Pideulgi. "I wonder who else is up here—"
They walked up the path until Deulgi turned abruptly left.
"The ice is straight—" said Hyeonmi, making a vague gesture toward the building in front of them but finding it more hilarious than anything.
"I know," said Deulgi. "We are not going straight. We are going left—"
"There's tigers," said Hyeonmi, not seeming to care that there were no longer wild tigers in Korea. "You're going to get eaten by a tiger—"
"Not with you here I'm not," said Deulgi. "You can beat up a tiger, right?"
"I think the tiger would beat up me," he replied.
They walked through the trees on a small, faint path which didn't seem to get much foot traffic. Deulgi had his binoculars glued to his face.
"I'm not looking at the ground, so tell me if there's a cliff or something," said Deulgi warningly.
Hyeonmi laughed.
"Why are you laughing," asked Deulgi indignantly.
"You're funny," said Hyeonmi.
"Oh, what's that," said Deulgi. He had seen a flash of blue through his lenses. "That blue thing—"
"I do not see a single blue thing," said Hyeonmi, straining his sight forward.
"No, no, right there," said Deulgi, pointing vaguely forward and to the left.
Hyeonmi squinted into the trees. "Oh that? I think it's just a tag on one of the trees—"
"What kind of tag?" asked Deulgi.
"No idea," said Hyeonmi.
"Hmm."
They continued for a while, with Hyeonmi walking behind Deulgi with a somewhat odd cadence, as Deulgi kept changing the length of his stride while looking through the binoculars.
"I'm going to trip over you," said Hyeonmi.
"Don't trip on me," answered Pideulgi, preoccupiedly adjusting the focus on his eyepieces while looking through them.
Deulgi stopped suddenly and Hyeonmi bumped straight into his back.
"Ow," said Deulgi.
"Ah, seriously, you—" said Hyeonmi, pretending to slice him from the back like a ninja.
"Dude, dude, there's a person," said Deulgi. "A person, let's go see—"
Deulgi walked forward slowly, trying to keep the focus on whoever he had seen.
Hyeonmi took out his phone and started filming him. "You look like a crab," he laughed, unable to contain himself.
"Shh," said Deulgi. He continued crab-stepping forward. "It's a grandma," he said delightedly.
The pair crouched down by some rocks. "Look," said Deulgi, handing over the binoculars.
Hyeonmi let out another high pitched giggle.
"What is so funny," whispered Deulgi.
"Why are we spying on a random grandma?" he said in a choked whisper.
"We are not," said Deulgi indignantly. "We were taking a walk and looking at nature and we happened to see a grandma."
Hyeonmi looked up from the binoculars for a minute and looked at Deulgi. "Aha, so we're birdwatching, huh?"
"Uh huh."
"Interesting," declared Deulgi after a few minutes, having taken back the binoculars.
"What?"
"Grandmas are not very turbulent," he concluded.
"Depends on the grandma," said Hyeonmi.
"Why, did you have a turbulent grandma—"
"It could happen," he shrugged. They got up and kept walking. "Are we ever going to get ice?" added Hyeonmi.
"Eventually."
"Everyone's water is going to get warm—"
"Ah, just a little farther—"
They kept walking a bit until Hyeonmi said, "Wait, what's that?"
"What," asked Deulgi, scanning around with his binoculars.
"That red thing over there," said Hyeonmi. Since Deulgi didn't seem to be getting anywhere, he grabbed his shoulders and turned him around a little bit until he was facing the little far off triangle of red.
"Red," Deulgi said delightedly. More crab steps. "Oh, a tent," he added, after a few more seconds of looking. "Here, you look." He turned, positively beaming, and handed the binoculars to Hyeonmi again. Hyeonmi tried to find the red patch again but landed on Deulgi's face instead. He giggled and Deulgi turned to look at him. "What?" he asked.
"I can see your philtrum," said Hyeonmi. "It's funny—"
"What the—" laughed Deulgi. "You are so weird—"
"Hey, it wasn't my idea to go spy on randos in the woods," said Hyeonmi defensively.
"We are not 'spying on randos'," protested Deulgi. "We were taking a walk—"
Hyeonmi didn't reply; he was looking through the binoculars again. Catching a flash of black hair, he suddenly said, "Oh no. Let's go."
"Go where?" asked Deulgi, frowning.
"Let's just go get ice," said Hyeonmi impatiently. "He's going to come talk to us—"
"Who?" asked Deulgi urgently.
"Park Byeonggyun," hissed Hyeonmi. "Come on—" He grabbed Pideulgi's arm and started trying to drag him away.
Deulgi started immediately trying to pull away. "So what?—what is your problem—"
"He'll see us," said Hyeonmi urgently. "Let's go—"
Deulgi looked at Hyeonmi's steely expression and abruptly said, "Ok, ice, let's go." Hyeonmi looked immediately relieved. Though it was Hyeonmi who still clung onto Deulgi's wrist, he trailed behind as they ran back up the trail. When they finally got back to the main path, Deulgi turned to him, panting slightly. "What," he said, "is your problem— with Park— Byeonggyun?" he asked, wiping sweat off his upper lip.
"I don't have a problem—" started Hyeonmi somewhat indignantly, not even winded, "It's rude to spy on people—"
"You didn't even make eye contact with him yesterday," said Deulgi. "You were annoyed I have his KaTalk—"
"Yeah, what's that about," said Hyeonmi suddenly. Deulgi stared at him with raised eyebrows. Hyeonmi looked off to the side, somewhat agitated. "Are you friends with him—"
"Why on earth does that matter—" started Deulgi, looking at Hyeonmi with exasperation.
"It doesn't," said Hyeonmi insistently, though he did not elaborate.
Deulgi looked at him for a second. "Wait— is this— do you also want his number?? Or like a formal introduction? Or..?" he trailed off, not really sure how far he should take the question.
"What? Why would I want his number?" asked Hyeonmi, totally confused.
"It seems like you're really into discussing Park Byeonggyun but you literally can't even talk to him—" said Deulgi, staring at him intently.
"I am not into discussing—"
"We are literally discussing him right now," said Deulgi.
"He's just some rando," said Hyeonmi. "We didn't even know him two days ago."
"So why did you just throw a fit?" asked Deulgi pointedly.
No answer.
"Ah, you're so weird, are you jealous—"
"What?"
"You heard me."
"Just don't.. go hang out with him and look at stuff with binoculars," said Hyeonmi tersely, handing the binoculars in question back to Deulgi, as he had been carrying them this whole time.
Deulgi suddenly burst into hysterical laughter. "That's what you're worried about? Dude—"
"Ah, just don't, ok?" Hyeonmi looked intently at a random tree off to the left and pulled down both his sleeves, embarrassed.
"Why," said Deulgi, still laughing, now looking at Hyeonmi with the binoculars.
"He's too normal— he won't get it—"
"I know," said Deulgi, extremely amused.
"That's a club activity," continued Hyeonmi, riled up. "Club members only—"
"You are so ridiculous," said Deulgi. "Binoculars—" He laughed again, slinging an arm over Hyeonmi's shoulder. "There is literally no danger of me going to go spy on randos with Park Byeonggyun," he said, patting him on the chin for emphasis.
"I thought you said we were taking a walk," said Hyeonmi, somewhat mollified.
"Ok, taking a walk," Deulgi said. "And finding ice." He shoved his hand in Hyeonmi's hoodie pocket as they finally walked over to the main building. After a minute of silence, Hyeonmi glanced over at Deulgi. "Ah, stop it, why are you smiling like that—"
"Like what?" asked Deulgi, not ceasing to smile gleefully.
"Ahhh, stop," said Hyeonmi, jabbing him in the ribs.
"Ow," complained Pideulgi, laughing madly, "Ahh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry—"
Hyeonmi relented, albeit reluctantly.
"I'm not sorry," added Deulgi impishly, turning back with his eyes gleaming.
"Hey, you, come back here," yelled Hyeonmi, as Deulgi took off running. "Ah, seriously—"
