XIX: Toothbrush club
"That's what you're eating for breakfast?" asked Skip with genuine concern. Hyeonmi, who was shoving what appeared to be chocolate into his mouth with his other hand clamped around a carton of milk, looked up.
"What's the problem with my breakfast?" he asked, looking first at his left hand and then his right as if he'd suddenly see a problem with one or both choices.
"Chocolate—" started Skip. "Isn't it bad to start the day with that much sugar?"
"Oh, it's a chocolate protein bar," said Hyeonmi brightly, fully reassured that he had made an excellent breakfast choice, given that this was Skip's only concern. "It's sugar free!"
"Ah, I see," said Skip. "Wait, how many grams of protein does it have—"
Daisy, who was sitting nearby putting on socks, cracked a smile at Skip's full track change. Hyeonmi pulled the last few bites of his bar out and handed the wrapper to Skip.
"I always think I should start working out more," said Skip ruefully. "I think I'm pretty out of shape."
"Try and lift that rock over there," suggested Jjim, who had happened to walk by at that exact moment.
"Then you carry him down to the hospital yourself," scoffed Sunny, "As if we need spinal hernias at this age—"
Daisy started losing it. "'At this age'? What are you, 73?"
"It's never too late for preventative health measures," said Sunny gravely. "My doctor told me—"
"Here we go," muttered Jjim.
"—that I was at a higher risk for type II diabetes because of a family history—"
"You should work out too, then," suggested Hyeonmi, now downing the carton of milk as if it was his last meal.
"Not that high of a risk," clarified Sunny, immediately balking at the idea.
Suddenly a zipper sound was heard and a slowly blinking Won Do and Pideulgi emerged from their tent, which had so far not made a sound in the early morning light. Out of four tents, only Skip was lucky enough to get his own, so it ended up that Jjim and Sunny, Daisy and Hyeonmi, and Deulgi and Won Do were left to share.
"Isn't it—" Won Do stifled a yawn and stuck his finger in his left eye to presumably dislodge an eyelash. "Isn't it too early—" (another yawn) "—for this?"
"Early for what?" said Sunny, supremely unimpressed. "If the sun is up, isn't it natural for living things to be up too?"
"He's not being very sunny," said Won Do crossly, "I want to go back to bed." He shot Sunny a look and tried, with little success, to comb his messy silver hair with only his fingers.
"There's bread, or you can ask Hyeonmi for one of his protein bars for breakfast," said Skip, putting on a cardigan over his slightly wrinkled T-shirt.
"Classic," said Deulgi, who had finally managed to speak for the first time that morning. He was still blinking somewhat slowly. "Gotta bulk up."
"Bulk up," agreed Hyeonmi, glancing briefly up at him. "Your shirt is on backwards."
Pideulgi stared at him unblinkingly for a few seconds before processing what he had said and looking down at his shirt.
"Oh," he said mildly. He shuffled over to the cooler and started taking out cheese sticks. "I found cheese," he further announced.
Hyeonmi snorted into the now empty milk carton as he tried to take his last sip. "Did you guys sleep?"
"Yeah," said Deulgi. "It was cool out—"
"So he stole all the blankets," said Won Do, rolling his eyes. "I had to put hot packs in my socks—"
Daisy laughed. "Wow.. nice job."
"Oh, did I?" said Deulgi with some surprise. "Sorry." To make up for it, he held out his cheese stick to Won Do, who refused a bite and went to go look for something else to eat.
"Does someone want to go hiking today?" asked Skip, who as usual was already thinking of the day ahead.
"Sure," said Daisy, who was always a good sport.
"Are the trails marked with signposts?" asked Sunny suspiciously. "If not, it's dangerous—"
"We're at Bukhansan, not the DMZ," said Won Do. "There's probably Wifi here—"
"There is," supplemented Daisy, who had immediately opened up his phone settings to check. "It's actually better than it is by my house—"
"As expected, Korea," said Jjim, who had reappeared after going to change. The only difference between the clothes he slept in and his new outfit was a different track jacket over his T-shirt, but it still managed to look good.
Daisy made this exact observation, looking at him and saying incredulously, "I guess handsome people don't need to think about fashion—"
"This is fashion," he insisted. "Neighborhood fashion—"
"I have never heard of neighborhood fashion," said Deulgi, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, you haven't?" said Jjim, delightedly. "Well everyone knows it—"
"Yeah, because it's the fashion you wear to go to the CU down the street because you ran out of mouthwash or something—" said Sunny, impervious to Jjim's attempts to make an elaborate joke.
"Aghhhh you stole my line," said Jjim, looking supremely tortured. "Why me—"
"Well, have you ever heard of volleyball fashion?" asked Pideulgi. "It's the latest craze—"
Hyeonmi choked on his second protein bar. "What?"
Deulgi turned to him with a mischievous look. "Yeah, it's super easy, you just wear the same thing every day, and make it only grey and white—"
"Hey, you," said Hyeonmi, putting out his hand as if to smack him.
Instead, Deulgi gave him somewhat of a high-five which somewhat turned into a multi-step handshake.
They both resumed their respective breakfasts as if nothing had happened.
"When did you guys make a handshake?" said Daisy, seeming impressed.
"No idea," asked Deulgi, yawning. He shuffled back over to the cooler, dug around in the melted ice, and then returned to his previous spot without getting anything. "I really have to shower, I can't think."
"If anyone wants to come hiking, I'm leaving in like 30 minutes," warned Skip. "If the sun gets too hot it's a hard time—"
"I'll come if I'm not the only one," said Deulgi. "I'll be quick." He ambled down towards the path.
"Actually I think I'll wash up too," said Won Do, who despite all the ruckus still looked filmy-eyed, as if he had one foot firmly planted in the dream world.
Daisy stretched, a bit like a cat getting up. "Tell me if you see the toothbrush guy—"
Won Do laughed. "Yeah, sure."
Hyeonmi suddenly looked up, alarmed. "Which toothbrush guy—"
"You know, the guy sharing Deulgi's locker," Daisy said, checking his Instagram without looking up.
"I have to brush my teeth," said Hyeonmi suddenly. He got up and started trying to find a clean pair of socks.
"Suddenly?" asked Jjim suspiciously. "What, do you feel a cavity right now—"
"Can you feel cavities?" asked Won Do. "Before the dentist, I mean."
"Why, do you think you have one?" asked Sunny.
"No," said Won Do hurriedly. "I just hate the dentist—"
"Me too," admitted Skip. "It's the worst—"
"Should I bring a flashlight to go hiking?" asked Daisy, from where he was packing his backpack in advance.
"I'll be back," said Won Do. He and Hyeonmi went the way Pideulgi had disappeared a few moments earlier.
The forest was relatively silent as the pair headed up towards the showers, with only the morning calls of a few birds breaking through the sound of the trees.
"Have you gone camping before?" asked Hyeonmi interestedly. "Before this, I mean."
"Yeah, I had a school trip in high school," Won Do answered. "It was a bit more boring though because we had a lot of counselors who made sure we didn't wander off anywhere."
"I had the same situation with my volleyball team, but it wasn't camping," said Hyeonmi. "We had to go to Busan for a tournament—"
"I've always wondered what it was like, being on a sports team," said Won Do thoughtfully. "Are you all like best friends?"
"We're all friends during practice or training, but I don't think many of us hang out other than that very much," said Hyeonmi. "Other than when we get together to eat after games or whatever."
"Huh," said Won Do. "There aren't any math clubs so I wouldn't know."
"Want to make this a math club?" asked Hyeonmi. "It's easy, you do math and we just watch you do math—"
"What are you saying," said Won Do, laughing. "That's not a math club it's like a "study with me" vlog—"
"Well except I don't think anyone would even study," said Hyeonmi reflectively. "Except maybe Skip, there must be some reason he carries all his books arou—"
He stopped mid-sentence as they had arrived at the showers. They tried to enter, but some guy was leaving, hurriedly drying his hair with a towel as he walked out in sandals.
"Sorry," the guy said apologetically. Since his hair was hanging over his eyes, he evidently could not see where he was going, and accidentally bumped into Won Do on the way in.
"No worries," said Won Do, continuing in.
He and Hyeonmi went to their respective lockers and started pulling stuff out, but the guy had walked back in, fumbling with his key to put his towel back.
"Sorry," he said again automatically. The reason he had left to begin with was suddenly obvious as the small space where the lockers were was not really appropriate for aggressive hair-drying, so now the space was really cramped. He took out his key and finished putting his towel away before bowing somewhat apologetically and leaving once more.
"That's Deulgi's key—" said Hyeonmi, as soon as the guy had left. "#23, I saw the number—"
"No way," said Won Do, laughing. "Did we get to see the toothbrush guy after all?"
"I thought he'd be some random grandpa," said Hyeonmi, disgruntled, for some reason finding the fact that the aforementioned guy looked to be closer in age to them to be bothersome.
"What? Who cares?" asked Won Do, legitimately confused, as he put his glasses in his locker. "He seemed nice, glad Deulgi isn't sharing with a weirdo—"
"Where is he, anyways," said Hyeonmi suddenly. "Wasn't he showering—"
"Yes," said Deulgi, appearing around the corner shirtless and with a towel draped over his head like a balaclava. "Use my shower, the water's already warm—"
Hyeonmi turned around and looked at him suddenly without saying anything.
"Did you know the toothbrush guy is actually handsome?" asked Won Do brightly.
"Yeah, I saw him last time, remember? He got here the same time I did," said Deulgi, pulling out his own #23 key and going over to the locker that had just been opened.
"You didn't say he was handsome last time," said Hyeonmi pointedly.
"Oh, didn't I?" said Deulgi mildly. "Anyways, he said he's up here for fun because he wanted to get away from the city for a bit—"
"Oh, that's nice," said Won Do.
"Are you guys friends now, or what?" asked Hyeonmi, still blankly staring at Deulgi. Evidently he was fascinated by the toothbrush guy.
"Maybe," said Deulgi. "He seems a bit.. normal, though—"
Won Do started laughing. "Classic. I guess we know we're all weird then, since Deulgi hangs out with us—" The last part of his comment was directed to Hyeonmi who laughed somewhat preoccupiedly.
"Have a good shower," said Deulgi, much more animated after the hot water. "Hey, muscle guy, my shower is the one at the end," he added to Hyeonmi. "Warm water will warm up your muscles—"
"I actually came to brush my teeth," said Hyeonmi suddenly, remembering why he had been there in the first place. "Wait for me."
Deulgi shrugged and nodded. "I'll get dressed slowly, hurry up."
Won Do called out as he headed in, "I'll use your shower! I hate cold water—" His footsteps receded towards the far end of the hall lined with showers. Meanwhile, Hyeonmi, in his hurry, had forgotten to put his hair up while brushing his teeth, and it kept almost getting in his mouth. He tried to push it out of his face but his toothbrush ended up dripping onto his forehead.
"Ah, stop it," said Deulgi, somewhat affectionately, who had finished drying his hair and had been washing his face at the sink next to him. "You're getting toothpaste in your hair, stop it—"
Hyeonmi froze. "Oh no, where—"
"You didn't feel it? There's toothpaste on your forehead," said Deulgi. He looked at Hyeonimi critically, his eyes quickly scanning over his hair and face looking for more toothpaste. He wet his thumb a bit and rubbed at Hyeonmi's forehead with his finger. "It's gone now."
"My hair keeps getting in my face," said Hyeonmi, returning to his teeth-brushing. "I think I should cut it."
"Don't cut it," said Deulgi firmly. "Do not cut it."
"I was growing it out," Hyeonmi admitted. "I want to look cool with a headband during games."
"You do look cool," said Deulgi.
"You've never been to a game," said Hyeonmi.
"I meant—" said Deulgi, "—even with toothpaste on your forehead." He grinned at Hyeonmi in the mirror.
