The Switch
Grant wasn't more than five feet from where I was standing. I witnessed him cuss as he looked around for his missing date. It was clear how much he liked her, which works out perfectly for me. I need him to care more about her than himself. It was time for me to see how much he truly cared about his little lady.
"Grantheis?" I pretended to be shocked as I approached him. I didn't want him to sniff out the trap before it was set.
He whipped his head around so fast I was surprised he didn't break his neck. "What did you do?"
I took a careful step towards him. "Oh nothin', but I thought you was looking for your lover."
"Don't ever call us that, especially in front of her. Where is she you f**king creep?!" He boomed, clenching his jaw.
"Come with me." I say, turning on my heel. Angry steps follow me to the cloning room, the only place I know I can talk to him privately. I engage all the door's locks before I speak again. I was not about to let him run away before I was finished with him.
What?!" Grant says, checking the room for the girl who'd stolen his heart and hopefully mind.
I motion for him to sit down on one of the cold metal chairs but he keeps searching. "I need a favor that I think will benefit us both."
He freezes. "Why are you talking like that? You sounded normal for a second."
I nod. "See how serious this is?"
"What's the favor you want me to do that I won't? Go on, humor me, but make it quick because I want her back like yesterday and I'm getting antsy."
I chuckle. "Always the impatient one. Haven't you heard that good things come to those who wait?" When he doesn't say anything I go on. "I want Wishes."
"Okay." He says, drawing out his syllables.
I make my way to him with confidence. "She wants you, I want her and you want that lovely blonde lady you brought here. So, it seems like if she wanted me you and I could both get what we really want."
"Yeah I'd love for Wishes to stay out of my shower, but let's be real it's not going to happen in this lifetime." He scuffs.
I choose my next words very carefully. "You're right, she won't leave you alone, but if she thinks I'm you you'd be off the hook, correct?"
"Stop talking like that, it's creeping me out." He pauses, what I said finally sinking in. "How would she think you're me? We are literally night and day."
"I have the ability to switch us into each other's bodies." I put it all out on the table, knowing he'll reject the idea.
He laughs. "Me in your body? Absolutely not! No way in h*ll that's happening! I don't know if you've realized how little I like you or not, but I'd rather be colored pink than be you."
I shrug. "Okay, then I guess I'll just have to use that tiny chip I implanted in your girlfriend. Your call."
He narrows his eyes. "What chip?"
I keep my voice low. "The one that allows me to control her mind and every move. I can make her do anything I want."
"You b*****d!" His voice grew deep and angry, not his usual mocking jokester tone. I had his attention now.
"I won't have to use it unless you make me." I warn him.
"She's never going to believe you're me. She's way too smart for that. It won't work." He says, exasperated.
I stop him from going any further down that rabbit hole. "That's for me to worry about. All you need to worry about is convincing Wishes you're me."
"Do you have any idea how hard that's going to be for me?! We're nothing alike." His voice comes out strained.
I shake my head. "That's where you're wrong. We have a lot in common actually. One of the things we have in common is we are both very good at pretending to be someone we're not. We do it all the time."
He just stares at me. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Go on, pretend you're me right now." I encourage him.
He makes a face and takes a deep breath. "I just want my Wishey to be happy, Dilly will do anything for her! I ain't even going to let you take her Granthies!"
I grin, impressed, but not surprised. "You're going to be fine. There are only two things you need to know about me to succeed; I don't let anyone in this room and I never stay in one place too long. You should leave every conversation after about five minutes no matter who you're talking to and what they're saying. Understood?"
"Yeah, I guess. I hate that I'm doing this, but I hear what you're saying. Not to freak you out, but I do want to point out that we've been in this conversation for at least six minutes now." He shifts and looks deep in thought. "To be me you have to know that I don't leave a conversation until I'm satisfied and I've achieved my goal. I also never give anyone all my attention for longer than two weeks in a row. I start to avoid them after that."
I make a mental note of what he said. "Why do you do that?"
"Why do you leave a conversation after five minutes and why do you keep people out of here?" He retorts.
I take a moment to think, he's very good at this and he's smarter than I gave him credit for. "Partly for privacy and partly because I can only keep my facade up for so long before I become exhausted. This conversation is only continuing because I'm not hiding anything. I kick people out of here because I don't want anyone but me making clones. Now you, remember I am in control of your girlfriend's fate."
I study his demeanor and nonverbal cues as he speaks, I need to learn this guy and fast. "This is where the clones are made?! Well, I'm breaking everything in here." He looks around the room, intrigued. He continues talking with no eye contact. "I've found persistence is key. I get exhausted too, trying to be whoever I'm talking to's perfect man and I'm also easily bored."
I process his lack of eye contact, his uninterested tone and the way his voice deepened when he talked about something that was serious to him. "Good to know. I don't mean to rush things, but we only have so much time before Wishes starts to wonder where we are."
"What about the girl I brought here?" I notice his calculated avoidance of saying his lover's name. He is protecting her.
A pang of guilt flows through me when he talks about her. "I told her things about you that I knew would push her away. I had to. I can make it up to you by promising I won't kiss her or have any kind of romance with her at all."
His eyes narrow and he looks at me with a murderous glint. "What kind of things?"
"I told her that you were intimate with her mom." The words feel like lava in my mouth so, I spit them out as quickly as possible. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience but I knew it'd push her away while we completed this mission."
Grant had his hands around my neck and my back against the wall. He was stronger than I thought too, interesting. "What?! What the f**k is wrong with you?!"
I roll my eyes back in my head, feigning that I'm about to loose consciousness. Grant may be strong, but I was manipulative. I knew how to make him listen. Grant wanted answers so, he'd want me awake and able to respond. He slowly loosens his grip on my neck, but doesn't step back.
To his frustration I start adjusting my shirt. "You did sleep with her mother didn't you? That was going to come out eventually, don't you think?"
"I didn't know her when that happened, that's not fair!" His voice is nearly a whisper. "I needed to be the one to tell her. Now she thinks I'm keeping secrets."
I put my hand on a distressed Grant. "You haven't lost her yet, but you will if you don't listen to me. It's time for the switch."
His eyes shift nervously to the cloning machine. "I don't have a choice, do I?"
"No." I answer simply. It was true, he was cornered. "It's only temporary. You'll be back to you in no time."
He doesn't look convinced, but nods anyways. "Let's just get this over with."
"Wait!" He stops me before I move. "Who was I just talking to if you have my date?"
"Wishes."
"F**k!" He gasps. "Well, tell her I'm not going on a date with her."
I walked over to the metal cabinets and unlocked them, carefully picking out the device I needed to carry out my plan. I hold the bright little cylinder in my hands and walk over to Grant. He stares at my hands as I press the button to turn the contraption on, which sends an electric current surging through the two of us.
When I wake up, I'm in Grant's body.
