The Immortal Past (1/10) - r

In the train, Silver woke up just a few seconds before Amy, successfully masking his presence next to her. He quickly got a splash on his face and dressed. Then they left the train with a few last passengers.

Amy listened, the city was so quiet. She never heard it like this. Everything seemed mysterious, magical. She imagined this was the world Eclipse used to live before he was forced to become her familiar.

They walked all the way to the headquarter as no carriage was roaming the street at this late hour. The clock tower told them it was midnight when they reached the long stair leading to the main cathedral of The Order.

Behind the door they met employees, never stopping to fulfill their jobs. The corridors weren't that full like during a day, but there was enough of them to still call it a bustling area.

"Silver, I'll do the quick report, you both should take a rest," Amy offered, and the psychic nodded.

"Fine be me," he added and walked away, heading to his room.

People like Silver without a home or other S-class agents had their own rooms right in this building. It offered them everything they could need; a place to rest or cook a simple meal. Amy and Eclipse were a similar case, for their uniqueness they were assigned a small flat with two bedrooms so both could have privacy.

The demon didn't want to leave her. Her aura was the only thing keeping him sane. However, he didn't want to raise suspicion, so he left too.

The lass took a deep breath before she reached the big door. No matter how often she saw them, or how much she knew Mr. Nigel was a nice person, she was still nervous. She knocked on them, almost wishing he was already sleeping, but he called her in.

She entered, stating, "Agent Fairy is reporting."

The squirrel man was sitting behind a big table, reading papers with visible bags under his eyes. Amy glanced the room, but Big the Cat was nowhere to be seen. She pushed the urge to look behind her away, concentrating at the matter at hand.

"Welcome back," he said, smiling. "You are here earlier than I expected."

"Yes, we were able to confirm the presence of Black Arms almost immediately."

Nigel stood up to prepare the tea, but Amy stopped him and did it herself. She didn't stop talking about their mission. There was so much to cover, and she didn't want to delay his deserving sleep more than necessary.

His expression kept changing from thinking one to utterly shocked. She couldn't blame him, giving their most important communication method to a demon was unthinkable. Despite her best efforts, her report still took almost an hour.

Mr. Nigel was quiet, and Amy didn't like it. She felt responsible and started to doubt her decisions. She felt so small on the chair she was sitting at.

"So, there is a demon with our the top-secret communication method running free."

A strong pang hit her right in her heart. "It's not Silver's fault, I--"

Nigel stopped her with a hand. "I'm not asking whose fault this is. I'm merely stating this is a very dangerous situation." He leaned back and formed raised steeple over his lap.

Her ears went down, and she felt tears forming in her eyes. She pretended to wipe her forehead of a sweat taking them too.

"I'm not happy. I would say I'm disappointed in you."

The lass shrugged even more.

"This was a careless decision I can't agree with. Your trust toward demons may be a bit too much for my taste."

Amy wished she could mumble some apology, but no amount of words could fix her mistake. She was shortsighted, blinded by her ability to think properly. She never thought about the possibility of Steelar getting attacked by other demons or losing the papers. Or another agent could capture her and discover them.

"However..."

Her ears perked up.

"... having inside information straight from the Hell would be very advantageous for us." He clenched his fingers. "So for now, let's see how it will evolve. There is no point in dwelling over the past."

With those words, he let Amy go. Nigel signed. "Big," he called his silent friend who was standing in the dark corner next to the window, "do you think I make a mistake when I placed too much on this young girl? She may form a friendship with demons, but her inexperience still puts her in a disadvantage. What if another demon gets a hold of those papers?"

His friend remained silent for a short while. "It smells good."

This answer was confusing at first sight, but Nigel knew Big told him there was no need to worry. If it only could work as in the times Nigel was a child.

Big's ears twitched which happened rarely, but the other one didn't notice, his face long from the yawn.

Meanwhile, in the big archives hidden under the library was a moving figure. It's dark fur blended with the shadows. The quiet steps avoided every crack and squeaking plank, proceeding further.

'So far, so good,' Scorch thought when a patrolling duo was getting closer.

She effortlessly jumped, latching on the walls under the ceiling. Her cold eyes scanned the hall as they walked below her. Those guards were well trained, but they were still nowhere near Scorch.

Landing on all fours, she continued down the corridor, finding the door she needed. She took a deep breath, before grasping the knob. The light lightly shone from it, and the magical circle spread from it.

It was a puzzle solved by spinning it with a spiritual aura. Great preciousness was needed to unlock the door without alerting anyone. The next patrol was just behind the corner, heading her way. Their closing steps didn't help her to be calm.

The magic circle stopped, its form subdued into the wood, and she quickly entered, closing the door without making a sound. The soldiers walked past the door once they checked they were closed. Nothing was off, so they left.

Inside the vast room, Scorch was behind the tenth row of bookshelves. Her brows knitted. 'Great, they just had to change the code this morning,' she muttered in her mind.

A smirk appeared on her face. 'It's time to do some cracking.'

Every week the way the records were ordered changed to prevent anybody to steal their information. Unfortunately, Scorch wasn't anybody. If she was, Finitevus would already use her as a ten-rated subject in his experiments.

Solving the code took her about ten minutes as they used a rare variant. After it, it was easy to find what she needed. Her first stop was at S-Rank agents. Their files were spread in numerous bookshelves. It was another way how to protect their information.

Silver's files were only glanced over since she knew them by memory. There was nothing new. She made sure to check others too as they provided valuable subjects.

"Shadow?" she murmured upon his thin report card.

That was unusual. Most of the time the files contained many base information but this one was missing essential information like age, hometown, and such. There was no way The Order would accept somebody with a shady background. The blank page regarding his abilities added to her curiosity.

"Who is he?" she whispered, staring into the black eyes.

Her instinct was telling her there was something off with this person, but nothing indicated what it could be. She knew looking at photograph wouldn't give her any answers, so she let it be for the time being.

She turned her attention to A-class agents where she found two new recruits.

'This one is cute,' ran through her mind when she opened Sonic's folder.

His info was more complete and caught her attention. Speed type agents were rare. Well, maybe he was the first one with such agility. The report about his legs wasn't detailed, but she figured out it had something to do with his bone and muscle structure.

'I bet he has a good vision too. How else he would be able to run without causing himself the headache.'

She was sure The Order knew it too but decided to include this information in a different folder. It wasn't rare for papers meant for one person to be separated into ten folders. It made the search more fun or frustrating depending on her mood.

Her next observing belonged to Amy. She also seemed to be promising and neither she had all aspects recorded. Scorch scratched behind her ear. There was no special ability noted. Did she have only enhanced strength? That was suspicious. There was no doubt The Order was hiding more.

A wide smile appeared on her face. It was time to search for the wider area.

"Boo!"

The sudden voice scared her, her fur bristled and her flames burst for a second. She knew that voice.

"Dr. Finitevus," she muttered through her bared teeth.

The doctor was talking from her red bracelets. A small floating screen appeared above the smooth surface.

"Return," he simply ordered, not hiding his wide smile.

"But I-"

"Forget it! I have a different plan in mind!" he barked, terminating the connection.

Saying she hated her employer would be an understatement. She started to develop an allergy on this fickle man. She let out a deep sight. Her eyes glanced the papers, shrugging her shoulders.

He ordered her to forget it, so she listened. No new info for Mister Wacky. She returned all folders to their respective places and left the room.

Once she was outside, she could rest her body a bit. No matter how well she knew this building, it never was easy to sneak around. She looked around before she left the shadows of the wall around the headquarter.

Nobody noticed their security was breached, and that the intruder left before the first sunlight appeared above the horizon.

In a forest near the Albion City was a figure covered by a cloak. A red tail was laying on the ground next to its clawed feet. There was no doubt it was a demon.

A few steps in front of him was another person It was a hedgehog with five quills of dark gray color around his head. They were pointy without a curve. The green ones growing from the central part were curving down and had a thin gray line on them. The gray fur on his face turned into green one just above his frowning red eyes full of coldness.

A part of one of his big ears seemed to be bitten off, and it twitched as the other figure came closer.

"You know what to do?" asked the demon.

"Don't worry." The hedgehog lifted his hand covered by a long glove with chain binding it. "I'll kill Silver!" His fingers formed a fist. "I'll have my revenge, and he won't get in your way."

"Good," the demon agreed, adjusting his pince-nez glasses. "But don't underestimate him."

"I won't!" he barked back, his head jerking toward the figure. "He will pay for his sins! I'll smash him like a bug!"

The demon watched the young hedgehog before he asked, "How you plan to lure him out of the city?"

"What?" The hedgehog's body lost its tension, and his eyes widened in surprise.

A long sight escaped demon's throat.

"I-I'll figure it out!" the hedgehog snapped in frustration.

"I'll do it."

"No!" The hedgehog moved in front of him. "You gave me the second chance to live! I'll do anything to repay you!"

The demon shook his head. "No, you are too hotheaded, Glitch."

The hedgehog's eyes wandered off his master. This name, he still wasn't used to it, but it was his new reality. His old name was buried with his past. There was no reason to dwell upon it. There was only revenge for him to fulfill.

"But I can still-"

His words were stopped with a flick against his forehead.

"You can go to that place to wait for him. I'll lure him out."

Glitch rubbed his forehead before bowing. "Yes, Master, I won't fail you." With those words, he left.

The demon remained still for a brief moment, watching the first sun to appear beyond the city walls. A gentle breeze touched his hood, and he lifted his head to face it.

"My dear half," Sirius silently muttered, "you aren't the only one who can shape the future they way they see fit." He slowly moved forward. "Let's see how you will fulfill your vision with his death."
