Priest Shadow was living peacefully until one night horrible secret about his body was revealed during a confrontation with a demon named Eclipse. Shadow was a demon, and his power and real form were sealed by a cross he was wearing around his neck. Once he calmed down a bit, he tried to run away, searching for a solution or complete solitude, cutting himself from the outer world.

His plans were ruined by Sonic, a boy he cared for when he followed him into the departing train. The boy witnessed Shadow's real form but decided to follow him nevertheless. Thus they started to travel together, not knowing there was a duo of agents on their trail.

Those two were Silver and Gold sent by The Order to investigate what happened, concluding Shadow was a traitor of The Order. Their search led them to Rosemary City where Shadow and Sonic were staying. There they met Amy Rose, tomboyish daughter of Rose Family, who got shortly after that kidnapped and rescued by Shadow and Sonic, to end up almost dead when Eclipse, who was miraculously alive and kicking, picked her as his newest meal.

It was again the hedgehog duo saving her, and this time Shadow was resolved to finish the fiend, however, priest's demonic instincts got in the way, making him lose Eclipse in the city. Like that wasn't enough, he had met with Silver, who was eager to put him behind bars. The confrontation caused injuries to both, driving them apart and putting a new light on the case, dragging more shadows of the bigger mystery out.

And it wasn't just Shadow crossing his path with Silver, as the psychic had met Eclipse and his sister Crestia, taking the latter as a captive. After it, all went fast, starting with Sonic, Shadow, and Amy discovering wounded Eclipse, taking a pity and making sure the small demon wouldn't die.

In the next hours, Amy discovered her supernatural talent, Shadow got almost killed by Silver, Sonic was shocked to discover the real fate of his parents, Amy shouted her lungs out, and the situation turned into one big mess that led to a lot of explanation, hidden past, a big pain, and ultimately finding a new path in the life.

Since then their paths divided to be connected once more after three years.
