Chapter 16
Layla's POV
I sat back and watched as my mother struggled in Johnson's arms.
Without thought, I took the gun out of my belt and aimed it at Johnson.
"Let her go, or I shoot." I bellowed, pressing the cold metal to his head.
He winked at my threat to him.
I smiled happily, and pulled the trigger.
Click, click.
I kept on pulling the trigger but no bullets came out, nor sound.
He snatched the gun out of my grasp with his free hand.
He chuckled lightly. "You see, I know you would find me out sooner or later, you nosy bastard." He spat.
I rolled my eyes as he continued. "I already have everything prepared. Don't you forget Layla, I'm the coldest one in the game." He bragged.
I sighed weakly while tears streamed down my cheeks. "What do you want from me huh?! What?"
He patted my head, and I flinched at his touch. "I want you and your mother to come with me."
"The devil is a lie." Michael smartly said, under his breath.
"Excuse me?" He questioned, walking towards Michael.
My mom was still in his grasp. Her hands were on the sides of her thighs and her face was loosing color.
I had to think, quick.
I looked over at Michael who was sarcastically looking at his nails.
"You heard me, fool. Get your punk ass out my face." Michael boldly said.
I gasped at his choice of words. He doesn't usually cuss like that.
Johnson charged at Michael but I quickly stepped in front of him.
I breathed heavily, trying to guard Michaels being but he pushed me to the side.
"Do you get joy out of this, why don't you do us all a favor and lea-" Michael was cut off by a right hook delivered from Johnson. Blood spooled from his mouth, as he hit the floor. He caressed his jaw, and looked at me. Something in his eyes lit an angry ignition in my heart.
No one fucks with my best friend. No one.
I looked over at Johnson. Without a second thought, I kicked him in his jaw.
My mom clasped her jaws on his arm and tore his flesh off his bones.
He let out an agonizing scream and relinquished my mother. The crimson liquid spooled from his arm. I watched as the blood seeped through the crevasses of his fingers.
He let go of his arm and faced my mom.
"Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Nancy," He singsonged. "You shouldn't have done that.
He pulled a gun out the back of his pants.
I could've sworn I took it.
"Bye Nancy." He cocked his gun.
I jumped in front of my mom as the shot went off. The bullet penetrated my stomach. I began to clutch my abdomen as blood spooled out of my wound. I winced in pain as I watched my body empty slowly.
All I could hear is the agonizing screams escaping my mother's lips, and Michaels sobs.
I looked up at Johnson, who was smiling at me.
"Bye niece!" He waved before fleeing the scene.
"Michael, Michael!" My mom called.
Michael looked confused as to how she knew his name. He still had his disguise on.
"No time for that! Call an ambulance!" She ordered.
Michael did as he was told and called the paramedics.
"Hello, 911?! My friend, she's not breathing. She's been shot in her stomach!" I heard Michael say.
My mom looked down at me crying, holding my bloody hands.
I coughed viciously as I tried to fight for my life. However, something told me that my time was up.
I looked over at Michael, as he set the phone down. He nervously bit his nails and paced back and fourth.
I held my mom's hand, and reckoned Michael to come closer to me. "Hey, mom," I started, holding her hands. "I can't fight any longer, I'm tired." I began to cough harder.
"No! No!! You're not leaving me!" She sobbed, tears decorating her face.
"Make sure you take care of yourself, I want the best for you. Have another child. And I'll be watching you." I told her, smiling weakly.
She began to cry hysterically.
I used my strength to turn to Michael. "Michael, you are the most awesome person I know! I love you to pieces man. In a short time, you made my life worth living." I honestly said.
"Layla, you sound ridiculous! You're not going to die, I won't let you! Your my best friend!" He yelled sobbing.
"Damn it Michael, I'm dying!! I'm sorry. I'll have. seat for you in heaven. Now please, Let me go to sleep. Let me go to sleep. Let me go." I whispered before my eyes got cloudy.
My eyelids became heavier, and my breaths became short. Right before my eyes closed, I watched the scene unfold before my eyes.
The last thing I'll ever see.
Bill barged in with the paramedics. I turned my head but all the pictures dragged slowly. With each movement I took, the oxygen started to lessen. The paramedics injected an IV in my arm.
"Who did this to you ma'am?" Was the last thing I heard before blackness took over my sight.
Michael's POV
I watched as Layla took her last breath. Her eyes were still open.
"She's not breathing!" I heard the paramedic say.
I looked over at the other paramedic who is talking in his walkie talkie. "Code blue, code blue, we have an adult female who stopped breathing. I'm going to need a gurney, as soon as possible."
"Rodger that, sir." The man said back.
I watched the scene unfold. I walked over to Layla's mom and began to hug her. With open arms she hugged me back. We cried in each other's arms as the paramedics tried to revive her.
The revivers picked up the shock paddles and rubbed them together to create static.
The electric currents brightened up as they met Layla's lifeless body.
She jolted from the current and laid back down.
"Give me 700 cc." The doctor said, rubbing the paddles together. "Clear!"
Her body connected with the paddles and she laid back down. I looked over at her heart monitor and she had a steady pulse.
Happiness coursed through my veins as I watched Layla fight for her life.
"We have a steady heart beat! Get her on the journey and give her 5mg of propofol. Ted, give her some Oxycodone to stop the pain! C'mon guys get moving!" The doctor clapped, instructing them.
I watched as they lifted Layla of the ground and placed her on the gurney. They placed a tube down her throat and an oxygen mask quickly followed.
As they carried her away, I collapsed in the floor. My breathing got shallow, and I found myself chocking for air.
Nancy looked over at me. "Michael? Michael?! Paramedics?!" She yelled.
One of them came in, clearly confused.
I was grasping my neck, begging myself to breathe, but to my avail I couldn't.
I having a panic attack.
Nancy fell to the floor and clasped her face with her hands.
"Why are all the good people sick?" She asked herself.
I looked back over to the paramedic who put an oxygen mask over my face.
"Sir, I'm going to need you to breathe." He instructed me.
Don't you think I would if I could?
The oxygen to my brain began to lessen. My vision got blurry before I completely passed out.
Nancy POV
What the hell is going on today? I sighed as I watched Michael pass out. More paramedics came in to give him the attention her needed. I immediately got a searing headache as I watched the paramedics attend to Michael. I massaged my temples in hopes my headache will go down. Eventually, I got sick of watching Michael struggle and got up.
I can take this anymore.
I fleed from this chaotic scene and walked to Michaels door.
I saw his other guard reading a newspaper. I looked him to grasp his attention. "Hey, hey? Michael passed out, he been overwhelmed. The meds are taking care of him." I sighed.
The guard dropped his newspaper and stood up.
He scrutinized me clearly confused who I was.
"I'm Michaels neighbor. And the mother of the girl he's freaking out for."
He sighed in relief and extended his arm for me to shake which I gladly accepted.
"Thank you so much Ms.?" He asked waiting for my name.
"Nancy, my name is Nancy." I told him.
"Thank you Ms. Nancy, I'm Victor, but everyone calls me Vic." He greeted.
"Nice to meet you. I know this may be a burden to ask but, can you give me a lift to the hospital where my daughter is? They're going to transport Michael there as well." I explained.
"Of course, let's go."
Michaels POV
I opened my eyes slowly, blinking a few times. When I fully opened them, I was greeted by these bright white lights. I rubbed the crust forming on my eyes and squinted for a second.
These lights were very illuminating.
I looked to my left to see an IV pump, and my heart monitor. I scanned the setting I was in only to find a big window. The outside had a parking lot, and some bright green bushes.
Was I hospitalized?
To my left, I'm guessing the doctors where having a conversation. It quickly stopped when I cleared my throat.
They glued their eyes to me and gave me their attention.
"Sir are you alright?" The male doctor asked me.
"Yes sir I'm fine. Can you please explain to me what happened?"
"Sir, I'm afraid you went into shock. Your vital organs were starting to shut down." The doctor explained.
What?
"Sir, I thought I was having a panic attack." I scratched my head, clearly confused at his explanation.
"Your theory is true, however, the reason why you passed out is a much bigger reason." He told me.
"Okay, well why did I pass out? A panic attack doesn't make your organs shut down." I retorted.
"Sir, I'm sorry to inform you, but Mr. Jackson, you were medically poisoned."
I bucked my eyes at his reasoning. My heart monitor began to beep frantically as I panicked.
The doctor noticed and rushed to my side. "Sir, I'm going to need you to calm down." He explained.
I took in some deep breaths, and exhaled lightly.
Once my heartbeat regulated, my doctor explained more medical information. "We put an Antipoison component in your IV drip."
I sighed in annoyance. "Okay, anything else."
The doctor paused before speaking. "Oh yes! I for this envelope, your cousin sent it to you." He said while pulling envelope from his back pocket.
I nodded and smiled at him. "Thanks doc."
"No problem, if you need anything, just click the nurse button." He instructed.
I nodded again and watched him exit. Once be closed the door I examined the envelope.
It was a bright orange envelope that had a small smiley face in the middle.
"No name?" I asked myself.
I ripped open the letter and began to read it.
Hey smart ass, hows your jaw? Well we weren't going to going to ruin your life. But since you wanted to open your pretty little mouth, your life will become turmoil. I wouldn't shut my eyes if I were you, you might not wake up.
Bye!
P.S: We're always watching.
Fuck.
