Chapter 10
Sorry I waited weeks to update. I was very busy with school and staar, only some people will understand how annoying Gogol is. Anywho, I might turn this into a fan fiction later but I'm not sure. Enjoy.
Layla POV
I scrutinized my surroundings, the world seemed quieter. The tall trees made the neighborhood look more dark. However the sun was the most salient. Maria needed to be put to rest, someone will find her. My mother broke my thoughts by revving the golf kart. It was all we had.
I looked at her intently, and she gave me a reassuring smile. I got inside the car and observed the scenery as we made our way to the airport. The strong winds blew my hair out of disproportion and the breeze tickled my ears. My mind still felt blurred. I shot Maria, and she liked Damien too? She was the most obscene, philistine, diluted, incoherent person I've ever met in my life.
Finally the car came to a stop and we were at a real airport. My mother swerved behind the vast building parking lot; leaving our golf kart.
Unloading our luggage, we slowly walked around and opened the large glass doors. Immediately, we were blinded by the bright lights from the airports ceilings. They radiated and bounced of the walls and the shiny tile floors. We've never seen anything like it.
"Layla baby," she said gasping, covering her mouth. "I've never seen anything like it."
"Me neither." I said, just as surprised as she was.
Gazing around we saw people scurrying past each other desperately trying to board their flights. All different types of ethnicities and cultures flooded the airport. I loved the versatility and diversity.
I waved my head, searching for a place to purchase our tickets. My eyes bulged slightly at the sight of the ticket booth.
At least that's what I think we call it. I looked over to her. Her mouth was still open. We were poor folks, it's completely amazing what rich people can do.
"Mom, close your mouth before a fly flies in." I said laughing, while trying to close her mouth.
She looked at me, slightly embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I'm just, it's... Wow." She said stumbling over her words.
I giggled and grabbed her arm. "Cmon lets go buy some tickets." I said directing her towards the booth.
Once we arrived we walked straight to the front to get to the lady. I looked around and people had angry expressions on their face. A large man started to intensely scrutinize us, but I ignored it.
"Hello ma'am," I started. "I would like to purchase two adult tickets to San Die-" I was cut off by a man grabbing my arm.
My instant reaction was to grab his arm and start twisting it. He started to scream in pain, I turned around to see a big buff man wearing an angry face. His jacket said security. I thought it was fake, however he was a real security guard.
"Ma'am," he started. "I'm going to need you to go to the back of the line." He said calmly; restricting himself from confronting me about his arm.
"What's that?" My mother and I said in unison.
"A PLACE YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO GO A LONG ASS TIME AGO!" An angry customer said.
I looked him up and down, he was absolutely hideous.
Pfft, I should snap his neck for looking like that. I turned back around to face the security guard.
"Could you escort us there, we never been to an airport." I said calmly.
I looked at my mother quickly, she looked annoyed. I guess she thought something else was going to happen and honestly, I did too.
"Please." My mother begged, flashing her white smile.
The security melted under her gaze. He nodded, and led us to the back of the "line". Whatever that is. We walked up when everyone else did. To tell you the truth, this ticket booth was excruciatingly long and me and my mother were tired.
I sat on the floor playing with my nails; picking at them. They surely were more interesting. My mother was just sitting down on the floor shutting her eyes. Two hours have passed and I grew more exasperated. I began to mutter to myself angrily. I ranted on while crossing my arms. I huffed and rolled my eyes to make my attitude more evident. I got a few stares but I didn't care.
My mother was in complete oblivion. She had no clue that I was secretly ranting to myself. I was saying obscenities to myself and complaining repeatedly until an unfamiliar voice caught my attention.
"Next." The female voice said.
I looked up from my nails and the line was completely gone. I moved up and walked to the counter with a smile. My mother dragged my luggage and tagged along.
I sighed happily at the sight of finally being in the front.
"Hello miss, how are you." I said, cheesing hard.
My mom stayed back smiling watching the whole process synchronize.
"I'm doing well, " she said smiling back. "Where to?" She asked politely.
"Well, I would like 2 adult tickets to San Diego California." I told her.
"Okay, it's 6:56pm at the moment, we have a flight for-" she said pausing.
I looked at her in confusion. "When? I want the soonest flight there." I said getting kinda annoyed.
The booth lady finally spoke up. "The next flight is at 7:14pm then there are no more flights till next week." She said; disappointed.
My mother walked up to the counter with a "oh my god" expression on her face. " You're acting like we can't make it! How much?" She asked.
"450 shillings." She told us.
I hurriedly picked up my luggage and slammed it on the counter, causing my mother and the lady to flinch. Both women watched me intently as I opened the suit case.
Before I grabbed the money, I glanced at the clock. It read 6:59pm. Shit.
I ripped my eyes off the clock and focused on getting the money to the lady. I gave her 460 shillings, but I had no time to collect change. She weighed our luggage and directed us towards the medal detectors. Before leaving she screamed something.
"Bon Voyage!" She said.
I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around. My mother did the same.
"What does that mean?" I said squinting my eyes in confusion.
She smiled. "It means have a good trip."
I smiled at her and waved good bye. My mother thanked her and we were on our way. We made our way to the medal detectors.
I read the sign by the large medal detector and it said "please take off your shoes, and place all metal items and belongings in the grey bin, thank you." It read.
I obeyed the regulations and grabbed two bins for me and my mother. I handed my mother a grey bin and continued to take off my shoes. I quickly glanced at my mother and she stood there confused.
"Mom," I started with panic covering my voice, "If you want to go to America, you need to take off your shoes and place them in that grey bin."
She raised her eyebrows and protested. "Why would I want to do that?"
"So the medal detectors don't go off!" I yelled, growing angrier. "There is a big sign right there."
She nodded hesitantly and proceeded to take off her shoes. We walked through the medal detectors and got waved. We then grabbed our stuff from the grey bins and proceeded to our terminal.
I looked at my paper and we were terminal 502. I was just about to explain to my mom were our terminal is before I heard something above me, perhaps a loud speaker?
Terminal 502 will be departing in 3 minutes. Terminal 502.
My eyes bulged as I listened to true loud speaker utter our terminal out of the speaker. I looked at the clock and it read 7:11.
Damn it.
I looked at my mother and quickly explained the situation with her. She nodded in return. Me and my mother dragged the luggage frantically; scuffing the fresh waxed tile floors. We ran down each terminal.
I looked to my left reading each number.
Terminal 493
Terminal 495
Terminal 500
I stopped reading as I heard the loud speaker.
Terminal 502 will be leaving in 45 seconds, 45. I repeat terminal 502 is ready for departure.
I looked up and spotted our terminal. I ran quickly pushing everyone out of my way all while holding my mothers hands. I was counting in my head at the same time.
10,9,8,7.
Terminal 501
6,5,4,3,2.
Terminal 502!
I wasted no time running towards the woman handing my ticket to her as my mother did the same. I startled her with my movements but I currently didn't care. I made it! With 1 second to spare.
I walked down this hallway tunnel looking thing, breathing heavy from the adrenaline and the running. What a first experience huh?
"Wow Layla," my mother said breathlessly. "We made it."
I looked at her and smiled. I walked in the airplane and was greeted by a tall white man. When I walked in, the cool air covered my skin making the hairs on my arms go up. It was quite refreshing.
"Baby, we have to look for 743." My mother told me, while looking down at her ticket.
I nodded at her and began to look. I looked at all the numbers in hopes of finding my seat but I came up short. I felt someone tap my shoulder but I didn't twist it, because of today's incident at the ticket booth. I turned slowly and was faced with some lady wearing a short black skirt, a red button up, an ugly tie, and black 1 1/2 inch heels.
"Ma'am you need to sit down, the plane will be moving soon." She informed me.
"Okay I will," I told her.
She was smiling too hard. Anyways, I went all the way to the front of the plane. It looked way nicer. Nice couches, nice T.Vs. I wonder why the back wasn't like that. I tore my gaze from the furnished area to look for my number.
"Aha," I said pointing. "There it is."
Me and my mother put our luggage on the over head and sat down sighing.
I turned my head to her smiling. "What do you think America is going to be like." I asked, rubbing her hand.
"Obese." She said plainly
I looked at her blankly then busted into a fit of laughter.
"Oh my goodness," I said through my laughter. "Why would you say that."
She giggled. "Have you seen those magazines?! They eat all types of greasy foods." She said laughing. "They'll fry anything."
"True." I said snorting.
I was about to speak again until I was interrupted by a loud speaker.
Attention all passengers, this flight is from Nairobi Kenya, to San Diego California which is a long flight. You may feel jet lagged but that is normal. At this time you may not leave the plane. Please fasten your seat belts before exit for departure to San Diego California. If you have any questions, please ask the flight attendant. Please do not knock at any point of time at the pilots door. All questions should be directed to the flight attendants only. Please enjoy your flight. Thank you for riding with KLM.
The loudspeaker stopped and another voice began.
"Hello passengers, I am your flight attendant, Sadie. If you need any help I will be right here. If you look above you, we have air masks for you incase of emergencies. Below you are blow up boats and a parachute if any casualties happen. " she said giggling.
My stomach dropped at the thought of crashing. My hands tensed, and a rush of horror pulsed through my veins. I began to sweat profusely and my legs began to tremble. My mom squeezed my hand in comfort. I looked over to her and smiled weakly. I love how she always knows what I'm feeling.
"If you are hungry, want something to drink, having technical issues, or anything else, there is a red button above you. We will help you immediately. We also have other flight attendants on board as well. Safe flight.
Me and my mother sat in peaceful silence. This was interrupted by the plane flooring it down the run way. The plane began the jiggle, and I just watched out the window.
When the plane hit just the right amount of speed, the wheels went in some compartment and the plane proceeded in the air. I've never seen anything like it. We were going into high altitude and something didn't feel right. My ears began to pop, it was the strangest sensation. My mother sucked in the air through her teeth and stuck her fingers in her ears.
I pressed on the flight attendant button vigorously until Sadie came.
"What seems to be the problem." She asked concerned.
"My ears are popping, and so are my mothers." I managed to say though my pain.
This really hurts.
"Oh!" She said in realization. She reached into her horrid fanny pack and took out a small package that contained neon yellow plastic. She placed them in my hands and smiled.
"What is this?" I said looking at the two packets.
"They are ear plugs. You stuff them in your ears so they don't hurt when you're in high altitude, like now." She explained.
I nodded in understanding and handed a pack to my mother. The lady proceeded to leave. I opened the pack and recklessly stuck the plug so far in my ears.
The pain stopped.
I looked over to my mother to see her calming down as well. I looked ahead and smiled.
We are finally in the altitude we need to be. You may take off your seat belts. Sorry for the inconvenience you may have experienced. Have a happy flight.
I closed my eyes and tuned out the man on the speaker. I was extremely exhausted by the events that happened today. I looked over to my mother to see her already sleeping. I smiled at some of the memories we had today. Good and bad. I smiled and chuckled lightly before I sleep took over me.
