Chapter Fifteen - Alternate History
"...gin!" said Jones, finishing his insistent declaration of virility. Of course, it was at that point that he realised, along with Smith, Kris and H'ver, that they had left the CandlePunk portion of the loop behind them and were currently in... Well, to be perfectly frank he had no idea whereabouts they were.
"Touched for the very first time," Kris muttered under her breath. She was quite disappointed to find that wherever the loop had taken them she no longer had her totally awesome tank. She was going to miss that.
"Where the devil do you suppose we are?" said Smith. "And what's that smell?"
"It smells rather hot, whatever it is," said Jones.
"We're in..." Kris cut her sentence short and let out a long, deep sigh. "H'ver, be a dear and clarify the year for me would you?"
"According to my sensors, which do appear to be playing silly buggers I hasten to add, it is the year two-thousand fifteen."
"Two-thousand fifteen?" Jones queried. "If that's the case then where on Earth is everyone?"
"We're in the Alternate History portion of the loop," Kris replied. "That's the only explanation and if I had to guess, judging by the three volcanoes that are erupting simultaneously," she paused whilst pointing in three separate directions towards three different volcanoes that were, indeed, in the process of erupting, "and the fact that there is no sign of life anywhere, 'least none so far as I can see, I'd say we're definitely in the Alternate History part of the loop."
"So this would be what? A history where mankind never evolved?"
"Not just mankind," she replied. "But all life, in this version of history, failed to evolve."
"Well that's just..." Smith's words were cut short by the appearance of an incredibly bright light. It was not the same light to which they had all grown accustomed though. This time it was an all encompassing purple.
When it subsided, the four inter-sub-genre travellers were in exactly the same position as they had been only rather than being surrounded by erupting volcanoes they appeared to be in the middle of what looked very much like a football pitch.
"We're still in two-thousand fifteen," said H'ver, his mechanical voice raised high over the raucous shouts and yells from all quarters. "And I think it's fair to say that this version of history most definitely includes the evolution of life."
"Well then that must mean this history is the right history, surely?" Jones asked.
"Don't be so sure," Kris replied, glancing up and to her right. "I mean, I might be wrong but I certainly don't remember there ever being a Swastika flying at Wembley Stadium."
"A Swastika?" asked Smith. "What an Earth is that?"
"The Nazi flag," she replied. "That must mean that in this version of history, Germany won the Second World War."
"I didn't even know there was a First World War..."
"After your time," she replied with a shrug. "I suspect your children will have will be going to fight on the front lines though."
"Will have will be going to?"
"Yes, that's exactly what I said," Kris replied with a raised eyebrow as yet again, the all-encompassing purple light took hold.
Moments later - of course it could have just as easily been seconds or minutes, or even hours - once that light dissipated, they once again found themselves standing in exactly the same positions that they had been pre-purple, only this time there were no erupting volcanoes and no Soccer loving Nazis.
Instead...
"What do you think you're doing?" an enormous man asked. Not only was he enormous but he was also very naked and very black. And he was sitting astride a Velociraptor. And he had a very big gun. And, because some things are worth repeating, he was sitting astride a Velociraptor. "This is the King's land, and you people are trespassing."
"We're definitely still in two-thousand fifteen," H'ver muttered, at least he muttered as best an android can.
"I can't even hazard a guess as to the history that took place to produce this particular version of two-thousand fifteen," said Kris, shrugging helplessly.
The 'Raptor barked a bark that sounded the exact opposite as it would have done if it was, say, an Irish Setter.
"You," the very naked very black Velociraptor riding man said, pointing towards Kris. "The King will like you, he likes them pale. As for the rest of you, trespassing on the King's land has only one punishment..."
"Well you'd better be quick, dear chap," said Jones, breathing a sigh of relief as the much more familiar white light began to take hold. "Oh look at that, I'm afraid we're going to have to get going... Places to go, people to see... You understand, I'm sure..."
