Ssundee- Chapter 19: Betrayal
We trekked across the mountain ranges, goosebumps prickling on my skin as we got closer to the cave. Derp started shivering; I moved closer to him, trying to comfort him. His crooked eyes were open wide and his shoulders were quivering. I didn't understand why he was so scared. I was a bit freaked out too, but Derp looked like he was gonna have a fit. Diamond had noticed too, she walked over to me, leaning close to whisper in my ear. "He looks terrified. Is he ok?" My heart sped up in her proximity. "I-I-I don't know..." We fell silent as a dark shadow fell over us. I craned my neck upwards and saw a huge mountain towering over us. Well...nearly all of us fell silent. "OHMYGODTHESEMOUNTAINSAREFRIGGIN'HUGESSUNDEE! WHATSWRONGWITHYOURDERPYFRIEND? OHWELL, WHEREAREALLTHESQUIDS, SHOULDIBEQUIET-" I slapped him round the face. "Yes you SHOULD be quiet! Idiot." I hissed. He bit his lip and fell back behind, keeping silent. I shook my head. "I wish we'd left him in the jungle." Derp smiled slightly. I moved closer to him. "Dood, what's up?" "It's just...don't worry..." I furrowed my eyebrows, but didn't question him further. I had a feeling that he was on edge for a reason. Not much could scare Derp. We kept close together as we neared the cliff-face. I nodded silently as I recognised the cave above us and braced my legs, leaping up a few chunks before digging around in my pockets and fishing out an iron pick. The others followed suite. We carried on hiking up the cliff until Derp, who had overtaken me, stopped suddenly. I caught up with him and hung onto the rock, checking on him. His wide eyes were staring upwards in fear as scuffling noises issued from overhead. I heard hushed voices and murmurs from above. Then silence. "Derp?" He turned to me. I started. I'd never seen him look so petrified. "They're gonna do it Ssundee...they're gonna-" He was cut off by a loud, bloodcurdling scream from above us. I'd recognise that scream anywhere. It wasn't exactly hard to forget. It was Sky's...
"NO!" Derp and I launched ourselves over the top of the cliff; my heart pounding in my chest as I took in the sight before me. All of SkyArmy were pinned down on the floor my numerous squids, unconscious. Sky was lying on the stone floor in front of us, groaning as thick crimson liquid streamed down his arm. My eyes widened as I realised who was standing above him, staring in horror and shock at the bloodied knife in his hand. It was Seto. Time seemed to slow down as I realised Derp had stopped shivering. I saw him clench his fists and his crooked eyes narrow. My heart clenched. I knew from experience that Derp often attacked without thinking. I threw myself at him just as he snarled and leapt forward. "No Derp! Don't do it!" We hit the ground just as Diamond and Lancey sprang over the top of us and took Seto down. I was glad that I'd managed to stop Derp in time. He didn't know what he was doing. I watched as his crooked eyes slowly cleared and he stared at me. "Oh...sorry." "S'k." I twisted my neck round to see Seto. I had to bite my lip to stop myself from crying. He lay on the cold stone, watching the bloody knife slowly slip through his fingers. It fell with a clatter to the ground. His brown eyes, normally so full and happy with life, were now shattered and desolate. All I could think was: Why? Why would he do it? Sky was his friend...I clambered to my feet. "Derp, why were you so freaked out earlier?" He wouldn't meet my eyes. "I knew they were gonna make Seto do it. HE was." I instantly knew who 'HE' was. "Herobrine did this?" "He must've possessed Seto." I gasped in shock. "You knew, huh?" "I knew something bad was gonna happen...just not WHAT exactly..." I don't know why, but I gave him a hug. "What was that for?" "For being there when I needed you." I saw his crooked eyes cloud over with emotion as I smiled, before helping Seto to his feet. He stumbled forwards; I caught him just in time. "I-I-I swear Ssundee...I never meant to-" "I know Seto, I know." I said gently. Then Derp took his arm and led him away as Sky staggered to his feet, blood congealing on his arm.
"Ssundee...move." I'd stood directly in front of Seto on purpose. I took a deep breath and stood my ground. "No." "That's not an option." "I'm not moving. I'm not letting you hurt him." "He tried to kill me!" "He was possessed by Herobrine!" As Sky's face was twisted in pain and anger, I remembered something Derp had said. 'Ssundee...there's something about him...I don't think we should trust him.' "Sky...calm down, this is all a misunderstanding-" "SSUNDEE! IF YOU DO NOT MOVE RIGHT NOW I WILL HAVE TO-" "DON'T TOUCH HIM!" I jumped as Derp's hoarse and strangled tones grated on my eardrums as he yelled back at Sky. He gritted his teeth. "You know what Ssundee. Like I said before. After you morphed I made it a point not to trust Derp. And now, come to think of it, I also made it my point not to trust YOU either. I knew you'd betray us." I gasped in shock. "But I thought-" "Yeah well. You thought WRONG." Then I felt something hard hit me in the stomach and I fell. "You HIT HIM!" "No Derp, please-" Sky stepped over me, clutching his arm. I saw Seto cringe as Derp stood in front of him protectively. My stomach clenched in fear as I noticed Derp seemed dangerously calm. "Sky. If I were you, I'd step away." "He. Tried. To. Kill. Me." "No wonder if this is how you act on a regular basis." I winced, knowing Derp had gone too far. Sky drew his sword with his uninjured arm. "SHUT UP YOU WORTHLESS DERP!" Derp's crooked eyes narrowed in anger and clouded over in rage. "No-one, and I mean NO-ONE, CALLS ME A WORTHLESS DERP!" I shut my eyes as the sounds of battle echoed around me. I heard the squids scatter as the other members of SkyArmy joined in the battle. I staggered to my feet as my eyes snapped open just in time to see Derp pick a budder sword off of the floor. It was covered in blood. "Derp...What. Did. You. Do?!" He turned to me, his eyes full of fear and the desperate light of battle. "Help..." It was then that I saw the gushing wound in his side. My eyes widened and I ran through the turmoil to him; catching him just before he fell. His crooked eyes rolled back into his head and I knew that only one could save him now.
"SETO!" I picked him up bridal-style and ran back the way I'd come, nearly colliding with him on the way. The healer took one look at Derp and grabbed my arm, leading me into a small crevice in the side of the cave. As he healed Derp I saw flashes of the battle in front of me. There was Lancey, fighting off Jerome and Mitch, while Diamond took out a dozen squids with each stride. Then I saw Sky, my heart beat faster as he spotted us as the edge of the cave. I couldn't see his eyes behind his sunglasses but I had a feeling they were glimmering with anger and hate. He began to stalk towards us, killing squids left, right and centre; never taking his eyes off the prize...us. "SETO!" I yelled the sorcerer's name for the second time in as many minutes. His head snapped up. The gash in Derp's side was nearly healed. "Oh my god..." Seto withdrew his hands just in time as Sky threw his sword. It landed an inch away from where his hands had been less than 2 seconds ago. I thought I should feel angry, but all I really felt was fear. "I'll hold him off. You get the hell outta here." "You're so brave Ssundee. I wish we could've stayed friends for longer. But we're in a war, and I have to fight my own battles." He smiled sadly, before standing up to face Sky. My heart beat faster and faster in terror as Sky raised his sword; purple fireballs blossomed in Seto's palms. Suddenly I heard a strangled cough from the ground. I looked down and saw Derp regaining consciousness. "Not Sky." He managed to choke out. "What?" "N-not S-Sky." With a jolt I understood what he meant. "Crap." I got to my feet and ran at Sky. "GET OUT OF THE WAY SETO!" "SSUNDEE, I SAID I CAN FIGHT MY OWN-" I cut him off as I pushed him out of the way, ploughing into 'Sky', sending us both sprawling out on the ground. I was suddenly aware that the battle was slowly evaporating; most of the squids were now dead or dying. I ripped Sky's sunglasses off. No one had ever seen beneath them. I took a sharp intake of breath as a pair of white, glowing eyes glared at me. "Petty mortal. You couldn't of stayed out of the way, you HAD to intervene, DIDN'T YOU!" Then he seemed to recognise me. "Why, it's you. SSaturdee, isn't it?" (Lol, am I the only one who finds this ironic?) I snarled. "SSUNDEE. Actually." He laughed, a cold evil sound. "You Minecraftians are soooo easy to agrivate!" I couldn't help it. I slapped him round the face. His cool, collective demeanour vanished in an instant. "You'll regret that MORTAL!" I cried out as I felt a searing pain in my eyes. When I opened them, he was gone. Sky was staring at me with a mixture of horror and admiration on his face. "You just slapped HEROBRINE in the FACE?" "Yup. He deserved it." Sky smirked. "Yeah well, next time you might wanna use your sword." It was then that I saw his eyes. They were gold, with slit eye pupils like a cats' and flecks of blue in the iris'. I blinked. "Wow." He blushed, quickly jamming his sunglasses on his nose. I looked away, embarrassed. I knew how it felt to have people stare at your eyes. I helped him to his feet and turned. Derp was resting against the cave wall, staring at something. Or someone. I ran over to him. By this time everyone else had stopped fighting and were crowding round Sky, asking questions.
Only Derp and I stood by the cave's mouth, watching a familiar figure in a purple cape fade into the distance. "He said he didn't belong in SkyArmy. He apologised for not saying goodbye to you. He thought it would be too hard." I blinked tears away. "I'm gonna miss him." Derp nodded solemnly. "I will too. He was a good friend to you. To us." I bit my lip to try and stop the tears. But it was too late. Derp wrapped me in his arms as I sobbed into him, wishing Seto hadn't left. Wishing it had never ended in betrayal. I heard Derp growl as someone approached. "I'm so sorry Derp...and Ssundee. I had no idea what I was saying." I knew it was Sky. I felt Derp nod in acknowledgment, then Sky walked away. "Ssundee." I heard Diamond's soft voice as she brushed against me. "S-Seto's g-gone." I managed to choke out between sobs. "Oh my god...I'm so sorry..." We stood in silence as the other members of SkyArmy conversed in hushed tones about what had happened. I stiffened slightly as Derp snarled. "I swear, if I EVER find Herobrine, he's gonna pay." I nodded. "We'll avenge S-Seto." "I'll do my best." That was Diamond. "I didn't know him very well, but he didn't deserve this." Derp nodded. "H-he was a good friend..." I slowly drew away from Derp, staring into his crooked eyes; full of concern and worry for me. For all of us. "What are we going to do now?" I grinned. "We're gonna go get Lancey, and then we're gonna go kick Herobrine's ass."
