Chapter 14

Rida was considerably in a better mood the next morning. She hummed as she put the kettle on the stove for the preparation of tea. She started the prep for cheese omelette as Jibran was doing Keto for the past month, and she was always careful in the preparation of his meals. She was about to whisk the eggs when she heard something.

"Bahoo, knead the flour quickly. I want to make Aloo Parathe* for my darling son". Mrs. Qadir ordered as she entered the kitchen.

"But, Ami... Jibran is following Keto", Rida tried to explain to her mother in law.

"What's that? Are you trying to restrict me from making food for my own son?"

Mrs. Qadir almost shouted as she glared at her daughter in law.

"No... No Ami, how can I... I was just..." but before Rida could complete her sentence, Mrs. Qadir started opening all the cabinet doors in the pantry and mumbled in a fierce tone,

"If you don't want to knead it, I will knead the dough myself. Can't believe these daughter-in-laws of today, they don't have any regard for their elders at all."

Rida was dejected but she took out the mixer to help knead the floor.

"Here Ami, I will prepare the dough ASAP!" she said as she took flour in the container but she nearly dropped it as her M. I.L shrieked.

"What on Earth are you doing? Knead it the traditional way."

The so called "traditional"way required Rida to squat down on the floor and knead the flour in a big dish with her hands.

By the time she was done with the job, her new shirt was stained with the flour in several places. She was wearing a flouncy shirt with pleats and a wide hem. It was not a suitable dress to wear if you are planning to work by squatting on the floor.

Usually her routine never involved such chores but currently her monster in law was making sure that her life became a living hell.

Jibran came back after jogging and quickly showered to get ready for breakfast. He found the table unusually laden with a variety of dishes including Aloo parathe, halwa and tarkaree*.
He looked for his Cheese Omlette and bran bread but it was nowhere to be seen.

"Rida please bring my breakfast", he called out to his wife but instead of her, his mother emerged from the kitchen.
