Chapter 11

"Assalam o Alikum* Amee", Rida greeted her mother in law as she walked towards her.

"Hmph...", Mrs Qadeer nodded her head as to acknowledge her daughter in law.

She made her way to the living room all the while carefully observing everything. Rida and Jibran exchanged an awkward glance but quickly looked away.

"Bano please bring a glass of water for Amee", Rida instructed her maid who was bringing Haya and Hamza to the room. Rida took Haya in her arms as Hamza made a beeline towards his grandmother.

"Daddee!!" he squealed.
Mrs Qadeer scooped him up in her arms and showered him with kisses.

"Yes, my sweet Munchkin. Daddee is here."

Bano had brought the chilled glass of water neatly placed in a tray.

"Amee Jee here", she smiled as she tried to give it to Mrs Qadeer but Mrs Qadeer glared as she spoke.

"I am Not your mother, girl. Call me Begum Sahiba."

Poor Bano apologized quickly but Mrs Qadeer wasn't done yet.
"This all is the responsibility of the daughter in law. Not even trained her maid properly and asking her in the first place. She should have brought the water herself."

Rida made a move to transfer Haya into Jibran's lap. But to her dismay, she again earned Mrs Qadeer's disapproval.

"Why! He has been working all day and now he needs to take care of the children too?"
Rida's hand falter as she held Haya with one hand and gave the glass of water to her mother in law.
Knowing too well that argument was out of the question.

She knew her mother in law too well to expect her to behave differently. She was still living in the past century when the daughter in law was always treated like this.

Jibran was embarrassed by his mother's behaviour but he couldn't directly ask her to not give Rida a hard time.

Instead, he said carefully,
"Why don't you take some rest in your room before dinner, Ammee".

"Yeah okay."
She huffed as she made her way to the guest room with him. Holding Hamza's hand in hers.
"Come, my dear prince, I have something for you in my bag, " she cooed to him as she left the room.
