Chapter Eight

Peter's POV

It was only yesterday that Rilian told us about Jonas. Although, I felt as if Elsa is avoiding me for some reason. I hadn't seen her very often, and when I did, she tried not to let our eyes meet. So far, she had been successful.

That morning, I was walking through the ballroom when I glanced over at the balcony to see a figure sitting on the rail. I stopped to get a better look at them, and realized that it was Elsa.

"Are you okay?" I asked her as I stepped out onto the balcony.

She flinched, as I had probably startled her. "I'm fine," she whispered, sounding as if she had been crying.

"Elsa, I don't even need to see your eyes this time to know that you're lying to me."

She shrugged in reply, most likely having no way to counter my statement, because she knew I was right.

There was a long silence, but it wasn't an awkward silence. It was more like a comfortable silence, where it was known that nothing was needed to be said, and that just being there was enough.

Finally, Elsa sniffed, then began to sob. I climbed onto the rail of the balcony and sat next to her, wrapping my arm around her as she cried into my chest. We stayed like that for a while, before she eventually calmed down.

"What's wrong?" I queried.

"Nothing," she replied, "It's not important."

"Elsa, if you're so upset about it, it has to be at least somewhat important."

She sighed. "I can't lie to you, can I?"

"No," I smiled.

"Okay," she breathed, once more letting out a long sigh.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

She nodded, then sat up from my chest to look me in the face. "I'm scared," she whimpered.

"Of what?"

"There's someone out there who knows who I am, but I don't know him. He's threatened my life just to Jonas to do what he wants, and we don't even know what he wants," she took a deep breath, and I used my thumb to wipe away a tear that fell softly down her cheek. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders once again, and she rested her head on my shoulder before continuing. "Peter, he could want to hurt me, or you, or Edmund and Lucy. If Jonas won't tell us anything, the. there's a better chance someone could het hurt. It scares me to death."

"Elsa, I swear, if anyone tries to hurt you, Lucy, or Edmund, they would have to go through me first. Besides, he might not even want anything to do with us."

"I suppose you're right," she concluded, "Thank you, Peter."

After that, we just stayed on the balcony, my arm around her, her head on my shoulders, sitting in a comfortable silence on the rail, watching the sun set.

Jonas's POV

That night, after everyone else in the castle was asleep, I left the room King Rilian had let me stay in and quietly crept down the halls. When I reached the entrance hall, however, I heard someone behind me.

"Jonas? What are you doing?"

I turned around a saw Queen Lucy staring at me expectantly. "I'm just getting some air. I couldn't sleep, so I thought a walk might help."

"You do understand that it's that middle of the night, don't you?"

That hadn't occurred to me. "Yes," I lied, letting out a forced laugh, "I won't be out long, though, don't worry."

"Alright," Lucy agreed, "But if you're not back by morning, I'll have to tell the others."

"That's fine, because I should be back long before then."

Lucy's POV

I woke up the next morning and checked Jonas's room to see if he had returned. He hadn't. A few minutes later, I entered the dining hall and was greeted by Edmund, Peter, Elsa, and Rilian.

"Lucy! There you are!" Elsa exclaimed, "Have you seem Jonas?"

"Actually," I started, "I had heard a noise at about midnight last night, and when I went to check it out, I found Jonas. He said that he couldn't sleep, and he was just going for a short walk to get some air. I told him that if he wasn't back by morning, I would tell you guys. I don't trust him."

"No offense, Elsa, but I don't trust him, either," Ed voiced.

"It's alright," Elsa reassured him, "I don't think we can trust him," she sighed, averting her eyes to the ground. Peter walked up beside her and took her hand, interlocking their fingers. She looked up at him, giving him a soft smile.

"We'll just have to be careful, then," Rilian stated.

The first chapter of many, my lovely readers! But before I continue, I want to ask all of you a question. As you know, I have entered The White Witch's Daughter in the Watty Awards, but I would like to know if you think I should enter Elsa's Story as well. Comment your thoughts, I would love to know what you think! I always enjoy hearing from my readers!
