Chapter Twelve

Now that I knew these Narnians were extremely voilent, and possibly taking it out on anyone even remotely related to Jadis (or so it seemed), I started backing away slowly, as to not make so much noise that I drew attention to myself. But of course, as was just my luck, I stepped in a twig, breaking it with a loud CRACK! that seemed almost ear-splitting at the time. And, clumsy as I was, I didn't just step on the twig, but somehow found a way to trip on it as well, which caused me to squeal as a reflex, and also out of fright. I'm easily frightened, and don't even attempt to ask me why, because I have absolutely no idea.

Peter had just placed his sword back into its sheath, but as a result of my actions, he whipped it back out, pointing it in my direction, mostly because that's where the noises had come from.

"Who's there?!" he demanded.

I gulped, and felt as if he could hear it, even from the great distance he was away from me. I couldn't move. I was to afraid to. Besides, my leg was killing me half to death, and my heart was pounding out of my chest.

Peter began to take cautious steps forward, slowly making his way towards me. As terrified as I was, I knew I had to run, or my life would most likely end, very soon. At this point, he was about six feet away from me, and I was surprised he hadn't seen me yet, but I took that opportunity to leap onto my feet and bolt in the opposite direction, going as fast as my legs could carry me, if not faster. Why was it that lately I had been finding myself in situations where I had to run for my life?

*******

I ran until I until I had reached the Cauldron Pool, and finally noticed that no one had followed me the entire way. But why? Surely they knew who I was, and if they really were wreaking violent havoc on Jadis and her subjects, why wouldn't they come after me? I have a feeling that there's more to this than I know. Or, maybe I'm overthinking and there's even less to it than it seems?

*1,300 YEARS LATER*

I waited on the opposite side of the Great River, watching the Temarines build their bridge across. What was I waiting for, you ask? Well, if you must know, I was waiting for my friend (so to speak), a black dwarf named Nikabrik. He had told me years ago that he knew of a way to revive my mother, who I had learned was dead about 1,300 years ago. He explained a sort of ritual involving Jadis's staff and a son of Adam's blood, but I didn't want the details, I only wanted to get it done. So, naturally, he found mother's staff, and was just waiting for a willing son of Adam to 'donate' the blood, which he said should happen soon.

"Elsa!" I heard from behind me, and turned around to see a talking raven, one of my many spies, flying towards me as fast as his wings could carry him.

I cleared my throat, notifying him that I had heard his mistake. "I mean.... your Highness." he corrected himself, finally reaching me.

"Yes? What is it? Is it done? Why isn't Jadis with you? And where's Nikabrik?"

"Well, you see, we have the staff, but we had problems with the ritual."

"Explain."

"Everything was going according to plan, your Highness, until some of those against our cause interrupted, killing the hag, werewolf, and Nikabrik."

"And where is the staff?"

"Here," he handed me what looked like a small-scale model of Jadis's staff, and it grew in my hand to its full size. "I had to shrink it so I would be able to bring it to you, your Highness."

"That's fine. That's perfectly fine."

I had the staff, I knew the ritual, now all I needed was a son of Adam and a few years' time to prepare.

IT'S OVER!!!! I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT!!!! No, seriously, when I started writing today, I had no intention of finishing the book, but then I got to this chapter and everything just flowed. I also never expected this book to be so short, but then again, I never expected it to be as long as WWD (that's what I'm gonna call The White Witch's Daughter from now on, I guess). So actually, chapter-wise, this was only slightly longer than half of WWD.... Anyway, I will do an acknowledgements section, as I will in most of my stories, but not tonight, because even though I'm still on summer vacation (tomorrow's my last day 😭) my mom still makes me get ready for bed no later than midnight. It sucks, but what can I do, right?
