Kurt Mayhew, an Interpol agent is assigned to the security detail for the upcoming gala hosted by The National Art Center of Tokyo. The exhibition gala is receiving international coverage due to its display of an unearthed manuscript of unknown origin that has been the hot topic for the scientific community for quite some time now. Apart from dealing with his messy divorce, the perpetual unsuccessful capture of the global assassin dubbed as 'The Crimson Wraith' has put him on edge. The assassin has been connected to over a dozen heists across the globe where ransacked houses, bank vaults and museums bear the figure's calling card- the number 8 engraved on corpses left behind in withered and decomposing states as if the life has been drenched out of them. But the most confusing issue that has been plaguing Kurt is that the heists are random and priceless artifacts that would sell for millions are left untouched. No matter how hard he tries the assassin has always been a step ahead of the authorities as if someone leaking information of the security measures taken. Kurt has pleaded Marcus Parker, his Commanding Officer to be put on the security detail along with Marcus himself as the ultimate opportunity to catch the assassin. Marcus, now a veteran close to retirement has been the father figure of Kurt since he can remember, rescuing him from a brutal burglary gone awry. After losing his family in an ill-fated plane crash, Marcus had adopted young Kurt and treated him as his own blood ever since in return Kurt had promised that he'd always have his 'father's' back. As the festive gala comes to an end, the night slowly descends in to a shadowy realm of solitude when the Crimson Wraith quickly makes for the getaway with the coveted prize of the manuscript. Alarms blaring by activating a tripwire, the figure encounters a slew of heavily armed security guards along with Kurt and Marcus which halts the thief, who realizes that it was a trap all along. Managing to disarm the guards and leaving Kurt unconscious, the figure quickly gains leverage but receives a GSW (gunshot wound) on the left leg as one of the guards manages to aim. As he regains consciousness, he finds several withered corpses except one that of Marcus killed by a bullet wound. Devastated beyond comprehension Kurt suffers an emotional breakdown and leaves active duty.
