Week 5: Children's hospital
"Thank you all for coming. This is going to make their day. This week in particular has been hard for everyone it seems like." One of the nurses says as we stand around the nurses' station.
"You just tell us where to go. We will be here all day as far as I know," I smile.
"How do you guys feel about being with a nurse and seeing their patients?" The same nurse suggests and we nod. "You all can meet back up at lunch time."
She tells us which nurse to go with, and we go our separate ways. "My name is Reagan, and our first patient is Avery. She has had a really tough week this week." She informs me and quietly knocks on her door as we arrive. She opens the door and I wait for Reagan to tell her about me. "Good morning, Avery. How are you feeling?" I don't hear a response. "Are you up for a surprise visitor?" I don't hear anything again. "Well, I think you will really like her. Come in, Adelaide."
I walk in with a soft smile. "Good morning, Avery. I heard you haven't been feeling well." The little girl looks over at me with her bright green eyes.
"She doesn't talk much," Reagan whispers as she leaves.
I sit down beside her bed and grab a book. "Is it okay if I read or do you want me to do something else?" I smile and begin reading. I use different voices to make it more interesting. When I finish reading and put the book back in its place, she is smiling.
Reagan comes in and says that I have to go to the next patient. I notice Avery frowning as I leave her room. "Could I take her to lunch with me?" I ask Reagan.
"I don't know," she says hesitantly.
"Could I eat lunch with her in her room?"
Reagan nods, and I smile. I visit a few other patients, but Avery stays fresh on my mind. I am excited when it is finally lunch time. I go through the cafeteria line as quickly as I can before passing the guys and heading toward Avery's room.
"Wait! Adelaide!" Reece exclaims as he rushes toward me. "Aren't you going to eat with us?"
I shake my head. "No, I'm going to surprise Avery and eat with her."
"Was she one of your patients?" He questions, and I nod. "Could we come too?"
"Maybe, but I want to ask her first." He nods, and I continue on my way. I knock on the door quietly before peeking inside. "Can I come in?" Avery's face lights up, and she nods excitedly. I glance outside to see all of the guys coming down the hall. "I have some friends that would like to meet you. Do you want to meet them? There are six of them." She shakes her head. "How about only other four visitors? They are really nice." She thinks about it before nodding her head. I step outside and tell the guys. "She only wants four other visitors. Darren and Zeke was there a patient you saw and would like to have lunch with them?" Zeke nods and they leave.
I smile at the four before stepping in her room. "Avery this is Bennett, Dallas, Reece, and-."
"Mickey Mouse!" She exclaims and holds her arms out.
Joseph grins and holds his arms out. "Avery!" He walks over to her and hugs her, but she won't let go of him. Joseph gently picks her up and sits in a chair with her in his lap. I push the food table in front of them with both of their lunches on it so they can eat together.
"Is Mickey Mouse your favorite?" Dallas asks as we begin to eat.
"Yes, but so is she." She says and points to me.
"She's our favorite too." Joseph replies.
Lunch goes by too fast. Avery loves the guys, and they make her giggle too many times to count. I made them come here obviously to make these children happier, but also to see how they interacted with children. Bennett curled up next to the children in bed and pretended to be a puppy. Zeke was the perfect Stitch and the children absolutely adored him. Dallas connected with a small toddler who clung to his leg because he didn't want him to leave when it was time for him to go. Reece was sort of nervous at first, but once in warmed up to them, he was his usual self. The kids didn't care for Darren unless they were a fan of superman. Joseph was better with children than I expected. My heart melted the way he held Avery, but his attention seemed to be on me which made my heart beat out of my chest.
We finish for the day and walk out of the hospital. Dallas matches my pace beside me. "Can I borrow your phone?"
"Yeah, sure," I reply and hand him my phone.
"Hey, God. I just wanted to call and let you know that I found your missing angel." I glance at him with my jaw dropped, and he grins while handing my phone back.
"Are you religious?" Reece questions as he turns around and walks backwards. "Because you're the answer to all my prayers."
"No, it has to be angel related," Dallas argues.
"Guys, shut up. Those have never actually worked." Joseph declares over his shoulder.
"Have you ever used a pick-up line?" Bennett questions.
"No," Joseph replies.
"Then-." Reece starts to say, but I don't let him finish.
"Joseph's right, guys, at least about meanyway."
