One
Knock knock knock! I opened the door to three children standing on my porch. Two taller boys and one small girl. Both boys looked identical with the same glimmering blue eyes and wispy blonde hair and pale skin. The girl had curly brunette hair and blue eyes, but they all wore rags and looked extremely thin. One of the boys spoke up "Privet, my mozhem voyti?" It seems they only spoke russian. I stared in confusion, 'how can I talk to them?' But then the little girl spoke in broken English " Do you... russian?" I sighed in relief 'thank god she can speak some English' "Do you mean 'do you speak Russian?" The girl nodded and fixed her wording "Yes!...do.you..." A long pause it seemed she was trying to remember what I just said "speak...Russian?" I answered "no i don't speak Russian '' The girl continued to speak "Ok, we are... refugees! From Russia, they no speak English" she gestured toward the boys. "I see, are you three hungry, you look thin? '' The boys looked confused and the girl then translated my sentence to Russian so the boys could understand. One boy spoke "o da pozhaluysta" while the other nodded. I ushered them in. They all sat down at the table as I got some food. I made some pasta and layed out the three steaming bowls in front of them.
The boys picked at their food before the sister nodded and then they quickly gobbled down their food just like the girl. "What are your names, children?" I asked once they finished their food. I couldn't keep calling them 'the boys' and 'the girl' the girl translated my sentence to Russian before she turned to me and said "my name,is Lillith" the boy on the right spoke up "Ivan" the other said "Antin" I nod and mumble "okay Lilith,Antin, and Ivan" I turned back to them and added "I'll go prepare the guest rooms.Lilith nodded and thanked me as I hurried of to get a spare air mattress out and set it up in the spare room.
