Bonus chapter: From bad to worse

A/n: A little somethin' somethin' I decided to make after I did a little reading a moment ago.

A/n: It also works well with:

After surviving the crash, and Qrow trying his hardest to comfort Yang, the group soon made their way to Kuchinashi. With Jaune, Blake, and Ozpin/Oscar needing help to be moved, the party was able to make it to the shady city within an hour. Wasting no time, they rushed to the nearest clinic in the city. Gaining attention from some of the locals as they passed by.

That was all a day ago. So far, because of the crash, Blake is comatosed with several broken ribs while Jaune suffers a concussion with internal bleeding. Oscar suffers a fractured skull at the back of his head. Everyone else were lucky to only deal with fractured bones and sprains. And with the loss of Ruby, some are dealing with more pain than just physical.

Right now, Qrow is sitting in a chair next to a sleeping Oscar. For the first time in his life trying to figure out what to do while sober. So far it's going horribly for him. He looks over at the sleeping form on the hospital bed, hoping he'll wake up so he can talk to the other guy.

Qrow: "sigh"..... I should check up on Yang.

Standing up he takes his leave, walking down the hospital to a few rooms down. After passing a few doors, he now stands in front of the door to his niece. He stands there, now realising that this might be a bad idea. The hell can he do now? A war has broken out, they barely survived a crash, and they couldn't find Ruby. What could Qrow possibly say to reassure her? "Don't worry, kid, everything is gonna be fine. Nothing to fear as long as we have each other. We can make it through this, no matter what." That would be much easier to accomplish if it was Ruby he was comforting. At least with her, her child-like attitude would make it just a bit possible to convince.

In the stillness, he picks up the sound of sobbing from the other side of the door. After a moment, Qrow takes a deep breath and opens the door and walks in. He steps inside and spots Yang quickly wiping her eyes. Sitting up in her bed.

Yang: "ahem" Hey, uncle.

Qrow: Hey, kid... probably a dumb question, but; how are you holding up?

The young Huntress in training looks down. A dejected look plastered on her face.

Yang: Not sure how to answer that. On one hand, we just survived an air ship crash. On the other, Ruby is... gone. And I don't know which gone I mean. Oh, and on a third hand, someone just declared World War Two barely a day ago. So yeah, uncle Qrow, I'm fantastic!

She looks over to Qrow and sports a mock smile before dropping it. Her answer catches him off guard. Trying to think of something else to say, Yang beats him to it.

Yang: So, what are we gonna do? Fighting Grimm is sort of expected, but a war with actual people? That's... kinda much for trainees. Or anyone for that matter.

Qrow: I'm not gonna lie, Yang. It might get a lot worse than you think. But the way I see it, we stick to our previous plan. Once everyone is patched up, we'll head to Atlas with the rel-...

Yang: Uncle?

Qrow:... Oh my god, we left the relic at the crash site.

Yang: What?! We need to-

Qrow: Way ahead of you. I'll be gone for an hour or so. Just stay put.

He quickly takes his leave and heads for the exit. Trying to be calm and collective over the fact that they accidentally left behind a VERY important piece of cargo for practically anyone to grab. He begins to jog through the halls.

Qrow: 'Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit!'

Finally going through the exit, not caring if anybody sees him, he takes on his bird form and immediately takes to the sky. Completely oblivious to a limping beowolf making its way to the city. Down by the entrance, four guards are seated at a fold table and playing a card game.

Guard1: Got any twos?

Guard3: We're playing poker, Mike.

The beowolf slowly makes its way towards the guards. None of them noticing it yet. Strange protrusions stick out of its sides, one of them causing the Grimm to drag its left foreleg on the ground. As it draws near, one of the guards finally spots the Grimm from the corner of his eye.

Guard4: Oh sh-Grimm!

Catching everyone's attention, they grab their weapons and take aim. The beowolf does not react as it keeps walking. At least to the best of its ability. Without firing, the guards soon see the beasts behavior and take notice of strange brown protrusions from... all over it.

Not a moment later, it soon topples over on the dirt floor. Letting out a slight muscle spaz before finally going still. Its body slowly dissolving soon after. One of the guards builds up enough courage to walk towards the fresh carcass to inspect it. Setting aside her gun, she sees one of the objects sticking out of it and grabs it. With a hard pull, she rips it out of the corpse and holds it up.

Guard2: Is thi-This is a branch.

Turning around, she shows the branch to the other guards. The look of confusion evident on their faces. She looks back over to the dead Grimm. Its body is liddered with branches embedded into its flesh.

Guard3: What the hell did this?

In a cruel twist of fate, he gets his answer. A low rumble is felt through the earth as the guards snap their attention to the nearby forest. In the thick shrubbery, they see glimpses of deformed figures rushing towards them.

Guard4: Why do you even speak, Todd?

Back at the crash site, Qrow shifts out of his bird form and lands near the debris. He scans across the broken air ship.

Qrow: Ok, no scavengers. Good. Now to search through several tons of metal for a glorified lamp.

Before he steps forward, the sound of shifting metal in the wreckage catches his attention. He stops dead in his tracks as he soon sees said metal moving. Not long after, it is shifted to the side as something stands up. He doesn't even know what the hell he's looking at. For starters it's abnormally tall, even though it appears to be slouching. Two scythe like appendages are protruding from its back and hanging over its shoulders. A strange blue light emanates from its eyes and maw. And over all, it looks as if it's made entirely of wood.

Qrow finally notices that it's holding the Relic of Knowledge in its claws. Without hesitating, he pulls out his weapon and charges at the wooden creature. He soon jumps in the air and prepares to swing his bulking sword down on the beast. It snaps its attention to him and quickly brings its second pair of arms up and blocks his attack. With a mighty push, it shoves Qrow back and makes a run for the forest line.

Qrow: NO!

He soon gives chase to the creature, transforming his sword in its scythe form. As the creature made its way into the forest, Qrow was about to follow suit. Only to stop in his tracks from an audible explosion from behind. Turning around he sees pillars of smoke emanating from the distance, from the same direction of the city. He looks back to the forest then back to the distant smoke. With a grunt of anger, he shifts into his bird form and flies back to the city. Back to the forest, several hulking tree beasts step out from behind the trees as Qrow takes his leave.

Back to the hospital, Oscar begins to stir awake. As soon as he opens his eyes, they immediately close shut to block out the white florescent lights. Taking a moment to adjust to the lighting, he finally opens his eyes again. He sits up in his bed and gently cradles his throbbing head.

Oscar: Argh. My head. Are you there, Ozpin?

Ozpin: 'Yes. It's good to see you are okay, Oscar.'

Oscar: My head feels like it was cracked open and someone went to town in it with a whisk. Okay is a bit of an overstatement.

Ozpin: 'Just get some rest, my boy. I'm not entirely sure on what even happened, but we will figure this out once we're back to-'

Oscar: Wait. Do you hear that?

As the two remain silent, they hear a faint sound from outside. It gradually gets louder. It almost sounds like... fighting. Not a moment later, something bashes against the door. It doesn't break, but it won't last long if it happens again. Either way, this startles the young boy and causes Ozpin to be on high alert... About as high alert as a soul can be without control at the moment.

Immediately the door bursts open as a horrid wooden beast falls forward and flails about as it tries to stay standing. As it regains its balance, it looks directly at Oscar.

Completely in shock, Oscar is petrified on the spot as Ozpin is trying to tell him to give him control. Without pause the beast prepares to pounce on him, letting out a horrid growl. Its action is cancelled as a thin blade is plunged into its back. Now letting out a pained yelp. Standing behind it, Weiss pulls her weapon out and thrusts it in the back of the creatures skull. It goes limp from the blow, toppling onto the floor. With heavy breathing, Weiss looks up and sees Oscar staring at her slack jawed.

Weiss: Oh, you're awake! Look, there's no time to explain-

Nora rushes through the hallway with her grenade launcher out. She runs pass them while yelling.

Nora: We're being attacked by Mother Nature from hell!

She continues running as Weiss just glances over at the door.

Weiss: Actually, that pretty much sums it up.

An explosion close by is heard as it shakes the building.

Ren: NORA! Not in the hospital!

Outside the room and down the hall, Ren uses StormFlower to mow down a pack of beasts rushing towards him. He tries to keep his shots from spreading, just in case. As the creatures fall quickly, one of them takes to the wall and crawls towards Ren with haste. He jumps back as the creature pounces at where he once was. With the blades of his SMGs, Ren plunges his weapons into the beast. Hacking it into splinters.

From the other side of the hall, Nora charges at a wooden abomination with her hammer at the ready. As the creature draws near, she thrusts the pummel of her hammer into its mid section and forces it back. She soon swings her weapon over her head and brings it down onto her enemy's. The hammer busts through it and into the floor. Using her momentum she pole vaults with her weapon and lands her feet on the floor again. Still pushing forward, she swings her hammer again and bats another creature away. Sending it hurtling down the hall and toppling over others of its kind.

As it flies out of a pre broken window, Yang stands guard at the door leading to Blake and Jaune close by. Back handing one of them away with her robotic arm, she throws a solid punch at a charging monster. On contact, it explodes into a plume of splinters. She pulls back her arm with her remaining Ember Celica and fires a shell at another of them.

Continuing to fend them off, Yang just sports a look of sheer murder as her eyes are glowing red. Fists flying, splinters bouncing off of aura, she tears through them as she defends her friends. From behind, a tree beast crawls across the ceiling and into the room. As it enters it falls from the ceiling and lands in the middle of the room, looking upon the two immobile figures. It walks over to Jaune's bed, it's arm forming into a pike in the process.

As it prepares to strike, a figure bursts through the window and drop kicks it out of the room. The impact of it hitting the opposite wall catches Yang's attention for a second before focussing back on the charging horde. Qrow rushes out with his scythe and sees the charging mass of wood.

Qrow: Yang, get down!

He runs straight towards the horde with his weapon extended out. Yang quickly ducks down as her uncle soon flies over her head, twisting his body around. Without warning, he spins towards them with his scythe and slices through them like a demented top. He finally comes to a stop and lands in the center of the hallway. The beasts behind him reduced to nothing but lumber.

Up ahead, Ren and Nora deal with the remaining wooden creatures. With all of that said and done, Nora tries to catch her breath as Ren looks upon a stick jutting out from his waist. A literal thorn in his side as blood slowly seeps out. He grabs a hold of it and yanks it out with a pained grunt. Tossing aside the bloodied stick, he places his hand on his wound and applies pressure. Letting his aura heal it. Weiss finally makes her way from Oscar's room, looking at the dead creatures at their feet.

Nora: Well, that was fun. Let's never do that again. Ever.

Qrow: Hate to burst your bubble, but the whole city is being seized by these things.

Weiss: What?!

Nora: Are you kidding me?

Yang: Uncle, what about-

Qrow: They took it. And something tells me there's even more of them out there.

Yang: Just what the hell is even going on here?

Qrow: Kid, I've been turned into a bird, faced off against horrors that don't even have names, witnessed events that would absolutely break the wills of strong men, and took part in situations that I still try to deny ever happening to this day. And I can honestly say... I haven't got a fucking clue.

Ren: Not very reassuring.

Qrow: Wasn't trying to be.

Their conversation is interrupted by the sound of gunfire from outside. Rushing to a nearby broken window, they look out and see more of these monsters fighting the city guards. Tearing each other apart by claws or bullets.

Nora: Oh wow, this place is being seized!

Qrow: All right... Weiss, Ren, you two guard the hospital. We'll head out and help the guards push these things back.

With no arguments, the group set out to their tasks. Although not without some form of fear on the strange new beasts now plaguing Mistral.

A/n: Because I can.

A/n: Yes, I'm an asshole! Get over it!
