Chapter 35

The car came closer. He heard his heartbeat thumping in his ears. His father was sitting beside him, screaming his name. His vision blackened before an image flashed before his eyes. His father, his mother and him as a baby. Hiccup screamed out, the car only yards away, coming at a scary high speed towards them. This wouldn't end well.

"Hiccup!" he heard his father yell before he felt the intense impact of the car slamming into theirs. The last thing he heard was his father yelling and the deafening sound of metal and glass shattering.

Hiccup eyes shot open and he looked around, remembering he was in the hospital. His eyes darted to the clock over the door.

8:10 AM.

He hadn't gotten much sleep but after that nightmare, he was sure he wouldn't be able to fall back asleep.

A nurse opened the sliding door to the room and the bright light from the hospital hallways streamed into the room, filling it with a soft, yellow-whitish light. "Good morning, Henry," She said and walked up to Astrid's bed, grabbing the small board with a paper that was hanging at the end of the bed.

"Good morning. What are you doing?" He asked, looking at the nurse before looking over at Astrid. "I'm just writing down that her cut is healing steadily. She can be discharged in a week or two," She said and put the board back on its place.

Hiccup didn't say anything until he saw her hand twitching. "Is she waking up?" He asked and looked at the nurse.

She walked over to Astrid and pulled out a small flashlight, turning it on and opening her eyes. "Not right now but she will soon. She'll probably be confused and wonder why she's here so I suggest you stay with her," The nurse said and turned the flashlight off, walking up to the door.

Before leaving, she turned around and looked at Hiccup. "Do you need anything?" She asked. He shook his head, looking over at Astrid. "Okay. I'll come back later to change the bandages on your leg and show you how to clean it and wrap it," She said before leaving.

Right. He almost forgot about his amputated foot.

Almost.

What would Astrid think? She was beautiful no matter what she looked like to him. He loved all of her and all her flaws. But, what would she think when she woke up and saw his leg? She'd think he was a freak. That it would be disgusting.

Astrid groaned and Hiccup's head whipped towards her, his eyes fixated on anything that showed signs of waking up.

Her eyes blinked, even with her eyelids closed and he smiled, scooting to the edge of the hospital bed. He leaned over the railing and hooked his pinkie into her thumb.

The navy blue nail polish had chipped on her nails and her fingertips were slightly orange due to the Betadine they had used to sterilize her skin.

"Mhhh," He heard her hum. Astrid's eyes slowly fluttered open. Hiccup sighed in relief and looked at her. Her eyes moved, trying to take in her surroundings. "Shhh," Hiccup hushed her and her head turned towards him.

"Hiccup?" Her voice asked, hoarse and barely above a whisper. "I'm here, Astrid. I'm here," He said and squeezed her thumb with his pinkie.

Astrid inhaled slowly. "But, how? I got a call saying you died," She said, not believing that he was actually alive, sitting beside her and talking. "I know. They told me..." He said and slowly moved, winching due to his leg. He looked at her.

"What happened?"

Hiccup looked at her. He had to tell her. Better now than later. "Remember when you fell asleep on the couch?" He asked. Astrid nodded and watched him.

"I left to go to...dad's place and he said that we had to go to the police station to fill out paperwork about me being next as Mayor. We were talking while he drove and then a car came at breakneck speed. It crashed into us..." Hiccup's voice cracked but he continued, a tear falling from his eyes. "Dad passed away and I had to get my foot amputated. I knew something was wrong the second I woke up and I managed to convince some paramedics to take me home. I found you in the bathroom and, I..." He trailed off, tears slipping from his eyes. "What were you thinking?!"

His eyes were bloodshot and his breath was shaking.

Astrid didn't know what to say.

She moved her head to look up at the ceiling. A tear slipped out of her eyes and slid down over her cheekbone and down into her hair. "I'm sorry, Hiccup. I just..." She trailed off. He looked at her. "I know but you can't do that. You have no idea what I went through to get you to lay in this bed today, Astrid," Hiccup said, his voice rising slowly.

Astrid looked at him and hastily sat up but it was a wrong idea. Her eyes blackened due to the lack of oxygen transported to her brain.

Hiccup didn't hesitate a second and his arm grabbed her left one, his hand holding the naked skin revealed between the hospital gown under her shoulder and the bandages below her elbow. "I-I'm sorry. I just thought you died and I don't know how I could've-" Hiccup interrupted her by tugging on her arm.

"Just...please, don't ever do something like that again."

Astrid looked at him, staring into the eyes of the man she loved too much for her own good, - obviously. Hiccup pulled his hand away from her arm and looked at her thoroughly, "Can you please promise me that you'll never do something like this again? I don't know what I'd do without you," He said, his voice fading, sounding calmer than before.

The blonde sighed and nodded. "I promise," She said. "Good. I'll always be here. I promise you that, M'lady."

Astrid looked at him and saw nothing but the truth. "I know. Thank you for that. I'm sorry for making all of this so much more complicated."

"Astrid-"

"No, Hiccup. I'm truly sorry for making this situation worse than it already is. You're here because of that car crash and I'm here because I tried to kill myself," She said, her chest heaving. She moved her left arm but a sharp pain ran through her entire left side and she winced.

Hiccup inhaled. "I don't mean this in a good way but, with you here, being the way you are means you don't have to come and go on visiting hours..." He said and looked at his girlfriend.

Even with her baggy hospital gown, IV's sticking out of her arms and her hair messy, she was beautiful. She would always be beautiful to him.

She hissed but leaned over to Hiccup, careful with the intravenous drip, the infusion pump and the heart monitor cables sticking to her chest, she held her right hand out for him. She had somehow moved and was sitting in the side of the bed, face to face with Hiccup.

Hiccup watched her as she struggled to hold onto the railing of the bed. He held out his hand for her and she smiled.

Astrid held her arm leveled, - with her elbow bent and arm resting just below her chest. She placed her right arm, - the one that wasn't messed up - on Hiccup's shoulder and she pulled him towards her. "I'm sorry," She whispered before kissing him.

Oh man, she almost forgot how amazing it felt to kiss him. "I love you," She said against his lips, holding his shoulder tightly with her hand. The needle on the back of her hand stung from the pull but she didn't care.

She just wanted to kiss him. To know that he was actually okay and to finally register it in her mind that he was alive and well. "I love you too, Astrid," Hiccup murmured against her lips and she smiled.

At that moment, she couldn't ask for more other than that the person standing at the door would stop knocking.
