Chapter 34

(A/N: I suggest you listen to, "Chord Overstreet - Hold On.")

Hiccup didn't know where he was. The only thing he knew was that there was a very intense light and that he couldn't see. His hand was over his eyes, trying to cover them as if there was a blinding sun shining right onto him.

"Hiccup," He heard a voice say, echoing.

Wait. He recognized that voice. "Dad?" He asked, looking around frantically. His eyes started to get used to the light and he pulled his hand away. "Dad, where are you?" He asked, twisting and turning in search for a source for the voice.

Stoick appeared a few yards in front of him. "Right here, son," He said and walked up to him. Stoick placed his big hands on Hiccup's shoulders and looked down at him with sad eyes. "Dad?" Hiccup asked, his voice fading when he saw the look on his fathers' face.

"Listen, Hiccup...I won't be able to be there for you anymore."

He looked up at his father, eyebrows furrowed and his head shaking softly. "I'm sorry I had to leave this early. I'll always be with you in here, though," Stoick said and pulled a hand away from Hiccup's shoulder, placing it on his chest. "I'm sorry. I can't stay for very long," His soft voice said and he pressed a kiss to his sons head before pulling away and turning away.

"Let me come with you," Hiccup called out after him. Stoick halted and turned around. "No, you can't. You have to take care of Astrid. She needs you. You have to go back and help her. You two have a future together. You need to be there for her. She needs you," He said before turning around and walking away.

"No! Dad," Hiccup said, his voice breaking.

The light faded and a searing pain shot up his left leg, striking him in the chest.

He heard beeping. Not car beeping or phone beeping. This was a different kind of beeping. The one you hear in the hospital when you're connected to a heart monitor.

His eyes slowly opened and the first thing he saw was intense white lights, white walls and...a woman holding his hand...?

God, his head hurt.

Hiccup's sense came back and he remembered everything that had happened.

Astrid being sick at home, driving, icy road, car crash...his dad. No, I couldn't have been true, could it?

"Hiccup?" Valka asked as she saw her son looking around. Hiccup turned his head towards the woman, wondering who she was, why she was there and why she was holding his hand. Nurses don't do those stuff, do they?

"Who are you?" He asked and looked at her holding his hand. "I'm sorry, Hiccup. Sorry for not coming back after all these years. I hope you can forgive me someday," Valka said, eyes watering.

His mind was working full force before something snapped. Not coming back for all those years?

"...mom?"

"Yes. Look, I can explain later. How are you feeling?" She asked. Hiccup moved and slowly sat up. "Careful," Valka said and changed the position of the bed. "I'm okay right now. Where's Astrid?" He asked and looked around, his head feeling heavy.

"Astrid? Who's that?" Valka asked and looked at him. Hiccup's head whipped toward her. "She's my girlfriend. Isn't she here?" He asked, his heart rate quickening, - he could hear it. "No?"

"You have to take care of Astrid. She needs you," Replayed in his mind and his heartbeat increased.

Hiccup called in a nurse, panicking. "Excuse me? Has a tall, blonde, blue-eyed girl come in here, asking after me?" He asked. The nurse shook her head. "I don't know but I can go and get Helen. She's the one who called someone when you came in."

Hiccup nodded.

The nurse hurried out.

"Calm down, Hiccup. I'm sure she's fine-" Valka said but was interrupted.

"No, she's not!" Hiccup exclaimed loudly. "She's suicidal. If the receptionist called her and told her something that clearly isn't true, she'll kill herself," Hiccup said, his hands shaking.

Valka didn't know what to say. Her heartbeat picked up when she saw how stressed her son was.

An aged woman came into the room and introduced herself. "I'm Helen. Can I help you with anything?" She asked. Hiccup looked at her, his heartbeat beating loudly in his ears. "Did you possibly call a certain Astrid Hofferson today?" He asked, his voice hurried.

Helen nodded. "Yes, I did. Why?" She questioned him. "What did you tell her?" He asked, his breath shaking. "I...I told her that you got into a car accident and that we weren't sure how you'd be if you woke up," She said slowly.

Hiccup's whole body started shaking. "I need to go home! Now!" He said, looking at her. "But, you can't. You're still recovering," Valka cut in. Hiccup looked at her with wide eyes. "What?"

"When you crashed...they had to amputate your left foot or you wouldn't have made it," Helen said, her voice hesitant.

Hiccup laid back slowly. "Amputate?" He asked, not believing it. "Yes, Hiccup. I'm sorry," Valka said.

Hiccup hastily sat up. Even though he had gotten such bad news and was hurting badly by his recently lost father, he looked at his mother and the receptionist with a determined look on his face. "I still need to go and see my girlfriend."

Helen looked at him. "Why?" She asked. "She's suicidal. I'm the only one she has. You basically told her that I wouldn't make it. I don't want to think about what she might be doing right now," He said and proceeded to get out of bed.

Helen looked at him, a bewildered look on her face.

The ambulance ride there was quiet but fast.

Hiccup had somehow managed to convince some paramedics that he needed to be driven home because he had a bad feeling about Astrid. The line repeated itself in his head. "You have to take care of Astrid. She needs you."

His hands were shaking and his breath was ragged. His leg, - or what was left of it, at least - hurt like hell but he couldn't care about it at that moment.

He just wanted to make sure Astrid was okay. If he got home and found her...dead, he'd never forgive himself. He didn't know what he would do without her.

Hiccup got help out of the ambulance and with crutches and he quickly hopped up to his front door. "There's a spare key under the doormat," He said, panicked. Valka lifted the doormat and found the key, unlocking the door as fast as she could.

"Astrid?!" He yelled before even entering the house. He just wanted to know if she was okay. Toothless and Stormfly ran up to him, meowing profusely and loudly, circling him before running up to the bathroom door. Hiccup threw away one of the crutches and hopped up to the bathroom door.

Loving and fighting, accusing, uniting, I can't imagine a world with you gone...

By now, his eyes were watering and he knew very well that something had happened. "It's locked!" He exclaimed. One of the paramedics walked up to the door and pushed on it. "Can I...?" He asked. Hiccup motioned for him. "Do whatever you want, just get me into the bathroom," He said, hands and legs shaking, his teeth chattering and tears flowing down his cheeks.

The joy and the chaos, the demons we're made of, I'd be so lost if you left me alone,

The paramedic backed up and then set off into a run, hitting the door with his shoulder. It flew open and revealed a not so good sight. "Astrid!" Hiccup yelled, somehow running in and throwing himself on the ground beside her.

You locked yourself in the bathroom, lying on the floor when I break through, I pull you in to feel your heartbeat.

His hand flew up to her forearm arm, holding it tightly to create pressure against her gaping cut.

Time seemed to slow down for him for a second time that day. Hiccup watched as the paramedics paced in and out of the house, getting bandages and medicine and the stretcher and taking care of Astrid while he was crying into her hair, both because his leg hurt so incredibly much, losing his father and finding his beautiful girl like this.

He looked at her, his eyes traveling over her face and he placed his hands on her cheeks. "Please, don't leave me."

Can you hear me screaming, "Please don't leave me."

Everything was a blur for him. One moment, he was in the bathroom, praying for her to make it and the next, he was in the ambulance, sitting beside her. Holding her hand, he prayed to his father for keeping her alive.

Hold on, I still want you. Come back, I still need you. Let me take your hand, ill make it right. I swear to love you all my life...

The world blacked out.

Hold on, I still need you.

When he had awoken once again, they were in the hospital, their beds next to each other and he noticed dozens of cables and IV fluids connected to both of them.

He watched her.

His leg was throbbing but he was thankful for the high morphine dosage he had gotten. At least he didn't have to deal with the pain at that moment.

He sighed. She had almost died because of him. He heard her heartbeat from the monitor.

It beat slower than his but he didn't care about that. He only cared about the fact that her heart was beating after all of that blood loss.

They were a bit beat up and bruised but they were good.

°°°

Astrid groaned, her head turning from side to side as if she was having a nightmare. Hiccup turned to look at her and carefully reached over, placing his hand in hers. "Shh, I'm here," He whispered at her. She calmed down and inhaled softly, sleeping soundly.

He looked at her arm and the bandages wrapped thick around her forearm.

She had ended up getting 25 stitches.

It was just a matter of time before she would wake up and find herself in hospital.

Hiccup laid back down, hand still holding hers softly. His eyes turned over to the clock on the wall, just over the door.

6:40 AM.

He had been up all night due to pains and the overall worrying about her not being alright. He felt fine, even if his heart hurt immensely. He lost his father, barely made it out alive from a bad car crash and almost lost Astrid on the same day.

He prayed that his father was watching over both of them right now.

Maybe he should sleep. Even for just an hour or two. Today would be a long day and he needed some rest.

He inhaled slowly. "I love you, Astrid," He whispered before darkness surrounded him and he fell into an uneasy sleep.
