The Wait

" I have to go Y/n- Y/n?" The boy turned back to see that the windowsill was empty, but he could see a small girl-sized shadow running away from Casita.

" Don't forget me!" She said as her voice faded into the distance.

" I won't," The boy whispered to himself. " I will wait for you."

Thus, Camilo Madrigal received his gift. The gift of shape-shifting. It would be years before he would ever see Y/n again.

The small boy was pushed into town by his Abuela, the boy looked to the tall adult people around him that walked around the village.

" Why are we here Abuela?"

His grandmother gave him a stern look. " The time for your tricks and pranks is over, Camilo. You must help this family, make us proud mijo." She said as she gently urged him to help a nearby villager.

Camilo looked back to the large expanse of villagers before him with a nervous look.

And so his training began.

" I'll be bold.

As well as strong.

And use my head~"

" One two three one two three one two three- OOF!" Camilo fell as he trained himself to dance in his and Y/n's old hideout. It was his only escape from his family.

" Alongside my heart.

So tame my flesh-

And fix my eyes."

The boy marched behind his family as they made their way into the village, he stopped as he saw one of his old friends and waved. " Hey Ignacio!"

" Camilo, March! We must not fall behind!" Abuela scolded as she pushed the boy along.

" A tethered mind-

Freed from the lies..."

A slightly taller Camilo hid in his hideout as he practiced guitar, the leaves of the trees fell as their color was orange.

" And I'll kneel down..

Wait for now..."

A now teenage Camilo stood with a straightened back as Abuela walked by, stopping to straighten the boy's ruana, which was crooked on his shoulders. He let out a breath as the old woman walked away.

" I'll kneel down-

Know my ground..."

Camilo danced behind the house as his best friend Ignacio played an accordion.

" 'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you!

And I will wait, I will wait for you!

And I will wait, I will wait for you!

I will wait, I will wait for you!-"

" I WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU CAMILO!" Felix said as he grabbed the boy by his ear suddenly, dragging him off.

" Papa I was on my way!" Camilo argued as he waved goodbye to Ignacio hurriedly.

" I know I know but Abuela said to not be late for this! She said some old friends were back in the Encanto and that we should be there to greet them. And she meant all of us." His father said as he gave a pointed look to the boy.

Camilo gave a nervous laugh at his father. " Couldn't I just-"

" Nope!"

" But I-"

" Uh-uh."

" BUT PAPA-"

" Crakakakakaka-SHHHH!" Felix put a finger over Camilo's mouth.

" No arguments. You are coming to the town square with your family. You can hang out with Ignacio later."

Camilo sighed as he blew a strand of curly hair away from his face. " Fine."

" THATS MY BOY!" Felix said as he put an arm around his son's shoulders.

The two made their way to the town square, where they saw a makeshift arena in the clearing just ahead.

Camilo's eyes widened as he stopped.

It couldn't be...could it?

There was only one way to find out. He took a deep breath and followed his father into the stands to sit.

An older looking man made his way into the center of the arena. " Senorias and Seniors! You may remember us, we came to your humble Encanto many years ago! Now, we have come back after what- ten years?" He chuckles after the audience laughs. " Now- We welcome you all back to Los grandes jinetes de la familia Cortez! " The man says with a smile as everyone cheers. Horses trot out as women in long colorful dresses and hats ride atop the horses, they all form a vertical line as the horses stomp and snort in the dirt.

Camilo's eyes searched each woman's face, but they were all blocked by the hats.

Is she not here?..NO! She has to be! Maybe she's not riding the horses-

The boy's thoughts all slammed to a halt as his eyes connected to a girl on the far left who sat atop of her horse, fixing her hat.

The girl's h/c hair shined in its woven braid, and she silently giggled at something one of the women next to her must have said.

Camilo's whole world seemed to still around him as he stared.

It's her. It has to be.

Suddenly loud music started, and the horses all galloped past in a flurry of dust, they circled the arena quickly and trotted in straight lines, it was like the horses themselves were dancing.

Some girls leaned so far back on their horses as they galloped, it seemed they would fall off. Cowboys lassoed around the women as their horses circled and jumped.

The Madrigals, along with the other villagers whooped and hollered at the synchronized dancing.

The music ended as the women all bowed their hats and galloped out of the arena. The man from earlier's voice rang through the stands.

" And now, for our special act, the mysterious, the amazing, the trickiest rider in Columbia, The Charreria!"

A new type of music started as everyone clapped to the beat.

A girl figure in a maroon cloak stood atop of a wooden post in the sunlight as everyone gasped.

Suddenly everyone gasped, and one woman even screamed, as the girl jumped off the high wooden post headfirst, she quickly caught the strand of banners that hung from the sides of the arena, and ziplined to the center podium. She swung off and landed on her horse, her maroon cloak flew in the wind.

The girl's horse galloped around the arena as people cheered, suddenly the girl stood. Everyone's eyes were trained on her as she backflipped on the animal, landing on her feet.

Everyone cheered wildly as the girl performed.

Camilo's eyes were wide as his jaw dropped.

The girl suddenly fainted and everyone gasped, thinking she was about to fall off.

But the girl's leg carried herself on the side of her horse, in such a position that she never fell off. It was all a trick.

" ARRIBA GALILEO! ARRIBA!" Her voice commanded. The horse suddenly jumped on two hooves in the air, jumping around in a tight circle. The horse continued to gallop as the girl stood once again, this time raising one leg in the air, and one arm stretched out ahead of her in a ballerina pose. She kept her balance as the horse kept its fast pace.

" NO WAY!" Camilo couldn't help yelling. No one had ever seen such balance on a horse before in the Encanto. No one had ever even dared to try these tricks.

Suddenly the girl took ahold of a rope as the horse passed by, she swung with one arm and glided across the crowd as they gasped in awe. Her cloak flew behind her in the breeze as she circled above the villagers gracefully.

The curly-haired boy watched as the girl flew over him in a flurry of fabric and dust. Her e/c eyes shined in the darkness of her hood as they looked at the boy with wide, surprised eyes.

Y/n. It was Y/n.

He had to talk to her.
