Chapter 21: Fall
Lucy POV
Everyone was struggling to make up for the past days without Natsu. It's going good. If you were an outside person being given information about are situation you would think we're doing well. Well, no, if you look close enough you can see the underlying fear inside everyone. Everyone is in panic from the wrath of the dragon king!
I sighed and twirled the straw of my smoothie around my finger humming to myself. Mira was talking to me, but I wasn't really listening. I've been off in thought quiet a lot lately. "Lucy?" Huh? I looked up to see Mira giving me a worried gaze. "Are you okay? You have been spacing out a lot." I nervously waved my hands in front of my face "no I'm fine hehe..."
Mira nodded but it was obviously she didn't buy it. She went on to the back with some dishes to wash. I just sat and tried to process the past few days. "If I had just not given the order to shoot him down," my gaze drifted off to Natsu. He was lifting his bare muscled arm up and down with Asuka rapping her arms and legs around his arm, hanging on and giggling while he lifted it, lowered it, then lifted it again.
Natsu himself had a big smile on his face while he kept commenting saying how strong she is. She was just laughing and having fun while her parents ate at a table close to the scene and smiled as he played with her. "No I'm glad I gave the order to shoot him down." Otherwise he wouldn't be here. Who knows what kind of mental state he would be in with all that he's told me and shown me, not good.
I decided to go home early today. I was just so out of it. I grabbed my bag and said bye to Mira who asked me where I was going. I sighed "home, I'm not feeling so good today." She just nodded her head and waved goodbye. I left without another word to anyone.
It was beginning to feel like spring again. The breeze was cool but the weather was fairly warm. I think I'll take a walk for a bit. It's nice out anyway. I pushed the large guild doors open and walked down to the town. There were so many people with such happy faces despite what has happened. Magnolia has turned into a war zone. They don't even have any idea of what's going on.
I heard a small oof along with an impact against my lower leg. I looked down and saw a small boy with dirty brown hair and green eyes freckles dusted over his cheeks. His face was a little dirty and a little girl who was probably his little sister ran up next to him. I looked down at the boy, crouched down so only my feet touched and just looked. He seemed harmless, but when he looked up at me his eyes were angry.
"You!" I was shocked a little. I certainly wasn't expecting it. Now a lot of eyes were on us. He pointed a finger accusingly at me yelling "you're the freak dragon tamer!" My heart clenched in my chest. So that's what's wrong. I felt a little upset, sad, angry. I thought that the people have mostly gotten used to him. I guess hate just can't fade easily. This boy is a example of it.
He still held an angered gaze at me this whole time. He was talking but I couldn't hear him. I tuned him out. I could only just see his mouth moving. Words like: brat, and slap came to mind. 'I would never slap a child!' I mentally screamed.
I felt a sudden contact. Painful contact on my face, my cheek. The boy had slapped me hard across the face. I fell backward and landed on the dirty stone. A few people were shocked. Others said nothing and just watched. Then a few said things along the line of I deserve it. "She does deserve it" I looked back. The kid had said that. He had a satisfied smirk on his face. I couldn't believe it.
Then he picked up a rock. "You deserve all of it!" He threw the rock at me. I covered my face. I know it's just a kid but I can't hurt him and if I don't do anything the rock might hit my eye. Nothing but a quick breeze came even close. "You shouldn't throw things at people kid." I recognize that voice. I uncover my face and sure enough the sight of pink hair was enough. Natsu.
He looked angry. His glare was back and it was the one time I was glad to see it. He certainly never forgot how to do it though cause it was one of the worst ones I've seen.
"See this is what im Talking about!" The kid whined. "You destroy everything then you think you will be welcome here! Never!" I couldn't see Natsu's eyes. They're shaded by his bangs the air felt extremely uncomfortable though. It was much warmer.
"Listen kid," he got down to just above the kids level right in front of him. You could see the red aura radiating from him. A lady with the same hair and eyes who I think is the kids mother was trying to fight her way through the crowd, but she was being held back. I could see Natsu's eyes now, but I wish I didn't. They looked like you had massacred his whole family right in front of him. Anger. Despise.
"You very well know who my father is. The man hating dragon who hurts innocent people. Well boy, you think you have the right to just hurt someone like this. It makes you no better then my father." Natsu said darkly. The whole area kinda froze. It wasn't a good sign. I looked around at all the shocked faces. The boy was shaking like crazy. The mom finally got to him. She wasn't pleased with Natsu or her son's actions.
She bowed her head in apology and grabbed the boy who tried throwing more rocks but Natsu incinerated any that came close without touching them. "Not all of us think That you know?" Said a Voice from the crowd. That caught Natsu's attention. He looked at a woman with her daughter both had long light brown hair and brown eyes. The little girl's eyes were darker then her mother's but wow, beautiful. The woman smiled and the daughter giggled as the walked up to us.
"My daughter has always loved dragons. She was always so happy about them. Even after what they did she always said they could change one day and look at you. She was right." The woman gave us a sweet smile and Natsu returned it. I felt a gentle tug on my skirt and looked down. The little girl was making a grabbing motion with both hands to pick her up. I looked at the mom to see if it was okay and she nodded so I picked her up. She rapped her tiny arms around my neck for support and smiled.
"Can I tough your hair Natsu?" Natsu's cheeks flushed pink a little. "I-Uh sure?" He bent over a little and the girl pet him gently. I heard a soft small purr come from Natsu and the girl did to. She giggle and so did I. Natsu's cheeks became even more pink at this. "One more thing," the small girl began "can I have one of your scales?" I looked at Natsu. He chuckled and nodded. I was very curious to how he was going to do this. He pulled something out of his pocket. A necklace. It was a small white beaded necklace, but three guitar pick shapes were on it like charms. One black with pink markings on the left, one black with blue markings on the right, one black with red marks in the middle, Natsu's scale.
He looked nostalgically at the necklace in his palm. "This necklace means quite a lot to me. My mother gave it to me just before she died." He held out the necklace and the girl watched fascinated as he said the scale on the left was his mothers, the right his fathers, and the center was his. "You do well to take care of this, it's the only one of its kind." He said in a serious tone as he put it on her. She smiled brightly "I will, don't worry!"
We waved goodbye as they walked off to continue with their day. The girl smiling a lot and waving. Natsu grabbed my hand and tugged me with him. I yelped a little from the jerk, but turned and followed after him. "Why did you give that to her? I mean, it seems important to you so why give it to someone you barely know."
He stopped tugging me and looked over his shoulder back at me. I gasped a little. His eyes, not black, gold, a shiny, beautiful gold. "I could say the same thing to you. You gave me quite a lot when you first met me. We didn't know each other at all. I was the son of a murderer was all you knew. So why be so nice to me? Huh?" He had me there. I couldn't really answer that. Luckily he kept talking so I didn't have to.
"As of today they have all been trained in what i should teach them. The rest is up to them." He flashed me a grin "so let's go home. I'm going to beat you in chess this time!" I yelled running ahead. I smirked, 'yep still the same Natsu. I ran after him laughing as we ran carelessly down the mostly empty walk along the river as the suns rays began to set casting a beautiful golden glow. "Oh no you won't!"
Hey sorry for the late updated. Trying to tough through the flu. Mostly did but still recovering. Stay positive my friends!
