Note From Judge:
Hello! It was such a pleasure reading all 18 stories submitted in the Sci-Fi category. Every writer submitted an original world full of adventure and intrigue, so it was really hard to whittle it down. Just so you guys know what I was looking for, I judged on Blurb, Character Development, Plot, Diction, Grammar, Detail, Writing Style, and World-Building. A quick note to ALL of the contestants: These stories were very good, which means each entry's score was within a fraction of each other. A lot of stories didn't place because of excessive typos. Now without further ado: Honorable Mentions: I'd like to give a shoutout to these three stories for being incredibly imaginative. It was refreshing to read about new cultures and civilizations.
The 10th Circle - Abyss By: taivaan_sininen
Saurian Chronicles By: SpinyKyverna
Traveling Salesman: Astronomgonist By: Amaboo
Congratulations to all three of you lovelies!
Taking Third Place we have!:
OF SOLAR AND DARK by: crystaIIise
Review: The blurb was effective and inspired me to read more. The world is at war. Solars and Darks are separated, each wanting to wrest control from the other.
Sebestian, the son of the Darks' king, is dutiful and responsible. Edward, of the Solars, is loyal and protective over his brother, Teddy. Though these characters come from different belief systems, they both carry reluctance within them. They're both searching for their place in the world, and I love how this will eventually draw the two of them together. I really enjoyed the alternating Points of View in each chapter and that slap in chapter 1 took my breath away! Edward is believable in his hesitance to join the Resistance. That fall in the fifth chapter was heartbreaking, but they should've listen to Sebestian's warnings!Your attention to detail is excellent. I'd say, give your story an edit. You'll see that some detail is repetitive and unnecessary, which gets in the way of the action. While we're on the topic of editing: your plot and characters are what pushed this story to third place. Your typos, however, can get distracting. If you'd like more interaction and votes on your story, I'd recommend taking a little time to edit. (I would've given you first, to be honest. But those typos!)Your world-building was incredibly on point. I never questioned the setting in the scene because you crafted everything so well. From the flares of lights in the Solar section to the gap torn apart at the crust in Sebastian's world, you have a knack for storytelling. Thank you for giving me the pleasure of your story.
Congratulations Lovely! <3
Coming in at Second Place we have!!:
Mind The Gap by: JenniferJonnes
Review: The blurb was succinct, to the point, and effective. But it also had a humorous tone that compelled me. Good work.
What looks like a pothole is actually a dimensional rift. Poor stuttering Emmet. He accidentally trips into the hole and must brace for the adventure of a lifetime. Brock is a substitute teacher, and he doesn't love it. But he has a secret job that's pretty cool: chasing Nagra (the best way to describe them are space caterpillars that chew holes through different realities and space.) When Emmet falls through the rift, he joins up with Brock and various characters to catch Nagra. The world-building was such a delight. Everything from the green razorbacks and their slick excretions to the red bellies with their almonds scents, from the spotted blues and their slime to Sable, the fat, round creature with wings. You also raised the stakes well by giving your protagonists 30 hours to get the Nagra caught.Your descriptions and grammar were perfect. However, the story introduces a lot of characters in Chapter 2, and it's a bit confusing at first getting to know who is saying what. I know you included a cast of characters, but character descriptions throughout the story would help as well. I also think you can end your chapters with better cliffhangers. Give us that nudge to keep reading. All in all, there were hardly any mistakes and you brought the action immediately. Your strengths are in your dialogue and pacing. Great work.
Congratulations Lovely!! <3 <3
Annnd Finally!!! For Our First Place Winner!!!:
Power On by: amaricooke
Review: To be honest, I wasn't at all impressed with the blurb. It was a little all over the place. But I'm so glad I kept reading.
The Elders, a dynasty of wealthy adults in charge of sustaining life, are tyrants. They've created a new name for earth, Terra, and they choose who lives and who dies. They squash all sorts of rebellion. Yeah, these guys sound like winners. The story starts with Zula taking her exam. This exam determines how you'll contribute to society. If you fail, you die. I loved all of Zula's internal monologues; her fear and anxiety about possibly failing or losing loved ones came across as palpable.By incorporating the backstories for different "ranks" (Carmine, Beryl, Bisque, etc.), you've created a strong society where everyone plays a part. Iral was such a delight. From his opening line, "Hey, baby!" to the moment he and Zula are separated (thanks for bringing on the feels with that one, by the way.), I found myself rooting for him.I don't want to give too much away because I want readers to latch on to this story. There were little to no mistakes and you started with action that just didn't stop. My only criticism: there's a bit of "telling" in your story. Give us more "showing", those visceral gut punches that keep us reading more.Excellent work! Congratulations!
Congratulations Lovely!!! <3 <3 <3
