Chapter 10: Reality Check
The next day, Jane woke up to find Catherine sleeping beside her. It appears that she had covered her with a blanket and slept by her side all night.
"Thank you." Jane whispered. As if responding her, Catherine replied you're welcome and woke up after a while.
"Oh! You're awake! Morning, Cathy." Jane managed a smile at Catherine.
"Morning, Jane. Let's go downstairs. I think it should be breakfast now." Catherine invited. Jane accepted her invitation and they went down together.
"Oh, morning! Had you two had a good sleep? Bernard tried waking you two up but you two were out cold sleeping." Riki asked.
"Yeah. Thanks for asking. Where's my husband?" Catherine asked. Riki pointed to a man lying on the couch. Catherine let out a small giggle.
"What's wrong?" Jane asked.
"Nothing. It's just like him to sleep like that." Catherine replied.
After breakfast, Dean gathered everyone to appoint them their duties for the week. Yes, the week. A week has passed since Zach and Mini was thrown into this nightmare.
"Alright! Now, I shall announce who goes where and do what. Jane, Jack, Catherine and Max will go scavenging. Me, Dane and Riki will patch up all the defensive structures. The rest of you do the chores." Dean announced.
"Wait. Why am I the one doing the chores?" Bernard asked.
"Because your wife is going out to scavenge." Riki replied.
"I will take her place. She's not ready to face those zombies yet." Bernard put his point across bluntly.
"But-" Riki was cut off.
"Please. I don't want to lose her." Bernard insisted.
"Dear. Let me go. If I don't do this now, I might not have the chance to in the future. I want to talk to you in private. Come to our room later." Catherine walked off to her room.
Bernard then stomped off to his room in a fury.
*Knock!* "Cathy? Can I come in?"
"Come in." Bernard got into the room and found Cathy looking at a picture.
"Cathy, my darling. What are you looking at?" Bernard asked and put his arms over her shoulders.
What he saw was a picture of their family at the FunLand Amusement Park a few years ago.
"Dear, I know you care about my safety but if I don't do this now, when we meet Zach and Mini in the future, how am I supposed to protect them if they are in danger?" Catherine said softly.
"I will protect all of you. I promise." Bernard whispered.
"Don't. Let me go. I have to learn how to even though I am not that good of a fighter. I want to be able to protect myself. I need to go." Catherine tried to convince Bernard and she put her arms on his. "Honey....."
Bernard remained silent for a minute before coming to his final decision.
"Alright. You can go. I don't want to lose you but if you want to go, just go ahead. But you must be extra careful, your stamina is not that good so you can't run far. Just try to keep your distance from the zombies. Ask Jane to protect you if you need to." Bernard said.
"I will. Take care now, I'm leaving." Catherine said, grabbing her gun.
The scavenging group then left for San Francisco to gather supplies. "Jane, how did you cope with this after you were rescued by Jack?" Catherine asked.
"At first, I didn't really give a shit about anyone. I would emo at a corner of the room. Only source of entertainment is books on the shelf. Never thought I would have said this but I love books now. Back before this shit all started, I used to play truant and don't really study much." Jane giggled at the thought of those days.
"I see. To be honest with you, I am the same as you. I may not look like it but I am actually not that smart. In the end, I did regret it but now, it's too late for a chance to change. There is no returning to our way of life before. Neither is there a time loop to allow us to restart from the time we were going to make that mistake. That's why I have decided, from now on, I will strive to do my best to protect my loved ones. Let's do it together, Jane." Catherine let out her hand to invite Jane.
Eyes filled with tears, Jane accepted her hand and muffled a soft thank you. "Hey you two at the back! Get ready! We're reaching soon." Max shouted.
"Alright. We've arrived. Remember. No guns unless necessary. We don't want no trouble coming at us." Jack reminded the group. Everyone understood and took out their guns, fingers off the trigger.
