14 years later.

I rocked the baby in my arms as I stared at the memorial. It read:

Here we remember the sacrifice of Captain Nick Garland. He gave his life for his cause and for the people he loved. He will always be remembered as a hero.

I can't believe it had been fourteen years since the war. The new government had been working peacefully for thirteen of those fourteen years, making things easier between normal humans and the Changed. The normal humans actually took our story well when the Commander first broadcasted her message. Things moved so quickly that within months, the world was a better place.

"Are you alright, Tess?" Caleb said from behind me. He kissed me on the cheek. "How's our little son, Nick?" I smiled and passed the bundle over to his father.

"I was just telling him about his brave namesake," I said. I brushed my fingers on the memorial. "Isn't that right, Nick?" I was talking to the stone now. To me, I was actually talking to him...like he said I could. 

"I miss him too," Caleb said. "But I think he's proud of us. Look how far we've come." I smiled and flicked my finger at a candle at the base of the big stone. It lit up immediately.

"Come on," I said. "Let's go meet Edward and Emily for dinner. I think little Nick wants to see his cousin." I took Caleb's hand and we walked towards the car, leaving our past behind us, but never forgetting it's importance.

Omg! I finished it!!! It's over!!! I feel so sad!!!

So, Caleb and Tess married and had a little boy called Nick. I thought that was sweet. And do you remember Emily??? The girl with the painkiller power??? She married Edward so they had a happy ending in the end.
