Chapter 19- Nick

I had to rescue Edward. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't. Last night was my last try at the Commander to get her to change her mind but she didn't. I told Tess at training that I was going to rescue him tonight. I know I said to wait a few days but her dream was the last straw for me. I knew what they were doing now.

I left the training room in a hurry so I could find Cain. I didn't exactly like the man or trust him but he was my best chance at getting into the base.

I found him in the dining room playing cards with himself. I took a deep breath and sat at the table with him. He didn't react to me. "Cain, we need to talk," I said then winced at my own words. He couldn't talk. He lifted his head, his eyebrows raised. I realised that this was a sign for me to go on.

"I'm breaking into the Government base tonight. I need to know if you're definitely in. If you are, we need to make a plan." He bit the end of his pencil before scribbling something down on his notepad. '

Okay, don't expect me to be best buddies with you, Garland. I still hate you but I don't want to die. What do we do?' He wrote.

"I can steal a helicopter and fly it. I also know how to get into the base but can you turn us both invisible?" Cain rolled his eyes but nodded. With a flick of his wrist he turned invisible. At first I didn't know what he was doing but then I felt him touch my shoulder. I looked down at my hands and found I couldn't see them. I gasped in shock. Cain appeared beside me, grinning. Then wrote something down on his notepad. He said, the trick is to stay quiet. I nodded.

"All right then. Meet by the helicopter pad at eleven o'clock sharp," I said. He got up to leave but I caught his arm. "Cain, if you don't turn up, I will find you and kill you. Do you understand?" He shrugged and freed himself before staggering out of the dining hall. I stayed sitting where I was. Was this going to work? Or was I just going to get myself killed? I shook my head. It didn't matter if I died because I was trying to save someone.

"Nick?" A voice said behind me. I jumped out of my skin. "Sorry!" Caleb said. "I didn't mean to scare you."

"No, its fine Caleb. Its fine but you've got to stop doing that," I said. When I saw his face I asked: "What is it?"

"I want to come with you when you go and rescue Edward," he said.

"Caleb, you can't. Its going to be really dangerous and we need to move quickly. If we fail I don't want to be the one that explains to the Commander why her only son is dead. And anyway, I need you to look after Tess," I said. "The next few hours are going to be really hard for her."

"I know but I can be really helpful. I've been working so hard at my powers," he cried.

"I'm sorry, Caleb but-" I was cut off when the lights in the dining room started flickering and sparks were flying off them. Then they all cut out at the same time. "What the hell?"

"I got the trick with the electricity," Caleb said from the darkness. The lights flickered again and switched back on. "I can turn off all the lights if we get caught. They can't find us or catch us in the dark can they?" I stayed silent for a while. Could I risk taking Caleb?

"Look, fine you can go. But you have to do exactly what I say, understand?" I said firmly.

"Yes, I totally understand," Caleb said. "When do we leave?"

"Be at the helicopter pad at eleven," I replied. We both walked out of the room to get supplies ready.

I stood on the launch pad at eleven with Caleb. We had managed to get Tess into bed but it took us ages to convince her. She really wanted to go and rescue her brother but I reasoned with her that she hadn't got full control of her powers yet even if she made so much progress in training.

We were waiting for Cain to show up. Caleb was sure that he would come but I was having my doubts. Then we heard footsteps coming up from the stone steps. It was Cain looking as casual as usual. I gave him a glare. "You know, I said eleven," I growled. "Ten past eleven is not eleven." He only shrugged his shoulders and clambered onto the chopper behind me. I sighed. "Come on," I said to Caleb. "We have to make this quick otherwise your mum will stop us."

I jumped into the front while Caleb got into the back. I started up the engine and started setting up all the controls. I heard a shout from the steps and a guard ran towards us. To be honest, I don't know what he was trying to achieve by this because how could he stop a helicopter. We lifted into the air leaving the guard behind. I watched the lights of the landing pad disappear behind us. We flew over the hills in the pitch black. It was only a day ago that I was flying back from escaping the base with Tess and now I was finishing the job.

We landed a mile away from the base so they couldn't see us. I wasn't sure about their radar but I just had to hope that they wouldn't think anyone would attack the base. Caleb and Cain had changed into black combat gear like me. "Lets go," I said to them.

We ran through the woods silently so we wouldn't be heard. I stayed behind Caleb so he wouldn't lag behind us. We followed the bright lights of the base.

When we got to the end of the woods we waited till the patrols went passed before we ran to the door. I took out the guard and used his security card to gain access to the door. We slipped in to a wide corridor. "There will be no guards until we get near Edward, ok?" I whispered to Cain and Caleb. "Stay quiet and make sure you follow me. When I say, turn off the lights Caleb and stay guard while me and Cain grab Edward." They both nodded and followed me down the twisting maze of shiny white corridors. Caleb shivered.

"How did Tess survive in here? And what about her brother? He's been here even longer," he murmured under his breath. I glanced at him and put my finger to my lips. We were getting close now.

I stopped at a corner and glanced round. There were two guards outside the isolation room. From the way they were standing I knew that they were on high alert. I nodded at Caleb. He closed his eyes and the lights started sparking. Then there was a total black out. I watched the guards run down the corridor away from us. "Okay, change of plans," I said. "Caleb, tap the wall twice if someone comes. Cain, wait with him and turn him invisible. I'll go and get Edward." I crept down the corridor and punched in the pass code to the cell, surprised that they didn't change it.

The door slid open and revealed a person in the cell. He was battered and bruised all over. There were long slashes across his stomach which were bleeding freely. There was a cut on his head and his veins looked like they were black. The figure shifted his head a looked towards me. His face was almost unrecognisable. Swollen and black with bruises.

 It was Edward.
