They were basically taken our powers now. I slammed my hand on the glass box, screaming at Frost to let her go. Nick was just standing there, looking at his feet. I knew I couldn't openly ask him for help.
Suddenly I had a crazy idea. I tried to reach out with my mind to his, like he could. It was the first time I had tried telepathy and I wasn't particularly sure how to do it but I had to try, for the sake of Tess. I pictured two simple words in my mind: Help her. Nick didn't move. I concentrated harder and willed the words to leave my head. This time, Nick looked up at me, slightly shocked. "Please," I said in my mind. Nick pursed his lips then stepped towards Frost.
"Sir," he said calmly.
"What is it, Garland?" Frost said harshly, not taking his eyes off Tess in the box.
"I'm so not sorry about this," Nick said then swung his fist as hard as he could at Frost's head. He connected with a sickening crack and Frost crumpled to the floor. Dr. Brand stared at Nick in shock before he got knocked out too.
The scientists fell silent, their eyes wide with terror. The slight movement of a grey man's hand moving towards the alarm caught Nick's eye. "I wouldn't if I were you," Nick muttered. The man stopped and backed up away from the alarm. "Now, shut the experiment down and open the door," Nick ordered. They did what they were told.
I ran into the box and unclenched Tess's hands from he handles. She was barely conscious, her eyes open just a tiny bit. I picked her up and carried her out of the box to Nick. "What do we do now?" I asked him breathlessly.
"Which button is it to close the door to that box?" Nick growled at a lady with black hair. Her shaking hand pointed to a big black button. "Okay, all of you, in the box," Nick shouted. The frightened scientists scrambled inside and Nick pressed the black button. The door sealed shut. Nick knelt down and checked Frost's neck. "Damn it! The key isn't there," Nick said.
"Stop by Frost's quarters," I said.
"All right, let's go," Nick said. He took Tess from me as I might need to defend us. We left the weapons testing room and jogged lightly down the corridor. Nick led the way down the twisting corridors towards Frost's office. Suddenly Nick stopped and hid behind a corner, I did the same. "There are ten guards at the door to the office, all armed with drug guns. There is no way I can take them out," Nick whispered.
"What if I shield us?" I whispered back.
"No, you're not strong enough to hold it up for as long as I need, neither can you get there because of the bracelet. And anyway, how can I fight them from behind a shield?" Nick whispered.
"Where's the closest exit then?" I asked urgently.
"That way, there's a small fire escape," Nick said pointing in the opposite direction. "Why? We can't escape until we have got that security bracelet off of you."
"Nick, I need you to promise me something. Get my sister out of here. Do whatever it takes. Don't worry about me. I promised my parents that I'd look after her, and I will keep that promise. I'll help you escape but you have to promise to leave me here and keep my sister safe. I'm trusting you with the one thing I love, Nick. Protect her, please," I said to Nick seriously.
"Edward, I can't let you do this," Nick said. "I was ordered to bring both of you back."
"Well, the orders have changed," I muttered. I got up and walked away as quietly as I could. Nick followed, still carrying Tess.
"Edward, you have to rethink this," he said frantically. "I don't think you'd be doing anyone any favours by giving yourself up and I certainly don't think it would help Tess."
"This might be my one and only chance to get her out of here. I have to try," I said. Nick opened his mouth to speak again but then realised that I wasn't going to change my mind. I have to admit, part of me was scared out of my mind. I didn't want to stay here but I knew that I had to. If I got Tess out, then it didn't matter about me anymore. They couldn't use anything against me and at least she had a chance.
We walked in silence, avoiding the odd guard but strangely there seemed to be less around. I thought we were going to make it...then things started to go wrong. The lights suddenly turned red and an alarm went off, screaming in my ears. I knew that in a matter of minutes. Ten, twenty, maybe fifty guards would be on us.
Nick and I broke into a run to get to the exit as quickly as possible. We rounded a corner when Nick shouted "There!" The exit was ten metres in front of us. Then the security bracelet on my and Tess's wrist started beeping. I stopped dead in my tracks. "I can't go much further," I told Nick. "Get the bracelet off Tess and go." Nick nodded and set Tess down on the floor. He fumbled with the red disk but managed to fit it into Tess's bracelet. It clicked and fell apart on the floor. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Mistake.
"Stop them!" I heard Frost yell from behind me. I whirled around to see ten guards with Frost with them. They all had their drug guns trained on me. "Step away from the exit, Edward, there's a good boy," Frost said smoothly. "You don't have to do this. You come to me and I'll tell you everything you want to know. I won't hurt your sister. If you come with me, you'll be a hero." I glanced at Nick. He nodded at me.
I extended my arms towards the guards and my golden shield blew up around me, blocking off the corridor. "Shoot him!" Frost screeched. Ten bullets came flying after me but I managed to deflect them. They kept on coming, slowly pushing me back. The bracelet on my wrist started beeping faster as I got closer to the limits.
"Open the door!" I groaned at Nick through the effort of holding up the shield. He leaped into action, charging towards the door. He placed his hand on the wall and the blue line scanned it. The door slowly hissed open like it hadn't been used for a while. The cool, fresh wind rushed in, It had been a while since I had felt the wind. It felt good.
Nick scooped up Tess and looked at me. "I can't leave you, Edward!" He cried.
"You have to!" I screamed back at him, I was being pushed back all the time. "Keep her safe, Nick. Tell her...tell her I love her and I'm sorry. Promise me you'll keep her safe!"
"Edward-" Nick started.
"Just promise me!" Nick hesitated.
"I promise," he finally said.
"Now go!" I screamed. Nick backed out the door. I glanced one last time at my sister's face before my feet skidded past the perimeter line and I felt volts of electricity sprint down my spine.
My shield collapsed and I fell to the floor, writhing in pain. The electricity was almost unbearable. I felt someone grab my ankle and I got tugged back inside the limits. The pain immediately stopped but I was gasping.
"Get him out of my sight," Frost said angrily, he looked furious. "And get some people after Tess, I want her brought back here." I was lifted up and taken back down the corridor. I drifted into unconsciousness peacefully, knowing that I had got Tess away from this nightmare and that she'd had a chance.
