THE EVENING STARTED PEACEFULLY.
Bucky and Seven were having dinner, the conversation light and relaxed. But as often happened, a comment led to a memory, and soon they found themselves treading the treacherous waters of their past.
"Papa, when are you gonna let me go to school?" Seven asked, pushing her food around on her plate.
He paused. The sudden question scared him. "You can't go Sev," He said, beginning to eat again.
Seven scoffed. "Why the hell not?"
"Watch your language Sev." He sharply said. Bucky sighed, trying to find the right words. "Sev, it's because we need to stay safe. HYDRA is still out there, and we can't let our guard down."
"But it's been months, almost a year," Seven said, frustration creeping into her voice. "I just want to have a normal life, make friends, and not worry about them finding us. Why can't we just settle down and be like everyone else?"
Bucky's expression hardened slightly, the weight of their past heavy on his shoulders. "It's not that simple, Sev. HYDRA is dangerous. They'll never stop looking for us. We have to be cautious."
"I'm tired of being cautious!" Seven snapped, her eyes filling with tears. "I'm tired of running and hiding. I want to live my life! I'm tired of being teased just because I'm the weird girl that no one ever see's at school! Because you know what? I don't even go to school!"
"I homeschool you—"
"Yeah, well, I want to be normal!"
"Well we're not normal!"
"Well I wanna be!"
Bucky's own frustration bubbled to the surface. "You think I don't want that for you? You think I don't want us to have a normal life? But the reality is, we can't afford to be careless. This is about keeping you safe."
"Maybe if you had fought harder back then, we wouldn't be in this mess!" Seven shouted, immediately regretting the words as they left her mouth. (GUYS I FEEL BAD FOR WRITING THAT)
Bucky's face fell, hurt and anger mixing in his eyes. "Sev, that's not fair. I do everything I can to protect you."
Seven's tears spilled over, her voice trembling with emotion. "Maybe it's not enough." (GUYS I REALLY REALLY SUPER DUPER FEEL BAD)
The argument had reached a peak, and before Bucky could respond, Seven turned on her heel and ran to her room, slamming the door behind her. Bucky stood there, his heart pounding and his mind racing with regret. He hadn't meant for things to escalate like this.
He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. After a few minutes, he decided to check on her and try to make things right. He knocked softly on her door. "Sev? Can we talk?"
There was no response. He knocked again, a little louder this time. "Sev, please. I'm sorry. Let's talk."
Still, there was silence. Bucky felt a knot of worry form in his stomach. He opened the door slowly, only to find her room empty. The window was open, and a cool breeze blew the curtains gently.
Panic gripped him as he realized she had run away. "Sev!" he called out, rushing to the window and looking out into the darkness. There was no sign of her. His heart raced, and a cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
Bucky ran outside, calling her name. "Sev! Sev, where are you?" His voice echoed in the quiet village, but there was no response. He checked the nearby streets, asking a few neighbors if they had seen her, but no one had.
Desperation set in as he ran through the village, checking all the places he thought she might go. The park, the market, even the little bookstore she loved so much—she was nowhere to be found. The minutes stretched into an agonizing hour, and Bucky's fear grew with each passing moment.
He finally returned home, his mind racing with worry and fear. The possibility of HYDRA finding her was a dark cloud that loomed over his thoughts. He couldn't bear the idea of losing her, of her being taken back into that nightmare.
Bucky paced the living room, trying to think of where she might have gone. His eyes landed on the family photos they had taken together, the happy moments that seemed so distant now. Tears welled up in his eyes as he thought about how much she meant to him.
Unable to contain his emotions any longer, Bucky sank to the floor, his body trembling as he sobbed. He buried his face in his hands, the tears flowing freely. "Please, Sev, be safe," he whispered through his sobs. "You need to be safe..."
The weight of his fear and guilt pressed down on him. He had tried so hard to protect her, to shield her from the darkness of their past, but in doing so, he had driven her away. The thought tore at his heart, each sob wracking his body with pain.
The memories of HYDRA haunted him, the experiments, the torture, the loss. And now, the fear that they could still reach out and take the most precious thing in his life—his daughter—was unbearable. He had fought so hard to keep her safe, to give her a chance at a normal life, but now it felt like it was slipping through his fingers.
Bucky's thoughts raced back to the argument, replaying every word, every moment. He had wanted to protect her, but maybe he had underestimated her strength. She had been through so much, and he had to trust that she could handle the truth. But now, it seemed too late.
His tears continued to flow, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he cried out his fear and frustration. The house, usually a sanctuary, felt cold and empty without her. The silence was deafening, each minute without her a sharp reminder of what was at stake.
"I'm sorry, Sev," he whispered again, his voice hoarse. "I'm so so sorry..."
He knew he couldn't stay in this state of despair. He had to find her, to bring her home and make things right. With a deep, shaky breath, Bucky forced himself to stand. He wiped his tears, though his eyes were still red and puffy. He needed to be strong, for her sake.
Bucky took a moment to gather his thoughts. Where would she go? He thought about their conversations, the places she liked to visit, the spots that brought her comfort. He had to think like her, to understand her mindset in this moment of distress.
He checked the time, realizing that the night was growing late. He couldn't let her stay out there alone, vulnerable to the dangers he had tried so hard to protect her from. His heart ached with the thought of her being scared, lost, or worse.
Determined, Bucky grabbed a flashlight and stepped back out into the night. He would search every inch of the village if he had to. He couldn't rest until he knew she was safe.
As he walked through the darkened streets, calling her name and scanning every shadow, Bucky's mind kept drifting back to the moment she had run from him. He vowed to himself that if he found her, he would be more open, more understanding. He couldn't let his own fear drive a wedge between them.
The village was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of nightfall providing little comfort. Bucky's voice echoed as he called out for her, each unanswered call tightening the grip of fear around his heart.
"Seven, please," he called, his voice breaking. "Please come back."
He passed by familiar landmarks, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. The little bridge over the creek, the old church, the small park where they often sat and talked—all were empty.
After hours of searching, Bucky's strength began to wane. He returned home, hoping against hope that she had come back while he was out looking for her. But the house was still and empty, a hollow reminder of his greatest fear.
He sank back down on the couch, his head in his hands, trying to hold on to the hope that she was okay.
As he sat there, tears still streaming down his face, Bucky prayed silently for her safety. He prayed that she would find her way back to him, that he would have the chance to hold her again and tell her how much she meant to him.
BUCKY STILL SAT ON THE COUCH, his head in his hands, consumed by worry and exhaustion. He was now thinking about what he could do, what the hell could Bucky Barnes do. He had spent hours searching for Seven, calling her name into the empty night, but she had not answered.
Just as he was about to stand and resume his search, he heard the faint sound of footsteps outside. His heart leapt in his chest, and he rushed to the door, flinging it open. There, standing on the porch, was Seven, looking weary and remorseful.
"Sev!" Bucky cried, his voice breaking with relief and anger. He stepped forward, pulling her into a tight embrace. "Oh, thank God, my baby. You're safe."
Seven clung to him, her own tears flowing freely. "I'm sorry, Papa. I didn't mean to scare you."
Bucky's emotions were a tumultuous mix of relief, anger, and overwhelming love. He held her close, his body trembling as he sobbed. "I was so scared, Sev. I thought I lost you. I thought HYDRA had taken you.
Bucky ranted. And he still wondered where Sev inherited that from.
Seven hugged him tighter, her voice muffled against his chest. "I'm sorry. I just... I didn't know what to do. I was so upset." She felt bad that she didn't know how to control her emotions yet.
Bucky pulled back slightly, his eyes red and swollen from crying. "Don't you ever do that to me again, Sev! Do you understand?"
She nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, papa..."
"Sorry is not enough!" He took a deep breath, trying to steady his voice. "You can't just run off like that. It's dangerous. You scared me half to death."
Seven looked down, guilt and shame written all over her face. "I know. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."
Bucky's anger flared again, but it was tempered by the deep love he felt for her. "Do you have any idea what I went through? I thought something terrible had happened to you. I was so worried."
"I'm sorry," Seven repeated, her voice small and filled with regret.
Bucky cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to look at him. "I love you, Sev. More than anything. But you can't just run away when things get tough. We have to face these things together."
Seven nodded, tears still streaming down her cheeks. "I understand, Papa. I promise I won't do it again."
Bucky sighed, pulling her into another hug. "We need to talk about what happened. About why you ran."
Seven nodded against his chest, feeling the weight of her actions. "I feel like, I don't know how to control my emotions. I don't know how to react when I'm mad, or sad. So I just ran."
Bucky took a deep breath, his anger slowly dissipating. Bucky understood. Hell, she was born in HYDRA. They didn't really teach her much but to kill. "I get it, Sev."
Seven pulled back slightly. "How do I do it."
Bucky nodded, his heart heavy but resolute. "I don't know, we're learning together, but I do know that you have to promise me something."
"What?" Seven asked, her voice trembling.
"Promise me that you won't run away again. No matter how upset or scared you are, come to me."
Seven nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "I promise, Papa. I won't run away again."
Wanting to comfort her, he led her over to the old record player in the corner of the room. It was a relic from another era, one of the few things that had survived their time in Romania. It was left by the other people who used to live in this apartment. He put on a record, and soft, slow music began to fill the room.
Sev looked at him, confused. "What's this for?"
Bucky smiled gently. "Let's dance," he said softly, extending his hand to her.
Sev hesitated for a moment before taking his hand. He led her to the middle of the room, and they began to sway gently to the music. Sev rested her head against his chest, her arms wrapped around his waist.
Bucky held her close, his hand on her back, the other gently holding her hand. They moved slowly, the music guiding their steps. For a while, neither of them spoke. The silence was filled only with the soft strains of the music and the quiet beating of their hearts.
"Where did you even go?" He asked as they swayed.
It took her a minute to respond but she did. "I wandered."
Bucky chuckled. That was a Sev thing to do.
As they danced, Bucky could feel the tension in Sev's body begin to melt away. He tightened his hold on her, wanting her to know that she was safe and loved. The rhythm of the music and the warmth of their embrace created a cocoon of peace around them.
Sev finally broke the silence. "I'm really sorry, papa," she murmured, her voice filled with guilt and sorrow.
Bucky's voice was gentle as he replied, "I know, Sev. Just promise me you'll talk to me next time, okay? Running isn't something you do to get away from things that are hard, y'know? You have to face it."
"But we're running right now."
He looked down at her and rubbed her nose playfully. "No, Sev, we're dancing."
"Papa! You know what I meant." She said back, resting her cheek back on his lower chest.
He sighed, running his hand through her hair as they kept swaying. "That's different."
"It's not."
"It's is." He told her. "You don't run away from me. We stay together, okay?"
"Okay, papa." she said, understanding him.
They continued to dance, the music a soothing balm to their frayed nerves. Bucky couldn't help but think back to all the times he had danced in a similar way with his own mother, feeling safe and loved in her arms. He hardly remembered it, it was a foggy memory but it was there. Now, he was the one providing that comfort and security for his daughter.
As the song played on, Bucky felt Sev relax even more in his arms. He could sense that she was on the verge of letting out all the pent-up emotions she had been holding inside. He kissed the top of her head, silently reassuring her that it was okay to let go.
Sev's grip around his waist tightened, and her breathing became more ragged. Bucky could feel her tears soaking through his shirt. He held her even closer, his own heart breaking for her. He knew that sometimes, the only way to heal was to let everything out.
"I'm here, my baby." He said softly, kissing the top of her head. "You can cry, it's okay."
With those words, Sev's resolve broke. She began to sob, her whole body shaking with the force of her emotions. Her arms tightened around Bucky's waist, holding on to him as if he were her lifeline. Bucky continued to sway gently to the music, his hand rubbing soothing circles on her back.
He hummed softly, the vibrations from his chest a comforting presence for Sev. He didn't try to stop her tears or shush her cries. He knew that she needed this, needed to release all the fear, guilt, and sorrow that had been building up inside her.
They swayed together, the music a soft backdrop to Sev's sobs. Bucky's heart ached for her, wishing he could take away all her pain. But he knew that all he could do was be there for her, hold her, and let her know that she was not alone.
Minutes passed, and slowly, Sev's sobs began to quiet. Her grip on Bucky loosened slightly, though she still clung to him. Bucky continued to hum, his voice a steady, calming presence.
When Sev finally spoke, her voice was a mere whisper. "I'm so sorry, papa. I feel so bad. I'm so sorry."
Bucky kissed the top of her head again. "I know, Sev. It's okay. You have to come to me next time, make sure to come to me."
Sev nodded against his chest, her tears beginning to subside. They continued to sway to the music, the room filled with a sense of peace and understanding.
As the song neared its end, Bucky held Sev a little tighter, grateful for this moment of connection. He knew that there would be more challenges ahead, more moments of fear and uncertainty. But he also knew that as long as they had each other, they could face anything.
The record player's needle lifted, and the music stopped, but Bucky and Sev continued to hold each other. They danced as if they had nothing to lose. It was just the two of them and this one cruel world. Bucky knew he was gonna protect her from this world, like he had tried so much before.
Bucky pulled back slightly and looked down at Sev, her tear-streaked face looking up at him with a mixture of love and gratitude. He brushed a strand of hair from her face and smiled.
"I love you, Sev," he said softly. "So much, please never forget that."
"I love you too, papa," she replied. "You better not forget that either."
Bucky chuckled a bit. "Okay, Sev, I won't."
