5. THE PERFECT ELF
I didn't know the time but by checking the sky from my window I realised it was just the break of dawn. I was energized but still weak from hunger. My tummy gave an angry rumble. Hearing that, the fairies got alarmed and started making squeaky noices. 'Shh...be quite. It's nothing. Stop making a fuss' I said. The fairies were still red in the face but calmed down eventually. 'Why are the fairies making such a scene' I heard someone talk from behind. I turned so fast, I felt my neck crick a bit. Daemeon was standing there wearing a battle armor, sword on his belt and a bow and arrow behind his back. 'Nothing. Nothing at all my...lord.?'
I said quickly almost inaudible. 'Wha- What are you doing here?' I asked. 'I heard screechess, so I just came to check' he said looking at the fairies kindly. The female fairies were swooning at the him and flying to him, handing him small flowers. Then he looked to me and threw something at me and surprisingly I caught it. It was an apple. It looked so lucious and red.
'I- thank you. It's really thoughtful of you' I said thankfully. 'I figured you might need it' he said looking straight at my eyes and after awhile gave me a side smile and walked away. He smiled at me.... That truly was a gorgeous smile... I smiled to myself, blushing so hard that I believed would stain my cheeks red forever.
That apple surprisingly made my stomach full. I walked down to a big garden where there were three Elvish ladies sitting elegantly down a white bench. Emily was sitting with them and I occupied the seat next to her.
Emily was bouncing up and down excitedly. 'First class is Elvish manners. I'm going to nail this round. And did you see the boy elves at the training ground...? They are soo.... gorgeous. A lady called Mrs Aquailean is our mentor. I've heard she's pretty strict so you better be mannered right now' said Emily. I was feeling green. What was I thinking?? I cannot learn Elvish ways...they look so complicated.
Suddenly a woman taller than anyone of us stridded towards us with a heavy book. She placed the book lightly at the table and turned to me and Emily. 'Human... never taught one of their kinds before in my lifetime and I'm 560 years precisely' she said. I and Emily looked at each other staring. 560 years old??!! She looks so young...
' I forgot to tell you, elves don't age and 560 is really young for an elf' Emily said. Oh boy... I wonder how old Daemeon is...
'So ladies... You have been gathered here for learning the elvish maiden manners. It's complicated but...when learned properly it will turn you to a more different person. And I would appreciate if the lady Westfire would sit up straight just like her friend lady Clitch here' she said waving her hand at Emily. Emily turned beet red. Well I guess meeting Luthiann yesterday did have some plus points.
'Now you should be graceful in every thing you do... Now if you ladies would stand up. No! Don't jump up lady Westfire...but slowly and purposefully' said lady Aquailean to Em but nodding at my direction.
It's quite easier than I thought. 'Now ladies... If you would line up. Yes. In height order wise. No lady Clitch should stand in front of lady Westfire. Yes the other lady elves in front of them. I turned to look at Em but she looked disappointed and red. I'll talk to her after this. 'Now ladies I would like you to walk...yes...very good lady Westfire with your hand clasped in front of you. Excellent. Now all of you sit down. I have brought honey crackers and herb tea'. Emily lit up and looked up at me at the mention of food. A large gold platter of some biscuit like things were brought in front of us and a teapot filled with some kind of green liquid...
'Now ladies don't bow down too much to extract one cracker. Ah look at lady Clitch she's doing it perfectly yes. Lady Clitch do show us how to drink the tea' said Aquailean to me. The other elves and Emily looked at me.
'Umm...ok' I said and I, careful not to bow to much, took a tinsmy cup that was in the tray and poured the green tea onto it. I managed not to spill and to my great surprise the other elves and Aquailean started to applaud gently, like hitting their fingers at their wrists. I smiled politely at them and looked at Emily but she ignored me. I never thought this day would come when Emily would ever be jealous of me. I'm not like proud of myself but I feel happy and bad all at the same time.
We continued to learn to speak and mingle like a proper elf. Not too loud not too soft...Just mildly like the breeze. Next was the dance lesson. Ah... My worst nightmare. I was like the worst dancer to exist. Emily knows that so she.....smirked at me. I don't know what her problem is. But I ignored that and was determined to do my best.
Aquailean began 'The elf who wants to have a dance with you shall bow down first. You shall curtsy slowly and then only could he get up. You shall put your right hand on his right hand and after he grabs your waist you should put your left hand on his shoulders. The lady should never try to get close. If the GentleElf wants you close he shall pull you in then that's your choice whether to allow yourself to fall to his arms or not. When the music begins...you should sway your hips slowly and then your right leg out right leg in and left out, left in, so on. Twirl...then when the GentleElf touches your back securely, dip backwards and slowly get up. After that just follow your companion's lead' she said and made dummy like elves to appear on the ground. We stood opposite our doll companions.
And started to follow our advised plan. I never thought I'd say this but I really enjoyed it.
It was lunch time. Me and Emily yet again got an invite from the king. The elf maids helped me into a pale yellow robe and tied my hair. I went to Emily's room and saw her trying out the dance that Aquailean had taught. 'It was a pretty fun class, wasn't it?' I asked her. 'Yes...yes it was' she said coldly. I got upset at the tone but I came near the bed and sat down.
'How's the dance going?' I asked, 'Good' she replied, ' If you don't mind I need to get ready so I'd appreciate if you'd go out' she said cruelly. I got up immediately and went to the door. I turned back at her and said 'Admit it. Your jealous. You got jealous when I got the credit for something you thought you could do better. I thought you were better than this. Instead of being happy for me your just trying to throw me down'. With that I walked out of her room.
I sat at the table near Luthiann. She smiled at me like an old friend. I returned it back graciously. 'How was the manners class my dear' Faeranduil asked me. 'It was really entertaining and informative' I said gracefully. He smiled at me approvingly. 'Where is Daemeon if I may ask?' I asked him. 'Oh Daemeon is out at the training grounds proping up the dolls and all' he said smiling.
When I looked at the food laid down, today I saw meat. Faeranduil might have seen me struggle with the thought of only vegetables to eat. Surely they did not eat any of the stew and steak on the table.
It was quite an enjoyable lunch. After that Luthiann gave me and Emily a pair armor to wear.'So your going to teach us combat' I asked her. 'Yes. And believe me I will not treat you kindly' she said jokingly, I laughed and Emily smiled. Emily and I were still not on talking terms.
I went to my room to trie on the armor given to me. It was all silver and blue and fabulous. I tried it on and tied my hairy into a messy knot. Yes... I never knew an armor would make me look..... different from how I look now.
I rushed outside and met Emily. She was wearing a similar armor. When she saw me, she ignored me. I heaved sadly. I never felt so lonely. She might be a self absorbed Diva. Stubborn and annoying. But she was my friend and I really miss her.
Luthiann met us at the castle gate and lead us to the back. There she lead us to a big stadium like ground with fighting dummies and tree trunks that stood as bullseye. There were many men and women fighting bare handed, with swords and many were shooting arrows at the bullseye. Their fighting skills were just so elegant.
'Now have you ever fought before?' Luthiann asked turning to me and Em. "No" said both of us in unison, yet still not looking at each other.
'Right then...I will teach you the basic 'elvish' hits and punch'. We positioned ourselves just as Luthiann had asked to. Many curious elves were watching us. She brought a tall slim muscular elf towards her and said 'Here we have Airen. Today he and I will be showing you a small duel'.
The elf called Aerin looked at me and winked. I quickly turned my head to Luthiann, blushing. Aerin and Luthiann positioned themselves. Everyone stood round us to watch. Aerin flexed his muscles. Beside me I heard many women including Emily breath heavily.
Not gonna lie but he looks really good looking. Aerin jumped at Luthiann. But she ducked gracefully and back up again. And from behind she tried to hit him behind the head, but he caught her wrists and pulled her close. Wow... he's trying to hit on her just like he started to do to me. I heard Emily moan slightly. But Luthiann clearly not interested wrenches her hand free and jumped at his shoulders and pulled him forcefully to the ground.
She held him there for a minute but he kicked free. 'Well thats all' she said clapping her hands to get all of our attention. The other elves nodded and continued their training. Aerin fisted at his chest and walked away but he turned to look at me for a second. I felt goosebumps rise to my cheeks. I then watched him walking to the forest.
Luthiann showed us some simple hitting and pitching but not all the complicated ones. Later she picked up a bow and a quiver full of arrows. She came to Emily and said 'I'll teach you shooting'. 'And I'll go rest for a while' I said when I turned to leave she stopped me and said 'No your going to be trained by Daemeon. And there he is just in time'. I turned my head quickly and cricked my neck...again.
Daemeon was stridding towards us wearing the same armor he wore in the morning. He completely ignored the ladies who were swooning at him. Emily coughed slightly. But I didn't mind her. My heart was beating so fast that my chest hurt. 'You ready?' Daemeon asked me. 'Yeah I am' I said strongly not to sound goofy. He nodded approvingly. And he asked me to follow him. I turned to look at Emily who was grinning without looking at me.
Daemeon took me to a forest clearing where there was a bullseye kept at the centre. He gave me the bow and arrows. I took it not knowing what to do. He shook his head and helped me to hold the bow properly and taught me how to adjust the arrows.
I did it correctly in the first try and waited for him to compliment me. But none came. He was teaching me on how to position myself while holding a bow and while getting ready to shoot. It was a bit hard for me to concentrate when he was standing so close to me. I pulled my string with an arrow to shoot. 'No. No your holding it in the wrong position' he said and held my hand steadying it from trembling. I looked at him and he turned to face me. OMG...his face is literally inches away from me. I was able to see the minute freckles on his face and I began to admire his pure white eyes. Surprisingly he didn't turn his face from me, he was staring at my eyes too.
I don't know how long we looked at each other. But it was burning my face so I pulled myself away reluctantly. 'I- ah. I'm getting quite tired now' I said to him, without looking at him. He looked up at the sky and said 'No wonder...it is already getting late' he said sighing. ' We'll continue tomorrow' he said and walked back to the castle and me following behind him.
I couldn't sleep the whole night. Thinking about Daemeon was making me hot in the face. He really is handsome. And then again the face of Aerin popped into my head. Wow... I'm in love with too hot elves.
Three days passed. The same routine was carried out. Manners class in the morning all day and combat classes in the afternoon. Daemeon still taught me shooting but this time he kept his distance. I didn't see Aerin after our first meeting. I never in my dreams thought I'd be sad over two boys... Now I get why Emily was bawling and crying when Josh broke up with her....
