Part II: Selfishness

As they walked across the trees silently on their feet, Tadashi kept a vigilant eye on all the direction. The sun was shining hiding behind the clouds, sweat dripped from Daiso's eyebrows as he wiped it with his sleeve. They knew nothing about the demonic creatures but if they hurt them they hurt the creatures back.

The forest ended on a high cliff. Tadashi stepped on the edge of the cliff and looked at the land below. There lied the massive fortress, it was grey rooftop over white walls. Captured by none other than the warrior Miyuki Masamoto. The daughter of a general who was forced to flee Kyoto province because of her unyielding to Daimyo Kamakura.

Tadashi motioned Daiso to step downwards.

The journey down was short as Tadashi took Daiso through a shortcut. They didn't talk much because it would be disrespectful to do so. Tadashi wondered if he should've bought more men and women with him, he was also calculating ways to secure the fortress better after taking a look at it. Tadashi was a legendary warrior who was defeated only once by no other than Miyuki Masamoto herself.

They reached the village and Daiso took a step forward when they heard the growling again. The infected were already spreading their disease. He told Daiso to get up on the roof on the house and they carefully jumped over the houses, inching towards the castle.

Once they reached the magnificent building, Tadashi said,

"They probably won't open the main door." He looked at the wall, "Take aim just at that end of the rooftop, here tie this cloth to it so they know who we are." He removed the bandana from his head and tied it around the arrow. Daiso took stance and in the humid, hot climate he panted a little but inhaled and stretched the bowstring. Tadashi watched the boy concentrate, he believed with proper vigilance and training Daiso might prove to be a capable archer.

Daiso released the arrow and it went flying up into the air, rotating and when it reached its maximum height it began to fall down. Daiso's grin at his shot turned to a sad face as he watched the arrow fall short of the rooftop. He looked at his Master. But Tadashi was angry, he was happy.

"The arrow didn't reach the rooftop." Daiso said apologetically.

"It wasn't meant to. There is a moat between the castle and its walls. If we shot straight up the arrow would've fallen in the moat. Good shot." He complimented; Daiso grinned again.

After a little while, Daiso saw a person climb up to the rooftop of the castle and his figure looked as if he was taking aim. Then in an instant an arrow made its way towards them, it lodged just on the side of Tadashi. The man took out the arrow and read the paper attached to it.

"Take the walls, all gates will remain closed." Daiso read in his mind.

"But that's impossible! How can we scale an entirely plain wall?" He asked,

"This." Tadashi removed an iron grapple hook from inside his kimono. It had two curved hooks at the front and a rope tied firmly at the end. Tadashi climbed down the roof and ran towards the castle. Daiso followed. Walking on the ground was fearful, they could still hear those wretched creatures screaming in the distance, demanding flesh, and bones.

Tadashi stopped at the walls, he coiled the rope around his forearm and threw the grapple into the air. It latched on the wall as Tadashi tugged it. It held.

"Cover me." Tadashi said to Daiso.

He began to climb up the wall, slowly. Daiso looked around. Tadashi reached the grapple hook and used it to scale the rest of the wall. Daiso was feeling dizzy, the lack of water was killing him. He looked up for a second and instantly there came an ear-piercing howl. Daiso stunned as he heard the cry, it was very humane but also demonic. He looked down to see the creatures gathering all around him. Daiso began to shiver. They were not stopping, running towards him to eat his eyes out. He took out an arrow from the quiver, his hands shaking from thirst. He aimed at the zombie but they very close, he could smell them. He decided to give in.

'Let them eat me, I'm no good anyways.' He thought and closed his eyes. Then a whistling sound came in as the zombie's head split into half. Daiso opened his eyes to see a man's brain flying out of his skull as he went down.

"Grab the hook!" Tadashi screamed as he fired another arrow from the wall.

A sudden rush of adrenalin came over Daiso, no he didn't want to die. He wanted to live, he wanted to free his mother. He grabbed the hook, flung it, and climbed the wall. He looked down to see hundreds and thousands of dead-looking people screaming and howling for his blood. For his flesh. They wanted to eat him, his heart and liver. Daiso jittered.

"Don't look at them! Daiso you can do it!" Tadashi screamed.

Daiso closed his eyes and looked away then he grabbed the hook embedded in the wall and climbed up the wall. This was madness, whatever it was.
