Chapter 11: Night Ambush

Soon, the sun began to set once again...and things just kept getting worse for the Wither Team. The storm that got them on the island in the first place started moving towards the island, and it's only a matter of time before the rain starts pouring down. Of course, no one planned on getting soaking wet in their sleep that night. "That...doesn't look good." Eden said. "What do we do?" Ham asked. "I don't know, but there's no way I'm sleeping in that." Petra replied. "None of us can sleep in that." Witherstorm retorted. "But we already failed at building a shelter, it's not like we can just whip one up really quickly or...pull one out of our butts." Wither Sickness nodded in agreement, and took a swift glance at the dark gray clouds that were looming over the island. "Well, you'd be happy to know that when I was searching for food this morning, I found out that the island has a hill that extends it higher. And said hill has a pretty deep hole in the side of it that would make a pretty good shelter for the night." He said. A bright flash of lightning sliced through a sky, and the rumbling of thunder got stronger as light drops of rain started to fall. "Lead the way." Eden said to Wither Sickness. And then they were off once again, hoping that this shelter would be enough to keep them safe for the night.

Some time later...

After walking through the jungle for a bit, it became pitch black...and the rain came down hard, much like tiny bullets. Everyone started to pick up the pace, though they couldn't see very well...and at some point they started to wonder if this temporary shelter really existed. "We've been walking through the rain for too long now, Wither Sickness!" Ham complained. "Where's this dang shelter?"
"It was pretty far back, but we should be there soon now." Wither Sickness replied, somewhat annoyed by Ham's whining. "I hope we are, I don't want Cloud to catch a chill." Petra said, gesturing to the shivering pup that was riding on her back. "That's a good point." Eden said. "Let's move faster." For a while, they speed walked across the muddy turf...until the rustling of leaves was heard nearby. "What was that?" Witherstorm asked, quickly freezing in his tracks. Eden raised a paw as a gesture for everyone to stand still, before closing her eyes and twitching her ears...listening for more movement for a bit, until she caught a familiar scent. "Oh no..."
"Not even a good beating can drive you away, eh?" The gang directed their attention to the trees, and a flash of lighting revealed Archie along with an army of ferrets standing on the branches with tiny makeshift weapons in their paws. "We're on your territory, aren't we?" Ham asked nervously. The sable ferret nodded slowly. "We don't want any trouble." Eden said, sternly. "We just need to pass through here to get to shelter."
"Well, I'm sorry to say that you should've went on some other path." The voice belonged to Kane this time, who was coming out of the bushes along with the rest of the tribe. "Passing through or not, you're still intruders. So we won't let you go so easily. ATTACK!!!" With that final order, the tribe was off...swinging on the branches of trees and scurrying through the mud. The gang immediately started running as the rain poured down harder, only making it harder to see...as well as run without slipping. The ferrets in the trees attacked from above, throwing tiny spears and using slingshots to their advantage...while the ones on the ground nipped and scratched at everyone's heels. "We're getting closer, I can feel it!" Wither Sickness shouted over the commotion. Eden flinched, upon feeling a spear get stuck in her shoulder. "We better be!"
"Guys! Slow down, please!" Ham shouted. He was, unfortunately, falling behind...and was running slow enough for the ferrets to grab the legs of his pants. Shaking them off, the tabby cat sprinted as hard as he could...until a coconut fell down right in front of him. And before he could take off running again, another one fell. And another, and another, and another, and eventually he was surrounded by coconuts...causing him to stop flinching and look up at the ferrets that threw them. "Ha! You missed me!" At least that's what he thought, until one massive coconut landed smack dab on his paw. Yowling in pain, Ham held on to his stinging paw and hopped backwards...soon stumbling into his teammates, causing them to fall flat into the mud. "Ham, c'mon!" Petra said, annoyed that they all lost their footing. "I'm sorry! I'm weak from hunger, okay?!" Ham protested. They scrambled back to their feet, upon hearing a battle cry sound off behind them...only meaning that the tribe was getting closer once again. "Oh, no you don't!" Kane shouted from behind. He launched himself onto Eden's back, causing her to fall back over again due to the impact of the badger's body. Not wanting to fight on this stormy night, Eden rolled on her backside...and attempted to crush Kane under her weight, or at least give him a disadvantage in winning. But when she noticed the rest of the tribe approaching, and felt Kane getting close to being free, she snarled ferociously as her eyes and stripes began to glow a pale yellow color...and two Light Element symbols appeared on both sides of her head. "Supernova!" She announced. And a immensely bright flash of light managed to blind Kane and his tribe long enough for Eden to escape and catch up with her team. When his vision adjusted, Kane immediately noticed that the Wither Team was nowhere in sight. "Blasted little buggers!" He shouted, slamming his crystal crown into the mud out of anger. "Hey, Kane." The large badger directed his attention to one of his tribe members. "Check out who was sitting out in the bushes watching the whole thing." The ferret pushed forward Bucky, who looked uncomfortable and somewhat defeated...rather than ready for anything, like he always is. "Uh huh, and why exactly were you only watching, instead of helping us?" Kane asked. The white ferret averted his new leader's gaze. "I know I said that I'm with you guys now...but I just couldn't do it." He explained in a soft tone. "Deep down, they're still my friends. And I can't see myself hurting them."
"Well, you better learn to start hurting them if you want to stay with this tribe." Kane growled, putting his crown back on. "When it comes to us, you're either friend or foe, Bucky. And I was there when I saw you tell those guys that you were our friends now...you better prove that to me." He roughly pushed Bucky aside, and with a sigh...he followed his fellow tribe members back to their camp.

Ten more minutes later...

By the time the gang had reached the hill, the storm was raging fiercely on the island...and they were most definitely lucky to be safe in some form of shelter. Everyone was exhausted, out of breath...and still longing to get off the island. Eden even barely had the strength to make a small fire to light up their space, but still managed to produce something with her Elemental powers. "Is...everyone alright?" Wither Sickness asked, breaking the silence. "Tired, soaking wet, hurt, and starving...but other than that, we're just peachy keen!" Petra said, somewhat sarcastically. "To sum it up, we need rest." Eden said. "And as much as we can get, because we have to get up early so we can cross the ferret tribe's territory while they're still sleeping...and hopefully not get caught by them. Is that okay with everyone?" They thought about it for a moment, then all nodded their heads in confirmation. "Okay, then...let's get some sleep." Eden said. They curled up into the most comfortable position they could muster, and eventually managed to close their eyes...and fall into a much needed sleep.
