The Stone in the Sea

He said, Princess, you are a beautiful drop of sunshine,
in this cold, snowy world.
He said, Take this stone to remember that you are a courage- filled girl.
I asked, Are you planning to stay forever or are you dreaming to depart?
He said, Princess, I would swim the seven seas to find you, if life took us apart.

I walked along the icy road with him,
As time went on and from tragedy,
Our hearts were now torn.
I asked, Does this mean that now, new desires are born? A lust to get away, as far as you can?
He said, Of course not, Princess.
As he took my hand.
I said, I'm worried there's too much damage to fix our hearts.
He said, Princess I would swim the seven seas to find you, if life took us apart.

Now holding the stone in my hand,
At the end of my childhood years,
I think too myself, "I knew it,"
& giving up the fight of tears.
I stare at the horizon, remembering your promise to me.
& I watch for your silhouette, deep out into the sea.

I miss you, Dad. Do you even remember me?

The Alaskan stone suddenly felt too heavy & now, frozen.
I took the little but of courage that was left in it,
And tossed it into the ocean.
