"Trace" - Massacre Part I

It's been a while since I last killed. Two weeks, to be exact. Matthew Jackson and Joules are dead, but I didn't kill them. "Macbeth "did and I'm glad he/she took the heat off me.

We're sitting in the auditorium again. The staff's panicked by Macbeth's latest killing and has called another assembly. I wonder what would happen if I beat Macbeth. If I racked up more kills.

When the lights flicker and go out, I'm too excited to be scared. I just take my chance.

Chaos reigns as people run for the exits hoping to escape me and my competition. I can't help but smile--their fear is intoxicating.

I push through the quivering crowd and head to the front of the auditorium. A teacher is at the end of the aisle holding her glowing phone up. Fear is plain on her face as she nervously looks at the students around her. I guess she wants to make sure they're not killers.

Hah.

Moving quickly to the edge of the group I crane my neck to see who's in charge. Sarah Jordan's blond hair shines eerily in the white light of her phone's flashlight and she's trying not to cry. She's wearing her usual Carter Hollow staff uniform. It'll be her shroud.

"Ms. Jordan," I scream, "I saw a knife over there!"

I duck as she whips her head around to where my voice came from. Her phone's light shines on a piece of metal I placed on the ground nearby. A few students gasp. Sarah Jordan pushes through the kids around her and kneels examining the knife.

I move to the back of the small group. I scream loudly and repeatedly while pretending to be fighting off an attacker with a knife.

"AH! OUCH! STOP! GET AWAY FROM ME! HEELLLPPP!!!!!"

Terrified, the kids sprint away from me down the aisle towards where the first knife is on the ground and I quickly move to the side to see the results of my work. As the first kids reach Sarah Jordan, they try to stop before stepping on her but the panicked people behind them push them forward and almost before they know what they're doing they're running on and over Sarah Jordan who struggles in vain to escape and screams as she's trampled to a bloody mess under the feet of her beloved students.

I check the area quickly to make sure no-one is headed my way as I move towards what's left of Sarah Jordan. I shine my light on her corpse. It's an ugly mess and I frown at the carnage. I can't make this much mess next time.

As I turn to leave, a strong hand grabs my shoulder.

"What's this?" A female voice angrily asks. Whirling around, I see I'm staring at Harlow King. Her hazel eyes dart over to Sarah Jordan's corpse and she runs a hand through hir chocolate hair as her beautiful olive complexion turns slightly pale. Coach King stays quiet for a few moments while I realize she's waiting for an explanation.

Shit.

"Um...I was headed towards Ms. Jordan's group. Someone was attacked over there, and the kids got scared and ran over her." She's looking suspiciously at me now, like she doesn't believe my story. "Cause a knife was left on the ground and she headed over to examine it so when they heard me being attacked they ran up the aisle and over her."

"Mm-hm," Coach King says, and I know she's not fully convinced. "I think you should come with me, kid. You must be in shock after seeing such a horrific crime." There's a slight tremble in her voice as she speaks, and King's grip tightens on my shoulder and she leads me away from the body. I see King's hand drop to her school-issued walkie-talkie and realize I've messed up my story and she's going to turn me in.

I slip my knife out of my sleeve and try to gut the woman before she knows what's happening. But King pushes me away, and gets a few good punches in before I drive my blade into her chest. It takes a couple stabs, but she's finally down for good.

Looking down at myself, I see blood and guts spattered on my clothes. I sigh in frustration. Looks like I'll have to find another set of clothes. I quickly grab my light again and head for the tunnels. They're my safest bet of getting out without being discovered.

Deep in the tunnels, I hear a few voices laughing voices and a strange sucking noise. I turn off my light and round the corner. In the darkness I barely make out two kids kissing passionately. Annoyed, I scream and make a few sobbing noises while waving my light around wildly hoping to scare the kids off. I see them kiss one last time and the girl run away, but the guy stays and faces me.

Looks like he's trying to be a hero.

Sighing, I shine my light at full strength into the boy's blue eyes. I see it's Reid Hollows, and he's blinded. I punch his solar plexus and he doubles over. He's coming up as I grab a rock and hit him on the head. Reid is dazed now but an angry light fills his blue eyes. He lunges towards me and throws a few punches. The pain is awful and I stumble, but I manage to trip him too. Reid is down and I jump on top of him, crushing the life out of his throat. I'm careful not to get any of Jordan's or King's blood on him.

Finally, Reid stops struggling. I strip him of his clothes and dress him in my bloodstained uniform. Surprisingly, when I put them on, Reid's clothes fit me pretty well. The only thing I keep is my knife. I make sure to wipe it well.

Before I go, I take a note from my old uniform's pocket. "Catch me if you can," it mocks. "I'll vanish without a trace." I'm worried my note is too bold, but I decide to take the chance. I can't expect to beat Macbeth by hiding in the shadows, can I?

I set off into the tunnels in the dark, praying I don't find any more kids tonight.
