My first day at Carter Hollow Academy didn't go quite as expected.

Now, taking into mind that all my life I had been educated at schools where there was always a fight in the playground and it was impossible to turn a corner without seeing a window that was smashed because it had had someone's head put through, I felt pretty damn lucky to be going to an academy.

I was so nervous I had already bitten away most of my nails, although I did put on a coat of nail polish to cover it, the teachers made me wipe it off. I climbed down off my bunk bed, and headed into the corridor, same as all the other girls who I shared a dorm with.

I felt bad for one of the younger ones who had slept in late, trying to get her tights on under her skirt, I was like her. I always covered myself up when changing, but some of the other girls with model like figures walked round in their bras and knickers.

I walked down the corridor slightly out of pattern than the other students, who made their way to the assembly hall like sheep. A part of me wanted to just go back and lay on my bed, at least at my old school you could skive off and no one would care, here if you put a foot wrong it looked like you would spend a day in solitary confinement.

I was top dog at my old school, sadly I could control people around me with the power of charisma and a pretty smile, I now knew the errors of my ways, I was nothing but a coward.

Giving myself a boost of confidence before making my way with all the others, I felt ashamed. The girls I knew looked at me as if I was absent. All the years of gossip and secrets I had on them, If looks could kill I would be dead and buried by now.

It suddenly dawned on me that there was a lot more security guards outside than normal, I had just sat down in my chair in the assembly when some of the girls were peering through the curtains. Men with UV jackets with Security printed on them stood outside about two meters apart. In front of them were parked police cars, a girl, Addie, was at the front. "Cool." She smiled, she had opened the curtain just enough so I could see out a few chairs along. A guard turned round and faced me, I jumped a little.

"I think," I started. "We should just close that." I mumbled, taking a hold of her arm and lowering the curtain. I gulped and sat back, I had only ever stole a packet of mini eggs in my life and I didn't think that they were here to arrest me.

A microphone ripple found its way to my ears, we all turned to look. Our head teacher, stood on the stage and started a speech. "Welcome back to another school year! I see we have taken in some new students, I know we did this all yesterday and everyone is dying to get onto classes but I have called you here to exert a great sadness." He announced, making eye contact with me before returning to his position. A bead of sweat wove its way to the front of his forehead, it was small but he did have to mop it away. "As some of you may know a terrible accident took place yesterday, a student, Nicholi Trevino, passed away. All lessons will be cancelled for the day, and we can start to grieve. "

Whaling came from some of the students, I furrowed my brow and stared at the teacher. People had started filing out, whilst I had remained in my chair. "Sabrina, get up." I heard Addie nudging me, people rushed passed her. I knew only a handful of people would actually grieve, whilst the rest would only go to skive.

"How does someone just die?" I asked, turning my head to Addie. "I mean don't they have any clue to what happened?"

"I don't think this is the time." She stated.

"No, I mean it couldn't have been an accident, someone doesn't just die with no explanation."

Her face was as blank as a sheet, uncomfortably she sat in her chair, her back arched. A twitch in the corner of her mouth signalled that she was going to respond.

"Sometimes," She started. "These things just happen for no reason. Will you please now just let it go?"

"Ok"

Something strange is going on at Carter Hollow, and I'm determined to find out.
