Marilyn Maverick - Task One

"Good luck, auntie Mary!" my niece called as I waved goodbye.

"Thanks June," I replied, grinning from ear to ear. "Have a wonderful day. Thanks for the call, Wendy," I noted to my sister.

"Sure thing Marilyn." Wendy waved it off. "Good luck on your first day. Bye," I called. I waved once more before pushing the red button to hang up. I looked at the time displayed at the top of the screen. I needed to be to the school in twenty minutes. I was all ready to head over to my office at Carter Hollow. As the school nurse, there was a lot to do before the students arrived.

I grabbed my keys off of the counter, grabbed a banana and went out to my car. As I pulled out of the driveway, I noticed dark clouds on the horizon. It would be another rainy day in Florida.

The drive to the school was uneventful other than a scarce spitting of rain drops. There were about four other cars parked, but other than that, campus seemed deserted. I parked and hurried towards the front doors, shouldering my purse as I briskly moved towards the school. I entered the school and as I patted my curly hair, I got a good look of the schools grounds.

It was very green, something that was common in Florida. There were sidewalks connecting all of the buildings. There seemed to be about three total. Several palm trees dotted the campus, which would produce some shade when it was sunny. The landscaping was very precise; each bush was trimmed to perfection, every flower equally large. It was impressive.

I turned my gaze away from the glass door and started towards the main office. I pushed open the door and was relieved to find someone there.

"Hello," I spoke. The woman at the desk looked up. "I'm the new school nurse here."

"Ah, you must be Miss Maverick." The woman stood  looked up at the clock. Was it time for the students to be here already? The welcoming speech would start in about fifteen minutes. I couldn't believe that I swept through the students' arrival.

I opened the door and saw two students, a boy and a girl, arms wrapped around each other. The girl was giggling softly. As the door opened, it creaked loudly and the two leapt apart.

"I don't mean to interrupt, but shouldn't you two be getting ready for the welcoming speech?

"Uh, yeah," the boy spoke, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was just going to get a drink. Cordelia was coming with me."

   "Nicholi–" the girl whisper-giggled.

"Better hurry up, then," I raised an eyebrow and smiled. "The speech starts soon."

"Will do ma'am," The boy spoke. "Go ahead Cordelia. I'll see you there." He turned around and ran down the hall. The girl turned on her heel and left. This would be an interesting first day.
