Danielle Wilde - Challenge Four

What did ms. Blackwell have planned now? First the theatre incident, then the gym and now a dance! What was she thinking?
Have they not learned that putting us together in big groups is a bad idea? It's when the most murders happen. Some people seemed to disagree though, loud screams and shrieks of excitement filled my ears. Which was soon followed by quick footsteps running to who knows where.
Sighing I knew that their was nothing else they could do and at least they were trying.
Instead of being terrified every second and paranoid about this murderer on campus I was just gonna go with it. Knowing just the thing, I texted Joan to meet up in my room in 10 with a dress and makeup. After that I left my dorm leaving the door open for Joan and made my way down the hall and a flight of stairs towards Ariadne's room.
It was time for us girls to have fun. I knocked on her dorm room door with an unnecessary force. "Ari! Open up!" I call out with excitement bubbling inside me.
Not long after the door is yanked open by a frustrated Ariadne. Sending her a smile I step inside. "Did you hear about the dance?" I ask.
She raised her eyebrows sarcastically letting me know she did. "I think someone in Canada didn't hear that squealing fest. Of course I heard it!" She says once again sarcastically.
Ignoring her sass I cut to the chase. "Ok great! Are you going?" I ask.
"Nope." She replies rolling her eyes.
Okay something is up. I turn to her bored and frustrated figure and instantly know something is wrong. As my expression softens and turns into concern I ask "Ari what's wrong?" Already slightly having an idea of what's bothering her.
"Dani, you have to be smart enough to figure it out." And she was right, I could see right through her.
"If you mean the fact that someone is going to die at the dance, then yes I do know." I tell her while placing one hand on my hip and raising my eyebrows in a knowing way.
She stares at me with a shocked and surprised expression. "If you know then.." She starts off, but I cut in.
"We deserve a little fun, we're still teenagers after all."
She gives me a worried glance. "But.." She starts off trying to find the right words. "If we die it's permanent, Dani. We're not coming back! This isn't a game."
She does have a point, but if we all lived like this; afraid of death, it'd be chaotic. To me death is a natural thing that nobody is ready for, but will happen. You either got to accept that or try too.
"You can't let it control you Ari! Don't you see? This is what the murderer wants! They want us to be scared, so scared that we can't even be happy. If you don't go, you're playing right into the murderer's hands! Besides would you rather live a short life happy or a long life miserable?" I finish off looking at her and raising my eyebrows suggestively.
She reluctantly nods and mumbles "short life happy."
"Exactly. Now come on! Don't make me drag you out of here." I threaten knowing she'll listen.
Linking arms with her we start the short journey back to my room.
"I don't even have a dress." She complains as we're walking up the flight of stairs.
"Uh.. Yes you do!" I say knowing that she'd have more dresses than me.
"What?" She asked clearly confused. I then remembered her dress I had packed.
"What about your bridesmaid's dress from Jemina's wedding last year." I suggest trying to hide my smirk.
"I didn't pack it." She says with a sigh.
"That's what you think." I say as she stares at me suspiciously no longer able to hide the smirk on my face.
"Well I packed it!" I say excitedly. I was gonna make her wear it for her surprise birthday party I was planning, but this works too.
"I knew you'd forget something! Plus sophomores are allowed more luggage than I could ever use so that day I was over at your place, I just took the liberty to pack your dress." I explain.
"Wow, thanks!" She exclaims.
"No problem. Just make sure you remember it next time we're in the greenhouse." I say with a laugh.
She rolls her eyes. "Alright fine, I'll do the weeding. You can do the watering."
"Great!" I shriek flinging open the door to my room when Joan lays sprawled out across my bed.
"Let's get ready girls!" I yell getting excited.
Joan started with doing our makeup since I was hopeless with that stuff. Ari was up first. "So, what look are you going for?" She asked her getting the essentials out as I sat back and watched.
"Um I don't know.. Nothing overboard. My dress is blue.." Ari trailed off, but Joan cut in.
"I know exactly what to do!" She exclaimed excitedly before starting. As she started I decided to start on my hair. My hair naturally had slight waves so I decided to add a bit more wave to it. Nothing to complicated just slightly different; the way I liked it.
Every now and then I'd hear Joan mumble things like 'stop moving' or 'stay still' which was quite entertaining.
I was done my hair before Joan was done with Ari and I couldn't wait to see the final product.
When Ari was done she looked amazing. Her eyes were brought out with some bold mascara and some sparkly grey eyeshadow, completing the whole natural mysterious look with a dark pink lip gloss. Joan did such a good job, I couldn't believe how talented she was with this kinda stuff.
Next was me. I was excited yet nervous at the same time. "What about you Dani, what do you want?" Joan asked me with a smile tugging at her lips.
"Something light and natural. My dress is white so yeah.." I trailed off awkwardly to which she let out a giggle.
"Okay I got an idea." She said before starting her magic.
All I could feel was different brushes attacking my face and I really wish there was a mirror in front of me right now. I had no idea what was going on or what I looked like, but I trust Joan.
After what seemed like forever for me, she was done and held up the mirror. Once again she did an amazing job.
I had some mascara on my lashes matched with some winged eyeliner. My eyelids were covered in a light coat of gold and silver sparkles. Lastly my lips had a light shade of pink lipgloss on them.
"This is incredible! Thanks Joan." I told her smiling brightly.
Joan then did her makeup. She had more of a bold look that suited her extremely well. It was now time for our dresses.
We all started slipping our clothes off and slipping our dresses on.
Ari was wearing a long one strap dress that was dark blue at the top which faded to light blue at the bottom. I also leant her a pair of black open toe pumps to go with her dress. The great thing about having the same shoe size was double the amount of shoes.
Next was Joan. She had on a long coral coloured dress covered with sparkles. The skirt part of it was puffy and shimmery matching her figure perfectly. Her dress had sleeves starting halfway down the shoulder which were sheer. She had on a pair of white and gold strapping heels matching extremely well with her dress.
As for me I had on a short white dress. At the top the collar was lace until my chest area where it went to the fabric. At the waist of my dress it had a rhinestone like belt going around and the skirt of my dress flowed out a bit. It ended about mid thigh. To go with my dress I decided on a pair of regular sparkly silver pumps.
We were all done and ready. I couldn't get over how nice we all looked. "Now let's have some fun girls!" I yell linking my arms with theirs as we make our way out of my dorm.
We could already feel the vibrations of music under our feet. "At least we won't have trouble finding the courtyard." I say amusingly and Joan nods in agreement.
"I'm not sure if this is the music or if an earthquake is happening right now.." Ari trails off and I look at her curiously.
"All I know is that if this is an earthquake, we're walking straight into the middle of it." She continues and I could hear he silently add "in more ways then one."
I now understood what she was getting at and I purse my lips displeased with her, but didn't say anything.
The tension between us all rises quickly, it's so strong it's almost suffocating. No one says anything nor looks at each other all feeling awkward in this situation.
I always hated being in positions like these. Me and Ari hardly ever fought and if we did it was over the littlest things. This was because we balanced each other out. I was more daring and the risk taker out of us two, while she was more reserved and quiet. She liked to stick to a routine while I liked to try new things. We fit together perfectly as cousins even though I consider her a sister.
I'd always try to convince her to do the things I did, and when it was something extreme she would talk me out of it. I seriously don't know where I'd be without her.
Whenever we did argue I was the more hotheaded and stubborn one. We'd leave each other in a fit of temper and start feeling guilty. We'd stay like this until we couldn't handle the tension and guilt building up. Most of the time it was Ari to apologize first because of my stubborn behaviour, but when she did I'd be relieved.
Still walking in silence trying to outlast each other. I was about to give in knowing that this could be our last day together, but a sigh stopped me.
"I'm sorry Dani, you're right. We should go to the dance and have some fun." Ari tells me softly.
I immediately relax and let out a sigh of relief. "I'm sorry too Ari. I should have paid more attention to your concerns."
The tension leaves the air and I could hear Joan sigh in relief as well. Me and Ari quickly hug it out and it's back to normal.
Moments later loud yells echo behind us breaking our awkward silence with confusion and amusement at the same time.
Both Leo and Adam come puffing up behind us, flaring their hands around for us to stop and I can't help but let out a snort of laughter.
"Hey wait up!" Adam yells.
"We were going to ask you to the dance..." Leo says catching his breath. "But we didn't want to pick favourites."
I roll my eyes at them, but continue listening,
"So we're going to ask all of you! As a group!" They finish.
Joan coughs and we turn our attention to her seeing that she's shaking her head in disgust. "I am not going with my cousin, thank you very much."
"Fine then, in your case, only also is asking you. Anyways, we've got even better news." Adam says and I chuckle at his excitement.
"You may have noticed that we appear slightly bulkier than you last saw us, but contrary to popular belief, we have not ingested a lot of junk food."
I raise my eyebrows questioningly and cough "chip eating contest" under my breath.
Adam seems to hear me as he launches a glare my way before speaking up again. "We, being the geniuses that we are put on this!" He pulls down the collar of his shirt a couple inches revealing a think layer of black material. It then clicked, the bulletproof we had left at Leo's place.
I shut my mouth and nod impressed. "Dang it! We should have done that!" Ari says while Leo and Adam smirk.
"Good thing for you, we brought extras."
They hand us each a weapon. Ari ended up with a can of pepper spray while Joan and I got tasers. Then something else came up, we had nowhere to put them, well except for one place..
Joan makes a twirling motion with her finger at the boys signalling them to turn around but they don't understand.
I place my hands on my hips waiting expectantly as Joan motions for them to turn around again.
"Turn around!" She hisses and they quickly turn around with shocked expression on their faces.
Ari quickly sticks her can of pepper spray as me and Joan do the same with our tasers.
"Try not to taser yourself will you." Ari mutters to us and we grimace at the thought.
"Okay, you can turn back around now!" I announce and they both do now with more understanding.
"Did you just stick them in your.." Leo trails off not seeming able to finish the sentence so Adam does.
"..Brassiere?" He finishes awkwardly and I let out a few laughs.
"Yes you got any better idea? I thought not." Ari says and Joan quickly adds in, "now let's go."
The boys nod and follow behind still flushed in the face.
After a couple of minutes we finally reach the courtyard and the music is so loud I almost have the urge to cover my ears. Bright lights flash across the room but the rest of the place is dark.
We all exchange worried glances. We all know that this is a perfect place for a murder to happen. The music is so loud you wouldn't be able to detect a scream and people are moving fast even though you can barely see two feet in front of yourself.
"Where do you want to go?" I can barely hear Ari yell over.
We all call out suggestions and we end up by a light pole at the edge of the crowd. A string of colourful lights circle up the side so it's would be hard to miss.
Joan, Adam and I are off to get drinks while Ari and Leo stay behind at our meeting point.
As me and Adam reach the drink table we turn to wait for Joan but can't see her. After looking around for a few moments we can't seem to spot her anywhere and worry starts to set in.
"Where do you think she went?" Adam asks.
"I don't know, maybe back to Ari and Leo?" I say.
He nods and we both head back to our meet up to find out Ari and Leo aren't there. Looking around I spot them on the dance floor dancing together, but there's still no sign of Joan.
"Look! Ari and Leo are over there!" I say to Adam pointing in the direction.
He nodded before wandering off. Shrugging I went onto the dance floor and danced. I was here to have a good time.
The night went by in a blur dancing and chatting with people I've never seen before, but it was good to let loose and enjoy the moment. I had a weapon to protect myself and I stayed close to my friends. I wasn't going to go down without a fight that was for sure.
