Bryn Hafer - Challenge Two

"Alright, outta the car." The officer opens the door and looks at me expectantly.

"Do I have to?" I ask desperately, feeling a little scared. "Can't you hold me at the station a bit longer?" My thoughts have been getting the best of me during my stay at the police station.

'I don't want to back to the school. There's a... well, there's at least one murderer here somewhere. And it could be ANYONE.' That thought terrifies me.

"I think you're the first person I've ever heard say that, kiddo," he replies. "Now, let's go. Out of the car." He grabs me, and forces me out of the cruiser, before uncuffing me and walking me towards Carter Hollow Academy.

As I look on at the monumental brick building, it dawns on me that it's looking less and less like a school and more like a prison the longer I stay. And someone let the convicts out. That's when we can see Miss Blackwell, looking frazzled. The cop nudges us, Lily and I, towards the Principal's office.

"Miss Blackwell." The officer tips his hat in a small gesture of salute."Where are you going?" The superintendant steps directly in front of us, halting our advance.

"To see the Principal," I reply quietly. But she shakes her head 'no' in response. Lily and I share a quizzical glance, and I raise an eyebrow. 'Something's wrong....'Miss Blackwell turns on her heel and starts away from us, moving towards the theatre. We follow her, ducklings in a row behind the mother duck, and the officer finally deals with the elephant in the room.

"Was there another murder?" Her nod sucks the air out of my lungs.

'This is really bad... We have no idea who's killing, and who they'll kill next.' I look forward, towards the hundreds of students stumbling into the theatre. 'Who's next?' My mind asks. But I cannot answer my own question. These killers have their own motives. But until we find that out.... We had better hope for the best.

"It was a girl named Joules," Miss Blackwell admits.Suddenly another thought hits me.

"Is the school shutting down?" Arabella's fiery glare turns to face me.

"No, of course not," she snaps quickly. She speeds her way towards the theatre, and enters it soon. When we follow, I can already tell that something's amiss. Instead of sitting quietly and waiting, like most assemblies, students are all over the place.

I look around the room, trying to piece together what's going on.In my peripherals, I see a glimmer in the lights. A metal blade in a student's hand. My eyes widen in fear.

And then I'm plunged into darkness. The initial screams are ear-piercingly loud, and they seem to be coming from all directions. Then silence. Complete silence.

"Everyone okay?" I ask quietly.Suddenly, there's a sickening squelch, and a light 'thud'.

"Ugh...help.....me......." My heart races in fear.

'There's a murderer in here with us....' Someone runs by me, brushing me, and knocking me to the ground in the pitch darkness.

"Hey, watch i-"Someone else grabs me from above, and I can see the knife, slick with blood, plunge downwards. I roll away, shaking off the attacker.

"Get... Off!!" I lash out with a fist, and it connects in the dark, sending a sharp jolt of pain through my arm. I hear a muffled swear word and I know what I did worked. But the killer isn't done yet. The knife comes down again, and I juke at the last second.

"Leave me alone!" I find the arm of my attacker, and twist it until the knife falls, clattering loudly to the ground. I can hear the drip of blood as it hits the floor. Unable to see my attacker, but able to see the knife, I lunge desperately for it.But the killer gets there first. I don't take any more chances. I kick out, fast, and bolt away.

The agonized scream tells me I wounded my attacker. I use this chance to get myself into a corner. The darkest, furthest corner of the stage area. And I hide. The screams are echoing around the theatre still, but I just close my eyes and shut it out, praying. 'Please don't be me. Please not me...'
