Chapter Two
"Katniss's group on the train." A rebel buzzes. I groan softly. Of course she's first, cause why not honor the little mockingjay of the rebellion by letting her choose my name first while the other victors wait, getting into the car first while the others wait, and now, hopping into a train with her group first while the others wait?
I stare out a window that zooms in on a view of the Capitol. This is going to be the very last time I'll see it, so I might as well make the moment count.
"Celestia," Katniss's stern voice rings in the air. "Into the train."
Sighing, I walk into the vehicle right as the doors close and the train starts running, quickly picking up at full speed. I look down at my feet, feeling the vibration of cold steel tracks hard at work as the train flies over them.
Before I can wait any longer, Katniss snaps, "Into the dining room," and we quickly parade in with her.
We sit at the luxurious glass table for an eternity, just staring at each other awkwardly. I dare to glance at Katniss, and we meet eyes for a second-The charred gray ashes of smoke against a bright ice blue-then turn away in hatred for each other, looking back down at the table.
"So," The Mockingjay finally says. "You probably understand the fact that there is a very small chance of you getting out alive, so listen up. Watch as many recaps of the former Games as you can, and take note of what the victors did to win. Think about what types of weapons and techniques you may use in the Games, although it's best not to share that information with other tributes. And when we arrive there and it's time to train, go for either those weapons, or do something like survival and plant memorization. Personally, I would do survival so I could save my skills for the Gamemakers instead.
"Your rooms are down that hallway," she points to a hallway I haven't noticed yet. "And I think dinner is served around two hours."
With that, I spring off from my seat and pick a room with sky blue walls, a large marine canopy bed, and a TV as well as a bathroom, of course. The other three tributes are not as quick, slowly getting up to their feet and staring into no specific thing as if they're memorizing what Katniss has said. Then, they pick their rooms and slam the doors shut.
I dig behind the TV, and find a few CD's, which say, "The 45th Hunger Games," "The 37th Hunger Games," "The 72nd Hunger Games," and "The 74th Hunger Games." I pick up the last one and slide it into the player.
The screen immediately lights up, and I use the remote to skip everything until I see the training, interviews, etc. Then, the actual Games begin. Katniss, Peeta, and the other tributes are standing on their pedestals in a circle, bracing themselves. Above them is a black screen announcing the amount of seconds the tributes have to stand before the Games begin. "60," it proclaims. "59, 58 ..." And then it goes down to the last five seconds. "5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Happy seventh-fourth Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"
All the tributes jump off their pedestals, some foolishly running towards the center for weapons but then getting slaughtered by the tributes from Districts One, Two, and Four-or Careers, as people from poorer districts call them-while others like Katniss head into the woods.
Katniss keeps sprinting and sprinting into the woods, not stopping until she's sure she lost all other tributes. I watch her hunt and roast a squirrel, and then the camera switches off to the Careers and Peeta, who joined them.
An intimidating girl who's flipping her knives in the air is saying, "Nice job, we totally killed them."
I shudder.
"Yeah," a tall, skinny boy with brown hair sneers. "I guess the rest will just die on their own."
"Or," The leader, a strong, menacing guy with a long sword says, "We'll slaughter them!" and the group explodes in laughter, except Peeta's looking a bit-well, very-shy to join in.
"Yeah, especially Fire Girl." The girl with knives snarls. "Whenever I see her twirl in that dress, I want to puke."
"Okay, you've made your point, Clove," The leader says. "Twelve is all yours to kill."
"Seriously, Cato?" A blond haired female groans. "Clove just made a remark about how she hates Girl on Fire, and you just let her do the killing?"
"Or," Clove smiles sweetly. "We can decide who gets to kill Twelve right here, right now, with a fight. Would you like that, Glimmer?"
"No," Glimmer mutters.
"Okay then, that's what I thought." Clove smirks.
That's when the Careers vanish, and I see the tiny girl from Eleven, Rue, sitting in a tree. I feel bad for her; she can't-well, couldn't-stand a chance against the other tributes.
Rue quietly twiddles with a Y-shaped branch in her hands, forming a slingshot to hunt with. She then manages to catch a sparrow with it.
The next few events are exactly what I heard what happened. The Careers find Katniss and chase her up a tree, where she drops a nest of tracker jackers on them, killing the girls from Districts One and Four and sending the others towards a lake. After that happens, Rue finds an unconscious Katniss and takes care of her for a couple days.
When Katniss wakes up, she immediately allies with Rue. Then, the two tributes plan to destroy the Careers' supplies and send Katniss to shoot an arrow at a bag of apples on a huge stack of goods by the cornucopia. She does so, angering Cato and causing him to kill the District Three boy, who was supposed to be on guard, but Rue accidentally gets caught in one of Marvel, the boy from One's traps.
Katniss frees her just in time to see Marvel, who she shoots, but Marvel throws a spear into Rue's abdomen. A tearful Katniss sings Rue to sleep, well, death, and then the Gamemakers announce that there can be two victors in the Games if they're from the same district. Elated, Katniss soon finds Peeta camouflaged and severely injured from Cato's sword. They seek shelter in a cave, where they gain sponsors by kissing. Gross.
After a couple days, Katniss and Peeta find out that there is a feast at the cornucopia so they can get the supplies they need. When Peeta is out cold, Katniss sneaks out and grabs her bag of medicine. However, Clove catches her and is about to stab her heart, when Thresh, the massive, terrifying male tribute from Eleven, comes out and smashes Clove's head against a rock. While she's dying, Thresh and Katniss have a small conversation about Rue, and Thresh decides to let Katniss go. They leave the cornucopia in separate directions, soon before Cato reaches the cornucopia and spends an eternity after Clove's death mourning and throwing rocks around. (A/N: I made that part up 😂)
Finally, there's the last few days of the Games. Cato kills Thresh to avenge Clove. Katniss and Peeta separately search for food, all while Finch, the District Five girl's cannon sounds. Thinking that it's Peeta, Katniss panics, but then she finds out that Peeta is alive after all. They then discover that the cannon was Finch's, and that the berries Peeta was gathering were nightlock.
The sky is darkening, and wolf mutations of the fallen tributes come out, chasing Katniss and Peeta towards the cornucopia. They get there on time, but face Cato in a violent battle. Cato manages to get Peeta in a chokehold, telling Katniss that if she shoots him, Peeta will go down as well. However, he doesn't realize that Peeta is using blood to draw an "X" on his right hand, where Katniss shoots Cato. He falls, landing with a thud on the ground, where the mutts get him.
Katniss and Peeta wait for the whole night for Cato to die, but at early dawn they find out that he's still alive because of the armor he received as a sponsor. Cato begs Katniss to put him out of his misery, which she does by shooting him in the head. His cannon sounds.
Soon, it's daytime. The lovebirds of District Twelve are ready to go home, but the Gamemakers say that there can only be one victor, forcing them to fight each other. Katniss and Peeta pull out the nightlock they saved, declaring that the Capitol will not have a victor if they commit suicide. At the last second, the Gamemakers say that they can both win, and the television screen darkens with a blink.(A/N: All these past events belong rightfully to the one and only Suzanne Collins.)
It's dinnertime. I join the other tributes at the table, where we silently dig in on the ravishing food. Even though I live in the Capitol, I haven't seen as much food as this before, because of my mother's strict eating requirements. Now, though, it's best to eat as much as I can, so I can gain a couple pounds. I try to cram as much food in my mouth as I can. The two thirteen-year-old boys across from me, Alistair and Benjamin, are doing the same thing, while Brooke is still focusing on her table manners.
"Your eating style certainly is interesting," Katniss suddenly says to me, as I wolf a ton of mashed potatoes. "Considering your Capitol roots."
I fire back, "You'd be surprised that a few of us don't act like what superstitions of us say, like our eating habits, clothes, or hate for the previous Games that should have been at least thought about before you guys ruthlessly picked on us because of our ancestry."
She looks shocked for a few seconds while I continue stuffing my mouth. Finally, Katniss says, "Let's watch the reaping recaps."
We crowd around a large screen in the living room. I first see Caesar Flickerman on the screen, his crazy new pink and gold hair causing quite a distraction. As Brooke gets reaped, he says, "Certainly wasn't expecting it was she? Quite a shame." Brooke turns red and finds a sudden interest in the carpet.
When I see myself getting reaped, Caesar gasps. "And a twist, we have Celestia Snow, granddaughter of President Snow in the Games! The daughter of Panem is being forced to fight against her own citizens; horrible!" I wouldn't say it that way; I know that all of Panem will be cheering for my death. I bite my lip and scowl at Benjamin, who has shot me an amused look.
Not a lot of other tributes stand out to me; most of them are just the usual grieving puddles of tears and makeup as they get reaped, but I take note of a couple ones. There is an angry, burly sixteen-year-old brown haired boy who is reaped by Peeta. He might be one of the last few surviving tributes, or one of the first few to die in the bloodbath. The chances of either occasion happening are equal. Then, a timid young girl about my age that Beetee chose makes her way up to the stage. My heart aches for her; there is almost no way she will be the victor.
After the reaping is done, the screen blackens again, and I return to the comfort of my bouncy blue canopy, falling asleep at once.
-Time Skip-
"Up, tributes!" Katniss's harsh yell wakes me, and I lazily flop out of my bed and change into a bright yellow T-shirt with jeans before making my way down the hallway to the dining room.
White bread, grape jam, and fluffy yellow scramble eggs have already been prepared for us, but all the other tributes are gathered around a large window, where I join them and my mouth opens in a wide gasp.
We have arrived at a place with little shattered gray houses and coal mines, but you can hardly tell anything apart because of all the destruction that happened during the rebellion. Silver dust covers everything, as dreadful human skulls cover the ground. An eagle soars above us, delivering an earsplitting cry of grief.
"What happened?" Brooke whispers after a moment of silence.
"Don't you see?" I answer. "While we were in the luxury of the Capitol when the war started, District Twelve received its final lash of punishment for rebelling before finally dying."
