Chapter 12 {THE FIRST DAY}

"It's quite beautiful actually. Don't'cha think?" Royalayn Adella Sandler whispered looking up at the wondrous white sky, its surface marbled with streaks of grey cloud. She looked over to her side at the girl next to her, Rayna Alicia Hart. She didn't respond, her gaze buried into whatever was in front of them. It had been like this for the whole day, Rosayln would talk and talk trying to fill the void with something other then anxiety and tension. Then Rayna would "charmingly" choose not to respond , killing Rosyaln's efforts for peace.

Rosyaln signed under her breath looking around. The pair was in the middle of the city, surrounded on either side by steel and glass buildings of tremendous height. Rosalyn looked up at the nearest building, its side slanted and covered in panels of glass like some of the older business offices back in the Capital- home. Snow was drifting from the sky at a slow yet steady rate. The flakes were large and fluffy and floated down like frozen feathers from a cold angel in the sky.

The two girls had been walking for hours, ever since they ran into each other shortly after the initial bloodbath. Rosyaln had been the one to recommend they align for the time being. Afterall it made perfect sense. Both of them were fairly independent, strong, young women who intended on winning. Rosayln figured they could been essential to each other in the games. They hadn't ever talked outside of the games though, not even training. Rosyaln probably wouldn't have aligned the girl is she knew it would be like this...

"Hey Rayna... Wanna go inside this building and set camp? I mean- where are we even going? There..Well there is nowhere to go." Rosayln said , looking over at Rayna . She stopped walking, letting her combat boots sink into the fluffy yet slightly packed white snow. Rayna stopped too looking up at Rosayn, her long brunette hair now tied into a high ponytail.

"Yea... Probably the best idea" Rayna agreed with a quick nod of the head. She started walking once again, the door into the office building up ahead. She approached the automatic door slowly and waited for it to open. It never did. Instead Rayna, using all the strength she had decided to pry it open- using her sword. Now Rayna was the most proficient in using a bow- she had taken archery classes for several years when she was a kid, but during the bloodbath she wasn't lucky enough to get her own weapon. Instead she got a simple sword, a weapon that was supposed to be in possession by Marissa Smith. But she was dead now, it didn't matter that she had the poor girls sword.

Rayna, a determined look on her face, took the gleaming metal sword and lodged in between the steel lined glass panels of the door. Rosyaln stood back, a small smirk on her face. Maybe choosing to align with Rayna was a good choice after all. Rayna took a quick look behind her and smiled back before turning round and wedging the door open. She pressed all of her bodyweight into the weapon slowly but surely prying the two doors open, just enough for Rayna and Rosayln to get in. Rayna then quickly sheathed her weapon before looking back at Rosalyn with a smirk of her own.

"There we go. Easy peasy. " She sighed . She then slipped into the small space in between the panels, Rosyaln quickly following her. Once inside the building, Rosayln looked around her. They were simply in the lobby of the building, a long dimly lit hall with dark red carpeting . At the end of the hall there was a large round desk, the base ebony black and the top covered in a thin glass sheet. Rosalyn started walking, closely followed Rayna as they approached the desk. The stark grey walls were smooth and bare, devoid of any paintings, signs, or decor of any kind.

"I don't like this place." Rosayln sighed looking around. "It's too bare... Naked almost. It feels so..."

"Unnatural?" Rayna said, cutting the other girl off.

"Yeah. Exactly. It needs some life, maybe a painting here or a curtain there..." She said pointing to the walls. "Do you think they made it like this on purpose?" She asked her ally closely treading by her side. Rayna didn't respond, and so Rosayln in her disappointment sighed.

The two girls approached the front desk. Rayna looked on top of the desk noticing something peculiar. There was a button, big bright and red sitting on top of the desk. Under it big bold print on a slip of paper read "DO NOT PUSH". Rayna looked over at Rosalyn a quizzical look on her face. What the hell did this mean?

"What is this?" Rosyaln said just as confused as Rayna. Rayna closed her eyes for a few moments thinking.

"Do you think that we maybe are supposed to push it? Like a reverse psychology kind of thing?" Rayna asked , this being the best idea she could come up with. After All this was quite ominous. Here they were in this huge building, with no signs of access to the rest of the floors plus a big button demanding that it shouldn't be pressed without explanation.

"Maybe... But what if it's a trap?" Rosayln questioned looking back at the button and back at Rayna. "This seem like it could be total reverse psychology" Rosyaln argued, a look of distress on her face. What were they supposed to do?

"There's only one to truthfully find out right?" Rayna said , extending a hand and hovering it over the red button. She felt a lump rise up in her throat. "Should I do it?" She asked her ally, looking at the distressed look on her face. "What if they want us to think it's a trap but really it's an advantage..."

"Double reverse psychology?"

"Sure..."

"Press it."

"Press it?"

"Go"

She pressed it, a small yet strong hand falling onto the button. Rosayln closed her eyes, expecting something to happen. They both stood there for nearly a minute, to afraid to move. And yet nothing did happen. Rayna took her hand off of the button and swore under her breath before looking over at Rosayln, whose eyes were still clenched shut.

"C'mon... This was simply utter bullshit" Rayna murmured under her breath, just loud enough for the other girl to hear. She opened her eyes and looked around.

"At least nothing bad happened." Rosyaln said trying to inject some hope into the situation. Sure, they haven't received any magical advantage or anything but at least it wasn't a total trap. Royals looked over at Rayna who started walking towards the exit of the building. Rosayln quickly followed her down the barren hall, looking ahead at the pried open door. Rayna stopped at the door sighing.

"God is cold ou-" She started before a shrill shrieking noise erupted from below the girls. Rosalyn looked up at Rayna wide eyed, the sound of grinding metal and twisting metal cables coming from the floor. "We need to get out of here!' Rayna yelled moving towards the opening before something happened. The floor pulled out from underneath them, retreated into the wall at a rapid pace, producing it's own trapful cocaphony of sounds. The girls fell into the darkness, their entire bodies engulfed by the floor...

Colin had been awfully quiet the entire day. Usually the dark minded boy would be spouting out orders and and insults to the the others in his alliance- Shea Prescott, Patricia Kooti, and Zella Holland. But here's the thing, Zella was dead now, and by Colin's hand. It wasn't planned, it had just happened. During the chaos of the bloodbath Patricia and Shea had decided were fighting off an armed Kota Jackson when the other two hid behind a pile of crates. Colin had his knives, Zella had nothing. Before anyone could see it Colin drove his knife into the back of her head and then into her back. That's when West had seen them. He ran, bringing the rest of the alliance with him.

"Zella was killed. That bastard West...He shot her with that damned crossbow." He whispered looking into the small campfire they had going. He looked intensely into the flames, refusing to make eye contact with anyone in the group. Both Pat and Shea had noticed their leaders strange behavior, it was hella peculiar. Shea guessed he just felt guilty maybe, for not being able to save Zella maybe.

"It's okay Colin. It wasn't your fault. I saw him with that thing... It would of been hard not to get shot once you were his target." Shea said looking at the boy across the fire, flakes of snow falling into his blonde blood spattered hair. The fire threw intense warm light onto Colin's face as he looked up at Shea.

"Thanks Shea... It's just that-" he starts before being interrupted by Pat.

"Dude. Don't worry about it, it's okay" Pat says looking at Colin. He felt incredibly bad for the older boy, how could he not? Zella had trusted her life in Colin's hands and he had failed her. Patrick got up from his place, wiping off snow from his bottom, before walking over to Colin. He sat down next to him and wrapped an arm around him. "It's okay"

Colin was about ready to stab Patricia as well. He was not in the mood to be touched by the slightly younger boy. He didn't want all of this damn sympathy either. He knew he needed it to convince the others he had no fault in Zella's death, not that they had any evidence to blame him for any crime. But of course this was the Hunger Games. One didn't need reason to blame others in the games. In the games all you needed to betray your own ally was paranoia, paranoia or opportunity.

Pat stared into the fire, the flames rising off of the small metal plate they found in the cornucopia. Hundreds of holes were drilled through the plate and when activated these holes emitted little flames. It was kinda mesmerizing in a sense. Shea looked at the two boys, one wrapped around the other. And for a split second she saw Colin's expression, that of anger and the will to kill.

"Colin... Did you-" Shea started before being cut off by the sound of the cannon ringing through the arena.

Royalyn hit the ground like a ton of bricks, her head hitting the floor shortly before Rayna hit the bottom as well. Rosayln lied there for what felt like forever, pain flooding her head like a tsunami. She felt sore and bruised everywhere, her body having absorbed the entire impact of the fall. Blackness rimmed her vision of the "sky", a series of fluorescent lights lining a steel ceiling- the floor they had just been standing on.

"Rayna... Are you okay?" the girl muttered, her platinum silver hair sprawled out across the floor. She softly turned her head to see her ally, Rayna sitting up resting her face in the palm of her hands.

"UGHHH, my head." Rayna mumbled into her head before looking up and over to Rosyaln, who was still on the ground. "I guess I'm okay... God damn.." she muttered her head throbbing with pain coming from the growing welt on the back of her head. "Where the hell are we?" Rayna asked as Rosayln sat up looking around the room. They appeared to be in a strange basement like room, with concrete walls and bright fluorescent lighting.

"I don't know... But I don't like it at all" Rosa murmured , gently brushing her fingers on the porous concrete floor. She stood up looking around for a way out, there was nothing. There were no doors, signs, no nothing. "Great... We're trapped." She said looking at her ally who was still getting herself off of the floor. Rayna opened her mouth to say something when they heard a voice.

"GOOD MORNING LUCKY TRIBUTES. YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ONE AND ONLY KILL OR BE KILLED CHALLENGE!!!" a robotic voice yelled over an intercom, somehow conveying as esne of happiness and exhilaration despite being non-human.

"The kill or be killed challenge?" Rayna whispered under her breath as bright blue eyes widened in fear. What was this?

"THE GAME IS QUITE SIMPLE. NO ONE LEAVES THE ROOM UNTIL ONE OF YOU HAVE DIED. NO RULES, NO EXCEPTIONS. WHAT WILL YOU DO?" the intercomm said before cutting out. Rayna and Rosayln looked at each other panicked looks on their faces. What did this mean? Did this mean-

"Rosalyn... I'm so sorry" Rayna muttered before charging at Rosayn, unsheathing her sword. Rosayln screamed dodging to the side as Rayna rammed her sword into the concrete wall, denting the tip.

"What are you doing!? We need to talk this out!" Rosayln yelled from her spot on the floor, Rayna's head whipping into Rosalyns direction.

"There is no other way Rosayln!" Rayna said taking quick step before slamming her sword towards Rosayln. The girl rolled out of the way yelling, before digging a hand into her coat pocket. She quickly stood up pulling out a short and thin dagger, her name inscribed into the hilt. Rayna slashed her sword at Rosayln, the other girls are raising itself in defense. The sword grazed through Rosa's coat shallowing cutting her skin. Rosa charged at Rayna screaming, her knife pointed in Rayna's direction. Rayna quickly side stepped avoiding the blow.

Rayna repositioning her hands, grasping the hilt with both hands. She swung the sword to the side, missing her target and hitting the wall. A shower of sparks rained onto the pair as Rosa dodged the blow. She swung her dagger at Rayna missing the girl. Rayna then nearly ended the battle, sending a power driven swing at Rosa's legs. The sword slashed across Rosa's knee and she fell to the ground, Rayna hovering above her.

"Rosa... Im so sorry." She muttered making brief eye contact with Rosayln. "You were a good ally. I'll make sure you don't die in vain" she finished. She brought her sword above her head watching the fear and despair in Rosa's eyes. And she brought the sword down onto her target she felt something bury itself into her chest. She looked down, her sword embedded in Rosa's shoulder.

"I'm sorry Rayna." Rosalyn said, an arm outstretched holding the dagger that had impaled her onec former ally. Rayna collapsed to the ground, the life draining from her eyes as her cannon went off.

Boom

Rosa layed there, a sword imbedded into her left shoulder crying. She couldn't move, she was paralyzed with fear and regret. She had killed. She had seen the life drain from the eyes of a girl he had considered an ally nearly ten minutes ago. She had murdered her, and nothing about that could be changed. This would be one of many more deaths.
