Phil stood before the Forental Gym, although he would not know it if it were not for the sign.  The building looked more like a greenhouse than a Gym.  The Aura Guardian then entered. 

The teenager was immediately at a loss for words at the massive, beautiful hedges that filled his vision.  They were a most exquisite green, with various flowers growing on, in, and around them.

"Welcome challenger," a delicate voice said.

Phil turned to see a girl, about nine years old, standing beside the door.

"Hello, would I be correct in assuming that the Gym Leader lies beyond a hedge maze?"

"Hey!  You're supposed to let me tell you that!"

Phil chuckled, "Does anyone let you say that?"

"No!  Why can't I do my job?"

"You are doing a wonderful job.  Is there anything else you need to tell me?"

"Gardeners may challenge you to battle along the way, a miniature Pokecenter lies in the maze that you may use at your discretion.  Also, trainers may hide in the hedges and jump out at you."

Phil nodded, even though he had assumed as much.  As he turned into the maze, Phil heard a quiet, "Yes!  Someone let me say something!"

The Aura Guardian continued into the maze, using his Aura to dodge unnecessary battles, and quickly winning against the necessary opponents.  Phil soon came to a door that led into the Gym Leader's arena.  A woman sat on the far end, eyes closed.  She was the image of calm with her wavy white hair and green, flower print dress.

"Are you the Gym Leader?"

"Yes and no."

"What does that mean?"

"This will be a double battle, my granddaughter will be my battling partner.  Who will be yours?"

"I don't have one."

"I could call an assistant to help."

"Thank you for the offer, but I would rather be outmatched two to one than be working with a stranger."

"Hey Phil!"  Denny said as he entered the viewing area above, "I did not wish to miss your battle."

"Good luck!"  Racheal shouted.

"Well, it seems your friends have come to watch, would you like them to help?  It is fine if they do not have a Gym Badge."

"Denny, get down here, I need a double battle partner."

"Okay,"

Once Denny reached the arena, the older woman called out, "Rose!  Get down here, we have company."

The girl from the entrance stumbled in, "Yes, Nonna, I know.  They are just faster than me."

"Now that we are here allow me to introduce myself.  I am Sakura Fiore, elder and primary Gym Leader of Forental City.  This is Rose, my granddaughter, apprentice, and secondary Gym Leader."

"I am Phil Lewis."

"I am Denusho Jotishu."

"This will be a double battle, with up to five Pokemon used by each individual.  Let the battle begin!"

Each trainer released a Pokemon.  Jes, and Sir Kane hit the field first, followed by a Lurantis from Rose and a Shiftry from Sakura.

"Fire Fang!"

"Ice Beam!"

"Leaf Blade!"

"Leaf Blade!"

Jes leapt towards the Shiftry, his mouth flaming like Blazer had taught him.  Kane opened his mouth and blasted the Lurantis with Ice Beam.  The Shiftry waited just long enough, and ducked under Jes, slicing with a large leaf.  The Luxio cried out in pain as he was thrown off course.  The Lurantis sliced at Sir Kane, who nimbly dodged the attack.

'I think we need to swap opponents,' Denny suggested.

'I agree.'

The two trainers used telepathy to order their Pokemon to swap.

Jes reacted quickly, running towards the Lurantis as it swung its arm in a Leaf Blade attack.  The Luxio took advantage, biting down on the offending arm with Fire Fang.  The pink Pokemon wailed before collapsing.  Jes suddenly started to glow brightly!  After the glow faded, it became clear that Jes had evolved into a Luxray.  Sir Kane had taken advantage of the situation to blast the Shiftry to kingdom come with Ice Beam.

Sakura and Rose returned their Pokemon before sending out their next duo, a Leafeon and an Exeggutor.

"Fire Fang!"

"Ice Beam!"

"Sunny Day!"

"Solar Beam!"

Jes started running at the Exeggutor, while Sir Kane blasted ice at the Eeveelution.  However, the Leafeon was able to send a bright yellow orb into the sky, making both Pokemon exceptionally quick.  After dodging the attacks, the Leafeon smashed a Leaf Blade into Sir Kane and the Exeggutor sent Jes flying with Solar Beam.

The Luxray crumpled, now unconscious, but the Leafeon did surprisingly little damage.  As Phil released Blazer, he saw Sakura frown, then smile like she had realized something.

"Flamethrower!"

"Ice Beam!"

"Psychic!"

"Iron Tail!"

Now it was Phil's turn to frown.  Both Pokemon resisted Iron Tail, but Sir Kane was weak to Leaf Blade.  The attack change did not make any sense, unless, Frodgadier evolved into Greninja.   The Greninja he had battled changed types!

"Sir Kane, use Water Pulse!   Trust me!"  Phil cried out.

"Phil, what are you doing?"

Sir Kane changed to Water Pulse last second.  The attack did very little damage, but Kane's type changed to Water and absorbed the Iron Tail handily.

"Sir Kane has the ability Protean.  Just before using an attack, he changes to that type," Phil explained.

"You learn quickly young one," Sakura complimented.

"Thank you.  Ice Beam, Kane!"

Sir Kane blasted the Leafeon with an Ice Beam before it knew what hit it.  The Grass type Eeveelution staggered before crumpling.  When Phil turned his attention back the Exeggutor, only to find that Blazer had already defeated it without direction.  Sakura then released a Ludicolo and Rose sent out a Whimsicott.

"Rain Dance!"

"Tail Wind!"

"Crunch!"

"Ice Beam!"

Blazer ran forward as Ludicolo sent a ball of water into the air and it began to rain and latched onto the Water and Grass type.  The Pokemon barely flinched and blasted Blazer point-blank with Scald, instantly knocking him out.  Kane managed to launch his Ice Beam before the Whimsicott could attack, quickly sending the frail Pokemon into unconsciousness.

"Blazer, return!  Mary, kick some butt."

Rose silently swapped her Whimsicott for a Roserade.

"Mary, dodge Grass attacks at all costs!  Fire Ice Beam whenever you get a shot."

"Lucky, take advantage of your Swift Swim ability to spin circles around them!"  Sakura called.

"Ice Beam!"

"Sludge Bomb!"

The Ludicolo, Lucky, started running around the field at an astonishing pace for such little legs.  However, Mary was faster, skating across the wet surface to get behind Lucky, avoiding a Giga Drain and blasting him with Ice Beam.  Mary continued like this, and Phil spared a glance towards the other two Pokemon to see both being returned.  Zoey and a Venusaur replaced their fallen comrades.  Denny calling for Wing Attack and Rose for Sludge Bomb.

The Aura Guardian turned to his own battle just in time to see Mary land the finishing blow.  Sakura then released a Chesnaught, and the sky cleared.

"Seed Bomb!"

"Sunny Day!"

"Ice Beam!"

"Wing Attack!"

The Chesnaught launched several large seeds that exploded when they hit something.  One landed right in front of Mary, and knocked her out with the subsequent blast.  Other came to close for comfort to Zoey, who was having some difficulty hitting the Venusaur now.  The formerly moderately paced Pokemon was now zipping around with the solar power from the Sunny Day orb.

"George, go and Mega Evolve!"

George appeared in a flash of light.  The Gallade had no sooner landed on the field than he was enveloped in a spherical bright blue shell.  The shell glowed for a brief moment, before breaking apart to reveal a Mega Gallade.  After George appeared in his new form, Phil winced.  The pain was not as bad as before, yet, it still hurt like the Distortion World.

"Psycho Cut!"

"Keep him at bay with Seed Bomb!"

George ran forward, dodging most of his foe's attacks, and deflecting what he could not.  After reaching the Chesnaught, the Gallade sliced multiple times to knock out the behemoth Pokemon.  The orb from Sunny Day faded as the white and green Pokemon hit the dirt.

"George, take care of that Venusaur!"

George had already darted over to the Grass and Poison type to battle before Sakura could even release her next Pokemon, which was an Exeggutor from the Alola region.

"Denny, get Zoey to stall that Exeggutor."

"Roger that!  Zoey, Confuse Ray followed by repeated Wing Attacks!"

The extremely fast Golbat dodged the tree-like Pokemon's attacks to send a ghostly ball of energy at it.  The Exeggutor shook its heads in confusion, then swung to attack again, only to fall.  Unfortunately, his unpredictable fall caused Zoey to be crushed and knocked out.

Denny wordlessly released Matt, who immediately went to work on the Exeggutor, using his acrobatic abilities to avoid the confused Pokemon's random thrashing.  While Denny had been dealing with the Exeggutor, Phil and George had knocked out the Venusaur, and the Mega Evolved Pokemon was now trying to deal with an annoying Jumpluff that was diving in and out of range.

Eventually, the Jumpluff managed to finish off George, however, Matt also managed to finish off the Exeggutor.

"Evie, go!  Use Swift to cover Matt's back!"

"Matt do the same with Force Palm!"

"Rock Climb!"

"Stay clear!"

A massive pillar of stone rose from the ground, taking Matt and Evie with it.  Once it stopped growing, Leif began to swiftly climb up.  The two trapped Pokemon looked for a way to escape, but could find none.  Then, the Torterra reached the top and rammed into them, knocking both Pokemon off.

Phil and Denny ran forward to try and catch their Pokemon.  Both Matt and Evie smiled when they saw this, and a bright glow filled the room.

When the light faded, two new Pokemon were in the room.  Matt had evolved into a Lucario, and Evie had become a blue Pokemon with bird-like wings and a mane of white feathers.  Tiny wings fluttered on her ankles, helping with her maneuvering.  Phil scanned her with the Pokedex.

'Error, data not found.  New species.  Type, Flying.  Approximate weight, 35 pounds.  Approximate body length, three feet.  Approximate wingspan, twelve feet.  Known moves, Aerial Ace, Steel Wing, Quick Attack, Bite.'

"Evie!  Use Aerial Ace to put the pressure on that Jumpluff!"

"Matt, use Aura Sphere and Force Palm to deal with that Torterra!"

"Earthquake!"

"Aerial Ace!"

Evie flew forward with incredible speed.  The two airborne Pokemon dipped and dived, dodged and weaved, flying around and around, each trying to land a blow on the other.  Meanwhile, Matt was attacking the Torterra, blasting it repeatedly with Aura Sphere.  However, Leif was one tough Pokemon, and simply took the hits, until he finally managed to connect with an Earthquake.  Matt fainted instantly.

At the same time, Evie finally outmaneuvered her opponent and landed a knock out blow.

"Stone Edge!"

"Aerial Ace!"

Evie smirked as several pointed stones came out of the ground and flew at her.  The Flying type Eeveelution went into a sharp dive towards her opponent,  easily weaving through the minefield of stone to strike the Torterra with a finishing blow.

"You did it Evie!"

'I did, didn't I?'

"Of course, I'll bet you're tired too."

'You read my mind.'

"Maybe I did."

Evie giggled at Phil's joke while he returned her.

"Congratulations, each of you have earned the Blossom Badge."

Sakura handed Phil a Gym Badge, it closely resembled a Cherry Blossom, and was trimmed with silver.  The Aura Guardian flared his coat open and pinned it on the inside pocket, right next to the Impact Badge.

Phil then left the Gym, and returned to the Pokemon Center.  After healing his Pokemon he called Professor Pine.

"Hello Phil, what can I do for you?"

"Professor, the Eevee your friend gave me evolved!"

"Why is that important?"

"I'll show you.  Evie!"

Evie swooped down and hovered right behind Phil, peaking around over his shoulder.

"My lands!  A new Pokemon!  Have you scanned her?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Send me the data.  I will then make a full analysis of the data and send a complete Pokedex entry back to you."

"Of course, Professor, may I name the species?"

"What did you have in mind?"

"Aveon, A-V-E-O-N."

"Sounds like as good a name as any.  Aveon it is.  How did she evolve?"

"A Torterra used Rock Climb and knocked her and a Riolu that belongs to a friend down from the top.  Me and my friend ran to catch them, but both Pokemon evolved.  The Lucario landed without incident, and Evie never even hit the ground."

"All good information.  Go have some fun now, you've earned it."

"Yes, Sir!"

So, Phil gathered all his friends, Pokemon an human, and left the Pokemon center to try and find another Karaoke joint.
