Chapter 4 - Nowhere to Be Found
"May 23rd
Well, its official. I'm in the Rebellion and will attempt the break out in three nights – the 26th – with Rosa (the apparent leader.) I'm so excited! Freedom! And with Dan, too. Who knows, I might not need you anymore!"
I closed the book on top of my dresser. I was beginning to like the quick entries.
I saw Dan in the morning straight class. He wore a sweet grin and waved at me. I wanted to kiss him again so badly.
"Good morning, gentlemen. How are we today?"
"Fine," we answered.
"Great, now lets get started right away...."
Class passed surprisingly quick. I much preferred to be in a regular school over this. During our free hours, or "time to practice being normal," I immediately left to find Dan, who was waiting for me outside my own room.
"Hi," I said, guiding him to come in. My area was less guarded than his, so we were safer there.
"Hey." Dan quickly held the sides of my face and kissed me heavily the second the door was shut.
I knew we had the risk of being caught, but it felt so good. I let it slide and kissed back.
"Oh God," Dan sighed. "I've wanted to do that for so long. I haven't kissed anyone in months."
"Months?" I asked. "Why months? There are so many other guys here that, well, swing the same way, you know. You could have kissed anyone! And in the," I dropped my voice to a whisper, "Rebellion, you could've gotten anyone you wanted."
"I know that," he told me, pulling me close by my shoulders, "but I don't like any of them. See, I'm happy with my sexuality, but that doesn't make me a guy who only wants to kiss other guys. I only kiss them if I like them. Which is good, because I really, really like you. I... I think I might... love you, Phil."
I didn't want to ruin the moment. "I love you, Dan," I expressed, then kissed him again. I immediately stopped when someone knocked at the door.
"Hello?" someone said from the other side. "Who's in there? We can hear you!"
"Just me," I said quickly. "Phil. And Dan's here too."
"Why? Open the door!"
I did as I was told. Two guys – recognizable trainers – came in and inspected us and parts of the room, snooping around my things. "Dan Howell? What are you doing in Phil's room?"
"I–I was just..."
"We were just talking," I said, saving him.
"About what?"
"That one girl from the other camp, Tiffany. Oh my God, that's a gorgeous bitch. I'd love to get up that, you know?"
I couldn't tell if they bought my story or not, but they looked skeptical either way.
"Oh! Were you thinking... No!" I played. No, Dan and I are just friends."
"Yeah, seriously," he added. "Jeez, isn't this what you want? It is a straight camp. Why do you have to bother us?"
"I see," one said. "Carry on then. You guys are making progress. We appreciate that."
"No problem," Dan added as they left.
"You boys have a nice day. See you in evening classes later."
"Yes sir."
Once the door shut again, Dan leaped for me. "That," he said, placing small kisses on my neck, "was amazing. How did you know to do that?"
"It just came to me," I responded. "Hey, not too hard. They'll notice," I giggled.
"Sorry," he panted.
"When we get out," I whispered, "you can give me whatever you want, ok?"
He grinned and nodded.
I kissed his cheek."You know, it's sad that that's how some people are, talking about girls like that... or guys too."
"Like how?"
"'I'd love to get up that?' 'Gorgeous bitch?' That's actually how people refer to others. It's so wrong. If you like someone, you should call them beautiful, not a bitch."
"I know. It sucks that that's how they want us too. See why I need to get out? Why we need to get out? Everyone here is a victim, not a criminal."
"Yeah."
We talked a bit longer until our bell rang, and we had to separate. Dan pecked my cheek goodbye and left for the safety of his room.
I felt like writing down our little chat in my book, so I searched the dresser top for it. It wasn't there. I looked in the drawer, on the floor, behind the dresser, in my bed, everywhere. It was gone.
"No no no," I mumbled. Where could it have gone? Then I had a dreaded thought:
The trainers.
They came in, noticed it, and must've take it. That book had everything! The Rebellion, Dan, Rosa... why did I write all that down? This is bad, I thought. They were all going to get caught, and so was I.
And it'll be my fault....
