In the last instant, you close your eyes...and you pull the trigger.

The gunshot shatters the night...but the its echoes are lost in the sound of a continuing struggle.

You open your eyes and realize you've missed completely. You grit your teeth and try again to take aim.

Shk!

Ivy is suddenly very still. You watch in horror as she slides slightly down toward Wes, and the bloodied point of a knife protrudes from her back. A dark flower blossoms over the back of her white top.

With a grunt, Wes heaves Ivy's body off of him. She lies on the ground, the handle of a hunting knife sticking up from her chest. She does not move again.

Wes pulls himself to his feet, looking peeved. His pant leg is rucked up, and beneath it you can see a sheath strapped to his calf before he shakes his leg, allowing the cuff to fall down over his boot. He bends down and plucks the hunting knife out of Ivy's chest...and he turns his attention to you with a frown.

You remember the gun in your hand. You raise it and aim, but even as you pull the trigger, Wes jumps to the side. The gunshot rings through the night, and the bullet goes harmlessly wide of his body. He lashes out with his foot, kicking the gun out of your hand.

It falls several feet away. You haul yourself to your hands and your good knee and scramble after it.

The knife takes you between the shoulder blades...and in the ribs...and when you roll over, trying to fend him off with your arms, it takes you in the heart.
